Traditional Christmas dinner?
danasgoodstuff replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Turkey for thanksgiving, ham for Xmas day. Scalloped potatoes with the ham, mashed and dressing with the turkey, green beans and bacon with both, sometimes yams/sweet potatoes with both, lots of assorted pies with both. -

Forgot to mention I haven't heard Trane @ Temple U, so I don't have an opinion yet.

If you look at point totals, etc. it's v. good but not astounding, but think of this - to get his services, the Habs owners just bought the whole damn league he was in, and off ice he was if anything even more impressive - he was in Saskatoon to help Gordie Howe with some charity thing and after meeting Jean Gordies' sister told him "Oh, we used to be Detroit fans". "To you from trembling hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high" that's what it says in the Habs old dressing room in the Forum, they take hockey seriously in Montreal.

yes, jean B was about as gracefull as any hockey player I've ever seen, and effective too - once scored three times in 45 seconds on a power play. and then they changed the rules so you couldn't do that anymore!

I "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" to be sure, but these are my picks for 2014: Best new new - Regina Carter, Southern Comfort (quite possibly the best C&W record of 2014 as well) Best new/old - Jimmy Giuffre, NY 1965 Best expanded reissue - Miles @ Filmore Best straight reissue - The Giant is Awakened Most welcome, best isn't even an issue - Magic Sam, Live @ Avant-Guard and Sonny R, Rd Shows vol.3 and, hopefully, a bunch of stuff I haven't heard yet.

So, after one of those finals, the Habs are returning to Montreal and the nice man at Canadian Customs asks Beliveau "Anything to Declare?" and he responds "Just the Stanley Cup". So the clever fellow replies, "We'll just mark that Canadian Goods Returned."

Christmas songs that irritate you
danasgoodstuff replied to Milestones's topic in Miscellaneous Music
People who loath Christmas music irritate me, the music itself not so much. Although I'd have to admit "gramma got Run Over" is far from a favorite. and I quite like Lennon's Merry Xmas (War is Over)", both to listen to and to play myself. -
Has anyone else been following the coverage of his demise and offical (Quebec) state funeral and all the reminising about his life? I started watching Hockey in '66 so I certainly remember the Habs of that era. I'd forgotten they'd changed the power play rules after he scored 3 goals in less than a minute. I was particularly struck by Geof Molson saying that his parent, English speaking team (and beer) owners held M. Beliveau up as an exemplar of what he should aspoire to growing up to be. What say you?

It (ALS) helped me get thru some v. hard times, so I love it.

Do you listen to jazz on the radio?
danasgoodstuff replied to Utevsky's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
KMHD here in Portland, OR sporadically - I know some DJs and it can be good, but it can be very uneven too. -
Seriously, I like the Sing Your Own Messiah, although I'm not sure the people next to me enjoyed my limited sightsinging skills so much.

I thought there was only one Messiah?

Non Jazz Albums (Or Songs, etc.) That Rocked Your World

Clovers - One Mint Julep (written by that great imbiber, Rudy Tombs), and then everything else they did, at least for Atlantic Joe Turner - Boss of the Blues Joe Tex - CC Rider Yardbirds - "Shapes of Things" & Five Live Muddy Waters - a/k/a Mckinley Morganfield, I have this material in different packages now, but this is what first knocked me out Howlin' Wolf - London Sessions, I won this by getting to the quarter finals in a College of Music Knowledge contest in high school Chuck Berry - Golden Decade, yes I was very Chess-centric for awhile Little Richard - 17 Grooviest Marty Robbins - Gunfighter Ballads, this and some cowboy 78s I had as a child were my 1st C&W loves Louvin Brothers - Sorrowful Songs of Life Son House - Death Letter Blind Lemon Johnson - Jack of Diamonds Stravinsky - Rite of Spring Otis Redding - White Chritmas, confirming my preference for interp over composing these are among the things that knocked me out early on -

Did Joni talk about Saskatchewan? -
I guess this guy Garth was one of Ronnie Hawkins' band, the Hawks, later The Band. Is that correct? MG Yup, Garth Hudson, member of the Hawks, the Band, still going. Paid to give the other Hawks lessons.

Jackie McLean's Post-1975 Recordings (All Labels)
danasgoodstuff replied to Mark Stryker's topic in Recommendations
I'd grab whichever two were worth the most so I could replace the rest of 'em just as soon and cheaply as possible. Having all the Jackie Mac, or at least all the Bluenotes, is a necessary thing - unless I was jumping out of the fire and into the frying pan! -
Rolling Stones Saxophonist Bobby Keys Dies at 70
danasgoodstuff replied to sonnymax's topic in Artists
I loves me some Bobby Keys. I actually have, and have struggled thru, a transcription of his solo on "Brown Sugar", something I almost never do. He may have been a King Curtis acolyte, but he had fully internalized that style and spoke it fluently. -
The roughies (such an absurd nickname, but what has the official name got to do with Sk?) will be back next year, or not...depending on how well our QB heals.
