I will listen to jazz at any given time of the day. However, the music speaks more clearly and more personally to me at night. It seems more like ‘night music’ for sure. When I’m in my car during the day I might play Steely Dan, early Dire Straits, Phish, Galactic, or MMW. When the sun sets, though, it’s time for the genuine jazz article… Sonny Rollins, Monk, Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, etc.. At night, the horns & piano sound crisper and the drums & bass bang deeper. I can hear all kinds of nuances and detail under the light of darkness as compared to the light of day. Often, when listening to jazz at night, I wonder why I hear little details that I’d never have heard while the sun was shining. Anybody else experience the same?

One positive I do see to this is... Hopefully Mosaic can/will sell enough product to be profitable and continue to issue top-quality jazz boxes so I can keep buying 'em. :rsly:

Wesbed, Why stop? You're doing fine. No reason to go back to lurking. Oh. I don't intend to stop. This has been quite an enjoyable experience, to watch this board grow from the ground up. B) However, once the 'heavies' get to posting their usual stuff, they'll surpass me even if I maintain my current rate. Which is a good thing, I'm not complaining. I'm rather enjoying it, actually. We didn't have a Top Ten list to watch at the old board (we all knew Lon had the 10,000 posts!). The added information on this board is a welcomed.
-
The same for me. It's been fun being in the Top Ten Poster's list. But, my days are numbered. My name will be dropping off soon. Still, I accomplished what I wanted... to keep the board active till the real board posters arrived. I mean, JSngry, Swinnich, and jazzbo are active now. B)

I wanted a copy of the thread that Ron McMaster replied to. No, I'm not being a smartass regarding McMaster. Really, I'd like to be able to re-read what he wrote. Damn Blue Note management.
-
Hmmm... the other things Tommy Boy said were coming, new forums, old forums with a different look, never returned. Just, more was taken away. No more private messages, no images, no quotes, and a language filter that made Blue Note look ignorant as hell. I mean, a jazz board that filters out Sonny S***t (wait, did Stitt ever record on Blue Note)? Dumb, dumb, dumb.

The Desmond/Hall box was my very first Mosaic. I purchased the box brand new from Mosaic, way back when. I didn’t purchase another Mosaic set till I discovered the BNBB and subsequently purchased the Hank Mobley box. Along with Walter Becker & Donald Fagan, my introduction to ‘real’ jazz was from Dave Brubeck & Paul Desmond. I couldn’t get over the sound of Desmond’s saxophone. Nobody sounded like Desmond. I usually find the Desmond/Hall box at the bottom of my stack of Mosaics. When I do pull it out I always wonder why it’s been so long since the last time. Desmond and Hall were meant for each other. They both play with a subtle intensity that can’t be explained. If Paul Desmond played the guitar he’d sound like Jim Hall. If Jim Hall played the saxophone he’d sound like Paul Desmond. The Desmond/Hall box full of enchantment and delight. Each player complements the other to create a very personal, private, yet free sound. Some of the playing is so delicate and so powerful it can snap your mind straight into a trance-like state if you’re not careful. Didn’t Paul Desmond say he played saxophone like a dry martini?

Ed Swinnich. Finally, in the house! Man, where ya been?

Already ordered.

You don't foresee a problem with server space? Just wondering...

Mosaic will have to link to their forum on THIS board.

Jim R: I've used a Mac computer about zero times in my life. I'm not familiar with the Mac operating system. I have a broadband internet connection so I get every update as it is available (for WINxp). I wonder if THIS site is using code that your browser can't correctly decipher? The board software seems very modern and is proably using the newest HTML tags. Just a thought. I'd recommend getting all the updates to Internet Explorer and see what happens. This site could be using some HTML code your browser can’t display (if you don’t have all the updates). I don't know what the newest release of Internet Explorer is for the Mac system.

Waiting for the Boogaloo Sisters... RELEASED!
wesbed replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
b3-er: One: I just placed my order for Waiting for the Boogaloo Sisters. Now I'm waitin' for it! The sound clips are as good as anything I've heard from Galactic or Soulive. I won't know if I can include MMW in my list (of bands yours is comparable to) till I get your CD in the mail. I think MMW is the best active group around. John Medeski is on that organ like nobody's business! I'll be playing your CD as I drive around town in my car. It will replace Galactic and Soulive. Two: Now that some of the regulars are giving their best efforts in the Politics forum... How's the space on your server holding out? -
This brings up a good question. Which forum should the Ebay Redux thread be reduxed in? B)

The Illinois Jacquet box has been in the Running Low category for a while now. Does anybody know how many sets remain? I remember reading, at the BNBB, the Illinois box being described as 'good for being R&B.' The sound clips at Mosaic sound good to me no matter what type of label is placed on the music. As a familiar listener to bebop and the Blue Note sound, what is meant by the term R&B? I mean, I know what R&B referred to in the 1970s. But, the Illinois tunes were recorded in the 1940s. Does R&B mean the music is intended to be dance music or romantic music? Does it mean the songs are focused around Illinois’ playing while the remaining players are used as the background support for Illinois’ horn? Does it mean the solos and rhythms are ‘simplistic’ to be easier on the ear? Does it mean there are no breaks for drum and/or bass solos? Does it mean there are vocals? What makes Illinois R&B rather than bebop?

I was happily surprised to see Jim Anderson had followed this thread from the BNBB. I'd like to see something from Ron McMaster or RVG (I know, only in my jazz dreams). There has been much discussion on these boards (well, the BNBB boards), some intelligent and some not, about the nuances of McMaster and RVG. Speaking for myself, I've developed quite a respect for the work of McMaster of late.

Thanks. I wasn't aware of the Pacific Jazz titles. I'll look them up. Do you know of the specific wording (the title) of the the Pacific Jazz Rudy remasters?

Hey! A new record was set today, a few minutes ago, for the highest number of users ever on this board. b3-er, your enhancements continue to improve the look of the board. Again, much thanks.

I'm liking Carmell's version of Come Rain Or Come Shine. It's dark, mysterious, and soulful all at the same time.
-
Yes, the freedom of having your OWN, non corporate board! You can post what you like. I'm addicted to Grand Theft Auto III presently. It's completely safe violence.

For whom the bell tolls it tolls for the BNBB
wesbed replied to Soul Stream's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Swinnich is still on Tom's tail over at the BNBB. Ed is getting better as he goes! Why ain't he posting over HERE? http://www.bluenote.com/bulletinboard/ubb-...c&f=19&t=000698 -
In this edition, Carmell Jones. I know how to pronounce the ‘Jones’ part of his name. But, how is ‘Carmell’ pronounced? I mean, does it rhyme with the candy, as in caramel? Or, since there is a double-L at the end, is the accent on the ‘mell’ part of the name?

It's kinda hard to believe, to see it now, how many hours I used to spend at the BNBB. What a sad and empty end to what used to be great. The BNBB, it's like a boomtown gone bust.

My quandary, the same as everybody else… I like it here, however, the changes at AAJ are quite positive. I see no problem with having two boards except that I was accustomed to going to ONE source for jazz information, discussion, rants, whatever. I go a lot on 'feel' too.I remember, back in the days of the ‘browser wars,’ I kept using Netscape just because it felt nicer to me. Finally, Internet Explorer became enough more-advanced. At the same time, AOL purchased Netscape and turned it into a generic/corporate/commercial looking thing. I switched to Internet Explorer because it provided the cozier (at least, less overwhelming) feel for me. I feel the same way about this site. It seems cozier, friendlier, less obstructed. I believe we will all trend to the site that proves livelier. I’m kinda waiting to see where the action goes. I’m hoping it moves here if only one site remains active. Watching THIS board grow has been quite enjoyable. The number of Members continues to climb. Meanwhile, I can keep two browser windows open, if necessary. My computer won’t complain.

This is both humorous and sad. http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_...w.harlem.org%2F
