  2. "There's A Place" is my favorite Beatles song ever. Love it both muscially and lyrically. And it didn't even make the (unnecessary) cut from 'Introducing The Beatles' to 'The Early Beatles'.
  3. Isn't it quite natural that tastes differ? And exaggeration sometimes helps to convey a message too ... Though it was spurred in part by one of the Beatles' (Ringo??) much later admission that they indeed had gone wildly overboard with all their Guru and psych stuff in the second part of the 60s. Of course. I actually thought my previous post agreed with you!
  4. I also prefer their earlier stuff. I saw them on Ed Sullivan, my first album purchase at 10 years old was 'Beatles 65' (my first 45 purchase was "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' " by the Righteous Brothers, so I got THAT right!). I love and own plenty of "that screwy, weird Sitar, Oriental, pot smoking, high flying, zonked out stuff", it's my go-to music, but then and now I prefer it by other groups, such as the Jefferson Airplane, early Santana, original Love, etc. I had and have the later Beatles stuff, but rarely listen to it.
  5. Yep, and they'll get it, too.
  6. PM sent on Sam Cooke: The RCA Albums Collection (8 CDs) $28 Frank Sinatra: Capital Recordings Concept Albums (14 CDs) $25
  7. pls thx
  8. Steve Grossman is among my least favorite 1970-75 Miles saxophonists, but I second this - he sounded a lot better on the April and June stuff that was not officially released. Where I did like the Liebman/Grossman combo was with Elvin Jones.
  9. Absolutely. I love Mel Torme, his Bethlehem stuff in particular. And, ftr, just as you said you're tough on piano trios, I really don't like male jazz singers. Same here. Torme on Bethlehem is about as good as that genre gets.
  10. I don't think so - the music isn't as "In your face" as BB, so would not have translated out of bounds like BB did. But I'm another one who prefers it to BB. That being said, it would have gone further than it did just because in the days of limited spending money, the Columbia 2LP sets for the price of one +$1 were always prime purchase considerations.
  11. All CD's paid for or involved in finalized trades were mailed today, thx.
  12. I actually like that Alice Darr album a lot. Very similar to the first Julie London album, with just guitar and bass, very moody, and I like her singing. And the Joe Carroll is nice to have.
  13. It's Membran, isn't it? If it is ... meh. At $1.67 a disc, it's a steal. There's a lot of interesting obscurities and semi-obscurities on that set, it's well worth the money even excluding the Bird and Prez. And I found the sound on the non-Bird/Prez stuff to be pretty good, all things considered.

  15. Start with 'The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady' on Impulse. Then the 3CD Columbia box, then the 7CD Atlantic box, then 'The Great Concert of Charles Mingus'. But there's still so much more, those don't do justice to the scope of his work.
  16. And the sideman stuff is really interesting, so not having it would be a loss.
  17. Agreed, don't see nearly enough to justify box set price expenditure if you already own the canonical stuff (Butterfield, Kooper, Electric Flag, Fillmore).
  18. that's a pity - the earlier release contained 36 bonus tracks (non LP 7", BBC material etc) pertinent to each original LP Yep, the earlier release basically gets it perfect, and at a great price. All the post-Soft Machine Ayers I need.
  19. Damn, Jim. Next you'll be telling us you don't like Kenny G! gregmo But he'll quaiify it as being a "as a separate & unrelated activity" kind of like.

  21. Page, looks like you are acquitting yourself quite admirably on these BFT's!
  22. 1 – I believe I have this, but am not placing it. Pianist has been influenced harmonically by Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett, but it’s not either of them. 2 – background music to me, but OK for that. 3 – Love this, right down to the poor recording quality. Especially like the tenor. Hope I have this somewhere, and if I do, look forward to pulling out the entire album. Really up my alley, this is by far my favorite on the BFT. I’m thinking Savoy label for whatever reason, maybe the recording ambience. 50’s Yusef Lateef maybe? 4 – I have some of of this sort of thing (I call it the Paul Bley syndrome), and have no problem listening to it, but seldom would pull it off the shelf unless I had to listen to something while working at 3:00 AM (which happens at times). 5 – Nice groove, but do not like that tenor solo. I know this, am not placing it. Probably have it. Have a lot of this sort of thing. 6 – Fun fun fun. Again sort of falls into background music for me, but really really good background music. Hope I have this one. 7 – “Round Midnight” on bassoon ? I believe that would be Ken McIntyre from the Hindsight album. While I appreciate McIntyre in theory (especially the company he kept in the early 60’s – Dolphy), I find I don’t really respond to his playing. 8 – Older players than the previous selections, I believe. Fine for what it is , quite enjoyable. 9 – This is Bobby Watson, one of the tunes he did with Art Blakey (though this is not the Blakey version). “Wheel Within a Wheel”. I loved Watson’s writing and playing during the Blakey period, the group with him and Wynton Marsalis was one of the greatest Jazz Messenger units. 10 – Lovely. Hope I have it somewhere. 11 – I can see where it has value, but not for me. I’m too old and not a nihilist 12 – Outside my domain. 13 – Huh? 14 – It’s good, of course, though I get the feeling these guys could have phoned this in. Update after reading previous comments:I do own that Walter Davis album.
