  1. I'll never forget his name now! Wasn't it McLean who thought Connors botched the session anyway? Even though Jackie rejected the session himself, that lineup with Woody and Moncur has got to be salvagaeble somehow...right? Not necessarily. 'Bout Soul is a mess (to my ears anyways), and has the same front line. That would be Rashied Ali on drums with LaMont Johnson on piano and Scotty Holt on bass. And Johnson and Holt sound fine with Billy Higgins on McLean's late '66 Left Bank recordings. So do the math...
  2. I'll recommend the Jack Bruce BBC box set. Three loaded CD's of really good 70's material for under $20. I loved James Dewar's singing with Trower so much that no one else (even Bruce) sounds right with him to my ears. Speaking of Dewar, his earlier group, Stone The Crows, with Maggie Bell and the tragic Les Harvey, was one of the most underrated groups from back in the day.
  3. Yes and Yes. I have a 1991 Strata-East/Bellaphon CD of it. It's magnificent, as is all of the Tolliver from that period.
  4. Count me as a big fan, especially of the Elektra material (the Capitol stuff could meander a good bit, Neil seemed sort of in a haze in that period, but the incredible talent remained). "Other Side of This Life", "The Bag I'm In", "Everybody's Talking" and "The Dolphins" were all excellent compositions that received memorable covers. Stylistically, Neil had some similarities to Tim Hardin. His vocals were "bluesy" as opposed to "the blues", which is something different. The Jefferson Airplane, in addition to doing "Other Side of This Life" regularly in their early set lists, name-checked Neil in two of their best originals, "The Ballad of You & Me & Pooneil" and the magnificent "House at Pooneil Corner", which to me was their ultimate psychedelic trip (not that the entire Baxter's album or some of the other stuff on Crown of Creation was far behind). If you're into Tim Hardin and/or Tim Buckley, Neil is well worth checking out. For the younger crowd, if you're into Jeff Buckley, all three of them are well worth checking out, except for the 70's material by Hardin and Tim Buckley, which are many shades of messes.
  5. Thanks for the imput but I've had bad luck ordering discs from sellers on amazon many times getting RVG Editions and/or promo/record club copies not to mention discs in worse condition than advertised. Bob I have it available. PM sent. Great CD, in whatever version you get it. Wonderful Freddie Hubbard. "Oliloqui Valley" is one of my two all-time favorites by Hancock (along with "King Cobra").
  6. PM sent on Garner - Savoy/Dial, Hart, Maupin and Redman discs.
  7. PM sent on the Binney, Ayler, Logan, Adderley's, and Zitro
  8. Take the bellbottoms off and buy it. Fine Getz. Fine Rene Thomas and Eddie Louiss there too. Very intense. I love it, one of my absolute favorite Getz sets. I find Louiss amazing on it.
  9. It's pleasant enough but very slight, doesn't hold a candle to the Blue Notes or Riversides. Really for Blakey completists (like me) only.

  11. I have a CD of Karrin Allyson - Daydream, autographed by the artist, that I got awhile ago as part of a lot on Ebay. As I have no idea how to determine a "fair" price on something like that, I'd like to just find a good home for it and trade it for something interesting to someone who would like to have it. I'm not an autograph guy. If this CD is of interest to you, send me a list of CD's you'd be willing to trade one of for it.
  12. Well, we all have snotty things we said about people 30 years ago that we wish we could take back (I know I do, and have specifics that still haunt me), but thankfully for most of us, no one remembers or is paying any attention to those things 30 years later. The curse of credibility. Adams actually is my all-time favorite on baritone. Thank you, Larry, for being willing to share that with us.
  13. "Mystery of Love" from that one was the piece that first got me into Weston. I was already a Harper fan from his work on the 'Lee Morgan' album, especially "Capra Black", and from his Strata-East 'Capra Black' album. I like the early Weston stuff, but have always been more drawn to Weston's material from the mid-60's on, which was much more Afro-centric. I think the story is that he took a trip to Africa, which changed his conception, if I remember correctly.
  14. Do you know offhand the ratio of instrumental grooviness to vocal beat group stuff on this collection? 80% vocal, but great period stuff. The Chapter 3 stuff has been on CD, I have it.
  15. Looking forward to your opinion. The band seems to be the same one which was recorded on the four Woody Shaw Live cds, sans Hutcherson that were put out by High Note. Similar material, I suppose? There was discussion about this in another thread recently. Really good sets.
  16. The Freddie Roach is great, and also very hard to come by.
  17. Sorry if this has been mentioned elsewhere on the site. Received notification that BMG Music Service is going out of business on May 31. They will continue to run Yourmusic, but not the parent club. Too bad, because you could do a lot better through the club on multiple CD sets than through Yourmusic. I've belonged to them for about 20 years, and had belonged to Columbia Record/CD club for over 30 years, so it's going to feel strange to have neither around any more. Built a lot of my collection through those two clubs, especially Columbia, where you you could average under $5 per CD, tax and shipping included.
  18. Women from the City of Brotherly Love division: Trudy Pitts Shirley Scott British Prog/Jazz/Rock division: Brian Auger (Trinity, Oblivion Express) Mike Ratledge (Soft Machine) David Sinclair (Caravan) Pete Bardens (Camel) Rod Argent (Zombies, Argent)
  19. Thought I would bump this up for renewed discussion since some people may have now heard this material for the first time through the John Handy Mosaic Select release. I was surprised the first time through how few people were familiar with this material. I assume Chuck still doesn't care for it , but would be interested in any new thoughts.
  20. I know that for the '67 Monterey Pop Festival, only the first song or two was filmed for most of the acts, which is a tragic loss. (At least that's what the documentary says). Suspect Woodstock was the same. Seems like more would have come out on DVD for those if there was more, though maybe I'm just showing my age/era here....
  21. 5-4-3-2-1 was the theme song of Britain's Shindig-type TV show called Ready, Steady, Go. I believe that it was a minor hit there, released before Do Wah Diddy. And felser, you mean Come Tomorrow, right? Yes I do - I'll correct my post. That one wasn't a hit here, so isn't plastered in my subconscious active file like "Doo Wah Diddy Diddy" is.
  22. And I certainly understand why it wasn't a hit. Pretty dumb record. Not a "Doo Wah Diddy Diddy" or "Pretty Flamingo" or "Come Tomorrow" by any stretch of the imagination. Closer to Freddie and the Dreamers type inanities. Manfred Mann, in addition to those great singles, had some killer album tracks like "Smokestack Lightning". But like any early British Invasion groups (except for THAT ONE early British Invasion Group), also had some real dogs. Andy 5-4-3-2-1 is of the canine variety. Question for Chuck. If 5-4-3-2-1 had somehow become a million seller, would Prestige have had the manufacturing and distribution bandwidth to handle it? Seems like a whold different world than jazz LP's which would have been selling, what, 5,000 copies each? What was normal sales in that era for jazz LP's by second tier names (IE not the big sellers like Miles, Brubeck, etc.)? edited to correct song title per GA Russell.
