Corea's Song of Singing is quite good, as is the same band (Atchul & Holland) with Braxton added, but I don't know if the latter group's BN work has made it to CD

Well, I should hope so. -
What is going through your head right now?

I always thought you could do a great '50s R&B instrumental shuffle version of that. -

You mean, she might not give it back? -
Gene Clark was the single greatest component of the Byrds. Not exactly equivalent statements, not sure if you meant them to be. In any case I think Gene Clark is every bit as overrated by his supports as Gran Parsons is by his. Both are better than Pigpen, unless you take that as comedy - but even then...

Whoa, indeed.

I probably listen to Capt Marvel more than any other Getz, and agree with Jsngry about the benefits of tracking down the later CD version (it's the one with an outtake and two alternates as bonuses). BUT I'd like to put in a word for the overlooked Getz/Bonfa album, it's more Brazilian than Jazz Samba and I prefer Maria's singing to Astrud's. And they don't do either of Bonfa's best known tunes Also not mentioned is his work with Chet Baker - not a big fav but he does do that simultaneous improv/spontaneous counterpoint thing well, having tried and failed miserable - two good bars then instant trainwreck - I'm always impressed by that. Faorgot - I don't have a lot of late Getz but I love that video of him standing in the audience playing Boold Count a a trib to someone else, or have I conflated two different clips?

I liked the jazz robots version better.

This is a trip, in so many ways. So are the early Datsun owner's manual not quite translated into English of the Live At Montreaux with Tony, Check & Stan Calrk that I watched after that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7oo8EopEJ0

Freddie Hubbard solo on Lost Dreams (liquid love 1975)
danasgoodstuff replied to l p's topic in Recommendations
Time will tell ... [ ] Agreed. I have a feeling it will feel less revolutionary, but no less musical — somewhat like how Ornette's 50's work is viewed (heard) now. Beautiful work, and the public's ears finally caught up. Yeah, it probably will be more apparent as time goes by that 'Miles was still Miles' and that there are other elements of contiuality as well... -
Which movie/musical delivered the most jazz standards?
danasgoodstuff replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
My fav musical is Finian's Rainbow, but it has only 4 or 5 standards, and that's probably a stretch. But if I was going to do an album of a musical that would be the one, maybe I'd pad it out with other music, say political folksongs... -
Album covers with a drawing or painting of the artist.
danasgoodstuff replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Not sure why they used the photo AND drawing here, they don't really make sense as the beginning and end, but the end part (even if it wasn't really, perhaps more because it wasn't) is some of my favorite trumpet playing, unauthorized recording and just plain music of all time! -
What vinyl are you spinning right now??
danasgoodstuff replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I like the Art Blakey that Gilmore is on, but it is (as you would expect) very much Blakey's thing, not Gilmore's (or, should that be, Ra's?). and ditto for the McCoy he's on and the Freddie Hubbard. -
the Swingles always struck me as just inextricably odd, but so did many of those European films of the period...I hear much of the music of the period as irrepressably optimistic, I'm old enuff to have experienced it in real time as an unfolding of ever expanding possibility...but not them.

Freddie Hubbard solo on Lost Dreams (liquid love 1975)

Same. 70s Miles has been my favorite Miles for a while now, and I'm still trying to get my mind around it. It seems/feels like there's still a lot of catching up (listening-wise) to do. I wonder, fifty years from now, how this period of his music will be viewed. Time will tell, but to me I guess that all depends on what happens between now and then and I wouldn't even hazard a guess there. -
As a proudly unionized public employee, I get New Years Day, MLK Day, Presidents DAy, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Xmas Eve and Day off. Because we traded Veterans Day (Nov 11th, aka Poppy day in the UK & Canada) for Xmas Eve and the rest of the County offices are closed and the paper often misstates that ALL County facilities are closed, it's usually pretty slow. As is Easter, although I'm surprised that people think we get it off. We've never had Columbus Day off, not this job or any I can think off, even though here in Oregon it could commemorate the great Columbus Day Storm, and those of us who have lived here long enough to remember, or at least have heard about it. On the other hand, we are open 7 days a week, and most of us work one weekend day and one late night (8pm) per week. I currently work a Sun-Th week with Tues my late day. All public info, as is my wage and benefits. Should get my 'ketchup' check soon since we finally settled the COLA that took effect in July.

I loved the album as originally released and was then a little disappointed that other George Braith I heard later was nowhere near as greasy, although it's interesting in other ways.

What they accused Miles of in this period - selling out/coasting/playing down to the audience, etc. - I don't hear it at all in his work, BUT I do hear it, more or less, in all those other guys...YMMV/whatever. -
Maybe some Tristanoite took 'Trane to see Lennie? An encounter like that wouldn't necessarily be documented...
-
In reference to whether the bonus material on Blue John might change anyone's mind regarding the viability of that session(s) - probably not but it just might 'cause the bonus material is noticably more straight ahead/less greasy than the originally issued. disappointingly so to me, YMMV, etc.

I too always assumed that Swingle was some sort of horrid play on words...and maybe it still was?

Can Musicians Play Quietly Anymore?
danasgoodstuff replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Musician's Forum
pianoforte = soft/loud, i.e. an instrument that can play soft and loud (and in between) I agree with the basisc premise of this thread, that changing performance circumstances, specifically the ubiquitousnes(?) of PA systems even when they aren't needed. has wrought a change in performance practices and a changing skill set - that's life. -

a v. disappointing album, would much rather have heard just the two of them singing with minimal accompaniment.
