That makes this sale pretty unattractive to me.

I just donated a whole bunch of cds and dvds to our local library.

Another year is coming to an end, and I just wanted to resurrect this thread. Last year I donated about 10 wine boxes of classical LPs to the library, probably about 500-600 albums in total. What's the fair market value? Who the heck knows. Some could be sold for real money, but most are probably worth a buck. Since I'm not itemizing my donations, I just have my accountant write off $500, for this and all the Salvation Army stuff we donate every year. Seems fair to me. If you go above $500, you must itemize, and fill out the IRS Form 8283, and to me it's just not worth the hassle. The form is for stuff with FMV of $501-$5,000. Obviously you need the paperwork to prove it, in case IRS takes interest. Also, if you think your donations are worth more than $5000 FMV, you have to hire an appraiser. Back to the LPs. Library put them up for sale in their annual drive. I think they were pricing them at $.50 a pop, but I 'm not sure. That was last year. Three weeks ago I went to this year's sale, and the records weren't there. Had they put them in a dumpster, or did someone buy the lot...it's a library mystery. All I know is that my basement has more standing room for other stuff to gather dust. -
Interesting. What about the liner notes and graphics?

I find it improbable that a music label owner wouldn't know why a customer would object to buying a cd-r. Did they at least come with proper tray cards and booklets?

Well, I go to jam-packed local jazz gigs and to near-empty local jazz gigs. This is no different than the late 1990s, when I consciously got into this. In fact, this year I have gone to more local jazz concerts than I ever have since leaving NY for a place 180 miles away a dozen years ago. There are two independent record stores within a 20-30 minute drive that stock large numbers of jazz cds and records, and two local chain store branches that have some. There probably were more shops that closed in the last 15 years than opened, so that's different, but this didn't happen because jazz is in the toilet commercially, according to Nielsen. So this is different than in the pre-iPod era, when I was addicted to hunting the record stores in NY, and could [and would] visit a dozen in a mile radius. However I can and do live with that, since music is easily available in the on-line stores. Then I read this thread, and prospects appear bleak. Yet I see no significant difference in the way things used to be and the way they are. The only irreversible problem is that the originators are dying.

http://www.leorecords.com/?m=christmassale Only GBP2.50 per disc. Now I just have to figure out what to buy. The only Sun Ra title I have from them is Meets Salah Ragab in Egypt. What are you getting?

Fantastic! Even has compartments for cds. ?

I am thankful for my children and wife being healthy, and my mother and in-plaws being alive. It’ll be a chamber Thanksgiving for us today, but next year we will have a full symphony of our extended family over. After so many years I publicly came out as a “never been a turkey lover”, so I picked up two delicious roasted whole chickens at Cabral’s. Cheers to all!

Wow, I was wrong. They are different photos.
-
Yes, I saw that also. I still think it's the same shot, just a little doctored. None of the other parts of the photo are different - clothing and hand, head position. Good catch on Rob's part!

Would've been nice if they followed through on the Fishing bit. Not to mention the peace and love... What does the phrase mean in the context of the box graphic art? What's the connection?

The Lp cover is not perfectly straight, which may affect the appearance. Other than the reissue cover being cropped and lighter, along with the different fonts and number...what am I missing?
-
Yep, four jelly beans are missing from the reissue.
-
From the FB comments by BN: Yes, the Blue Mitchell vinyl reissue that's included was remastered from the original master tapes by Ron McMaster, and was pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI. For me THIS IS a positive factor. $200 is just a bit steep, though...

That Grand Opening.

I should re-read the liner notes from the Berkshire Blues...

I thought he grew up in Brooklyn. On Atlantic Avenue, iirc.

The big man is appearing Saturday at Brown University with their world music ensemble. Tomorrow there'll be a screening of a biographical documentary, followed by the Q&A. I'm thinking - Which non-piano musician influenced you the most? -What impression did Thelonious Monk's music leave on you when you first heard it?

I don’t want to step on your memories, but both the Broadway downtown and broadway uptown locations in NYC were the king and queen of the Tower empire. Sunset was just ok in comparison. The Lincoln center one was classy, and the jazz section was amazing and vast. But the East 4th st and Broadway had the vibe you could never find in LA, or anywhere else. I miss them both.

What will be different in the Japanese version? I hadn't realized that the vocalist on the RTF was the Philip Bailey from the Earth, Wind and Fire.
-
So about Monk being a genius vs. perhaps the most singularly-original pianist and composer...can you give us your most substantive reasoning of his genius status? For instance, how did he influence those that were his contemporaries and the ones that followed?
