Album Covers Featuring Musicians In Costume
Dmitry replied to duaneiac's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Oh, to be fifteen again... -
So I'm in the SA store, dropping off our semi-annual donation... And THIS is on top of all the Montovanis and the Baston Pops. How it got mixed up with that lot, is one of them mysteries.

The best bookshelf speakers, bar none, that I've ever heard were Linn Tukan.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
Dmitry replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Club d'Elf with John Medeski. A phenomenal show at the storied Columbus Theatre!!! Loved it. -
Does Tod still post here? He was a big time original BN vinyl collector, if memory serves me right.

Funny you should say that. At the Scullers gig the first thing he did when he sat down was to announce that one of the keys had fallen off the organ, and the percussion was broken. I wonder if they did a soundcheck. Anyway, that didn't seem to affect the sound, at least to my ears. I dunno, it just felt that he was holding back, passing time, like a boxing champion in a fight with a no.10-rated challenger. I suppose the gigs can get pretty tedious, understandably. Just my $.02, which cost $170 for the music charge, and food and drinks for two. -

Saw Joey DeFrancesco tonight at Scullers in Boston. I found the band underwhelming. Set lasted just about an hour. Never saw him play before, was expecting a lot mo' greaze. There definitely was some, but it dripped, not poured. Joey didn't break a sweat. -
I'm sorry, but I call bullshit on this appraisal. Well, not the appraisal itself, but the owner and her reaction. No way she had no idea of the value of this unit. Everything can be appraised very easily these days, it would take minutes on-line. Schlepping a large, fragile, and expensive piece to the venue, standing on line for hours, just to burst into hysterical tears...gmafb. Plus, she says she has at least two other units like that..obviously she's a collector. ARS has been known for staged, phony appraisals. This is an example of one.

Amazing. Thanks, Jim. Classical and jazz are neck in neck, virtually identical figures. And sorry figures they are, imho. Yet, live classical concerts gather hundreds, sometimes thousands in audiences.

SOLD Jackie McLean - BLUESNIK BST-84067 LP
Dmitry replied to Dmitry's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Yeah, I have a few of the MM 45rpms, still sealed. it was an impulse buy a few years ago, when they first came out. I know I won't lose money if I decide to sell them. Definitely not my idea of fun listening, even though they sound very good. I can't verify one way or the other that 33rpms are on par with 45rpms. Frankly I just wish they released the whole thing on cd or sacd instead. Packaging of the MM vinyl is phenomenal though. -
Keurig set to sell home beer keg system (spirits too)
Dmitry replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Sometimes I take a sip or two of my wife's coffee. Initially I was afraid that drinking coffee would lead me back into the cigarette habit, and I suppose I'm safe now, but I just don't have the desire to drink it. Nicotine cravings are transient, last a few seconds at most, and i'm used to them, they're almost unnoticeable. -

I couldn't care less, haven't had a complete cup of coffee since I quit smoking, some years ago. That was the deal I made with myself. We do have a Cafitalia machine, which imho beats the snot out of Keurig. I used to drink 3-4 cups of espresso a day. -
Yeah, have a good one!

i'm not sold on this label, but gospeed to them! Interesting bit of information in the NYT article - Jazz accounted for just 1 percent of all record sales in the United States in 2015, according to Nielsen’s year-end report. But jazz buyers do purchase actual albums: Almost half of those jazz records were bought in physical form. I couldn't find the source for this quote in their link, but assuming it's true, only 1% of music sold in the US is jazz?! What percentage was it 10 years ago, anyone knows?

SOLD Jackie McLean - BLUESNIK BST-84067 LP

Yes, it does. I compared it to the Music Matters 45 RPM edition, and while not as refined at the top end of the 45RPM, this one is definitely no slouch. Considering my price is a fraction of the 45rpm.. Boy, that 45RPM business is a pita. Getting up every 7 or 8 minutes to changes sides, I'm not sure I like it... -

The latter is listed as back ordered, let's see if I'll get lucky.. -

I know you're not a vinyl guy, and coming from RVGs, If you haven't heard another digital incarnation of this music, you have no idea how good it can sound. So far, I'm very impressed with these xrcds. -

They must be very low on the remaining stock then? Unless I'm mistaken, at this juncture, 19 titles have been released, 5 more are announced as 'preorder', and the following are oop- Lee Morgan - Tom Cat Sonny Clark - Cool Struttin' Tina Brooks - True Blue Horace Parlan - Speakin' My Piece Well, so far I've compared the XRCD of Bluesnik to my 2000 JRVG and mid-1970s BN vinyl reissue. JRVG is, characteristically, pretty much mono, with little of lower frequencies, and way much of high end. The 1970s blue label with white B vinyl has boomy bass, and sounds better than the JRVG. XRCD easily tops them both, in every aspect, except perhaps I wouldn't mind more low end, but that can be easily remedied by the equalizer on my preamp. Interestingly, the 1970s vinyl's stereo spread is the same as the XRCD, and it was pressed from an original RVG stamper, as is evidenced by the markings on the dead-wax. Tonight, the ultimate test - XRCD vs. Music Matters 45 rpm vinyl.
