  1. I'm not a deadhead by any stretch, like the band, barely tolerate the fans,,,but I have been tempted by this 2CD thing from 69 I've seen that has, I think, some of the source materials for Live?Dead which is by far my favorite album of theirs. Any one know what I'm talking 'bout and care to comment?
  2. Sad to say, Ms. Parks passing ellicited some v. ugly postings on Portland's Cragslist Rants & Raves section, but it's not like the general level of discussion is exactly high-minded there... but it was also the first place I saw the mug shot photo and several others with her in or next to buses.
  3. I never found Dolphy hard to get at all, but then that's just me...Maybe you're looking too hard? The greatness of this album just jumped out at right off...as for the juxtaposition of "Hoe Down" & "Stolen Moments", sure it's a but of a contrast but I don't see/hear how any one who listens to rap or metal could fins it jarring...but again that's just me. Something that perhaps we can all agree on is how well recorded this is...listening to it the other night (vinyl, 70's pressing) I was struck by just how good analog can be...didn't sound like a recording at all, sounded like saxophones right there in the room with me!
  4. I don't really follow the game any more, but I am glad to see that the're playing again. But what's up, or not up, wth Pittsburg? I came home from work the other day to my three yr old girl watching them lose their fifth OT game of the season...
  5. I too love this album, have for decades considered it one of the few jazz albums to have the wholeness that Kind of Blue has...and, yes, I even like "Hoe Down". Now I'm going to have to print Sangry's and everyone else's comments and go listen to it again (and again)...not that that's a bad thing, not hardly. I've staumbled through the fake book versions of "Stolen Moments' and like plaing it, but I'm quite sure I'm not getting everyhting that's there. Oliver was a talented guy but it seems like maybe he spread himself a litle too thin, for me this is head and shoulders the best of what I've heard by him, which is by no means everything...
  6. Thanks for the update, stay strong, keep pushing to find out what it is...don't know what else to say, all my best to both of you. Dana
  7. Surely the Costello choice for what it means to be British would be "Oliver (Cromwell)'s Army"?
  8. How good is Fargo? How deep is the ocean...?
  9. Clifford Brown - Beginning and the End, even if it really wasn't, quite...
  10. for those of you in the Portland, OR area there will be a record show at the Elks club at SE 50th & Hawthorne this Sat night, 5-9pm. I'll have two tables: 1 of my mixed stuff and 1 of my late brother-in-law's mostly rock LPs & CDs. Also selling a C-melody sax, tenor mouthpiece and assorted other stuff. Thanx.
  11. Didn't Bob D make this case much more succinctly and strongly?
  12. Last Date and Live at the Lighthouse make clear how much of a crying shame it is that Lee died when and how he did...but on the other hand if it's really true that BN was planning to pair him with the Mizell bros., well i won't say it's just as well but I really dislike their stuff and not because I don't like funk/groove (as those of you who got my blindfold test well know) but precisely because I do dig natural funk/groove..to me there's nothing more grotesque than fake funk. End of rant. Back on topic, Last Sessions? Hell yeah!
  13. Went, had a nice time listening to the Reptet and talking to fellow board members. They gots cute young ladies in the band and the ladies and the guys all play good too! Thanks Johnny. I'll post more when I get a chance to listen to the CD, if you get a chance to see 'em by all means go...
  14. Certainly not Ayler's best, but I'll probably pick it up to satisfy my completist urges...I do kinda like the version of ghosts since itshows just how differently this great tune could be done.
  15. sure, 43 v. 71 is part of it but not all... it's also the material, the relative solo space alotted, and a mostly 'on' performance v. a really 'on' one... Hopefully, this one will do well enough that we'll get more from collecter dude's stash so we each can have the live Rollins gig of our dreams... "Last of the Mohicans" - funny and true, in so many ways.
  16. Gatemouth Brown died a couiple of days ago, saw in the paper and confirmed with Google. He survived Katrina but was forced to evacuate his home outside New Orleans. I didn't own a lot of his records or ever see him live but I always enjoyed his eclectic/catholic/? approach to a broad range of American Vernacular Music, for lack of a better term.
  17. Used my Borders 30% off coupon to get this and while I'm glad I did it's not all that...pretty typical late Rollins, enjoayable and more in places but not nearly as strong as, say, Live In Japan from the mid-70s (an import only, still I think) which has more energy, more better Rollins more of the time and better sound. I haven;'t heard the Ronny Scotts albums yet, I sold my Live in Denmark, hearing Sonny play anything for 40+ minutes was too much of a good thing for me...
  18. Will try to make the 9/24 show...
  19. It's da bomb!
  20. This thread prompted me to relisten to Spirits/Witches & Devils; great record, great playing from all concerned including Norman Howard. Would be v. interested in hearing more from him. Would also like to see S/W&D reissued with the spirituals and other material recorded the same day (w/out Howard) for a fuller picture of one of Ayler's best days in the studio.
  21. Filled both vehicles (Studebaker & Mazda) for $2.63/gal recently, but saw a lot of $2.89 & 2.99 per gal of reg on the way to the beautiful Oregon coast yesterday. The trip cost about $20 in gas but was well worth it. Guess I should be glad I don't have that R#-engined Avanti I want, loosey milage and premium, but I'd make it all back racing suckers who don't know how fast a Stude can be...
  22. sidewinder: Thanx, that's about what I figured. I have this on CD too so I guess I'll have to sell one or the other at the next Night Owl record sale here in puddletown, Oct 8th.
  23. I just got an LP copy of Miles Dark Magus, dutch pressing v. nice shape (haven't played yet). Don't think this was ever on vinyl domestically, how rare?
  24. Recently acquired LP of Jack McDuff, On Wth It! V. greasy with Joe Dukes, Harold Vick & Eddie Deihl. Not on CD? Recorde in '61 not issued til a decade later.
  25. Lowriders with the back corner up always look like a dog pissing on a hydrant to me, esp'ly if the're next to a hydrant...
