  1. No vocals, btw. It was strictly instrumental.
  2. It was an lp reissue , bw cover with a photo of a guy playing vibes.
  3. Was in a record store yesterday, one of the records they were playing sounded interesting, jazz with a reggae undertones, definitely danceable. Tenor or low alto sax, vibes [liked the vibes player better than the sax], other horns, nice rhythm section. The cuts were not long, perhaps 3 min., I dug it. Was told, but forgot the name of the leader, a vibes player. The store clerk/owner said it was Nigerian, from the early 70s. Any idea who it was?
  4. Members 12,684 Active Members 702 First time i used the way back machine, this is the tally from sometime last year. A VERY healthy count. why would someone just turn around and drop it?! Doesn't make sense to me.
  5. We're sorry to report that after nearly 20 years, our beloved jazz discussion forum is no more. As much as we tried to keep it going, the escalating costs and maintenance simply made it untenable. I run a small specialized phpbb-based forum, and the expense is not great at all.
  6. If it's 51 minutes-long, it's really pushing the limit for the LP format. I wonder if the lp master was made from the digital transfer used for the cd version.I would wager the answer is yes, which would mean the two should sound identical. Love the LPs, buy lots of them, but this recent obsession with releasing everything on records is "not making me thirsty". How's the SQ of this cd, guys?
  7. Strong Jeanne Lee influence on this cut. People pay good money to hear MUCH worse than this.
  8. How was I insulting?
  9. One doesn't have to be a genius. Just google the name. https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=maja+rios
  10. A nice , albeit short memoir of his life and work. 90 y.o., a nice run! http://www.njjs.org/p/jj/pdf/JJ_FrontPage_Oct_10.pdf I didn't know he was African-American. Just saw his photo in the link above. Have one of his original 1960s photos of Bill Evans.
  11. Infomercial for Vol.4. Sensuous, sultry, tempting, naughty. http://sonnyrollins.com/project/road-shows-vol-4-holding-the-stage/ Is it saxOphonist, or saxophOnist? I've always pronounced the latter.
  12. One of the coolest album covers ever.
  13. ...while you could've been doing something productive. Like wood-shedding on a bridge nearby. Not so fast, cowboy.
  14. Yes, that's what I meant. Same type of music, with much vigor and technique. Sorry for not being clear the first time. As to the names, the first that come to mind.. Eric Alexander can play with the same force, Lovano, Redman.
  15. Heard him 2x over the years. Didn't enjoy it. Imho the music is night and day, comparing to his heyday 1950s-60s records and leaves many fans feeling lukewarm at best to his later albums. But I'm not a musician, and can't judge it on its technical merits, so that's that. This track also did nothing to me. There are so many tenor players who can, and do play like that. Just my $.02
  16. We'll, it was either that or Roy Ayers at the Blues Alley. The golden rod...
  17. Was this one posted already?
  18. I went to DC for the inauguration with my teenage daughter. It was a wonderful lesson of American democratic process, for both of us. Music-wise, the night prior, on the 19th, we had choice seats at the Kennedy Center, for the National Symphony Orchestra performing the following program Music Director Designate Gianandrea Noseda leads a celebration of America's musical landscape with works ranging from Copland's Lincoln Portrait with live narration by Tony Award(r)-winning actress Phylicia Rashad to Gershwin's beloved Rhapsody in Blue featuring "insightful [and] energetic" (The New York Times) pianist Jon Kimura Parker- 1.The Star-Spangled Banner --Stravinsky arrangement 2.John Williams-Music from the movie Lincoln 3.Aaron Copland-Lincoln Portrait 4.Leonard Bernstein-Fanfare for the Inauguration of JFK 5.John Williams-Suite from the movie, JFK 6.George Gershwin-Rhapsody in Blue Encore was Billy Joel's Scenes from the Italian restaurant, performed solo by Jon Kimura Parker. Also on that day we went to the newly-opened Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture. Only had time to visit the music section, which occupies the whole 4th floor of the museum. I'll post photos later.
  19. The underside is covered with felt. There's only one turn-switch for all the bulbs, which, along with the wire and plug, are definitely not new. I like that every stem can be turned and twisted in any way imaginable. Just googled hydra lamp, for the heck of it. Well, what do you know....not exactly what I have, but..! http://modernism.com/items/1046/floor-lamps/2177-1900-pierre-folie-floor-lamp-hydra https://xxesiecle.wordpress.com/lighting/
  20. I'm late to the party, just read this article, and a dozen years later it's still a p.o.s. All conjecture, no facts, no journalism. He didn't bother interviewing any of Tina's siblings. Some, perhaps, are still living. Eight of them should've produced a few children of their own, who knew uncle Tina full well.
  21. http://www.realclearlife.com/music/rare-version-jazzlife-jazz-book-now-sale/ Each updated volume is signed and numbered. Every copy comes with four signed and numbered, 24 x 20-inch ultrachrome prints. And the entire compilation is packaged in a cloth-covered box. There are only 1,000 collections like this in the world, and each one sells for $2,500.
  22. Get the good ones before they sell out. And they do sell out. http://newportjazzfest.org/tickets
  23. Can you guys help me id this lamp I got at an estate sale a few weeks ago? There was a label on it, but only the glue remains.
