  1. I haven't been to their site in a while. I didn't know they were off. How long were they gone? Any explanation as to why they were gone?
  2. 1942. The year closest to the beginning of bebop. B)
  3. I chose 18, but don't know why.
  4. Wow, what a poll! I narrowed my choice to Sonny Clark and Horace Silver. Hmmm... Silver is my choice. Horace sounds like Blue Note to me. Although Sonny Clark is a very close second. Clark may have been my first choice on a different day.
  5. My user name is a conglomeration of the first three letters of my first name and the first three letters of my last name. Damn, I wish I had a more colorful explanation.
  6. I mean, like, who's not going to choose blue?
  7. I was listening to Jacknife just last night. I would give it a review. B)
  8. I purchased the Gerald Wilson Mosaic in the post BNBB period. I purchased the box due to suggestions on THIS board. For me, Mosaic is still selling merchandise due to suggestions of a bulletin board although not the BN bulletin board.
  9. I've had the exact same thought. I'm surprised the Most Ever number has never set a new record. While, at the same time, the number of members has continued to climb steadily.
  10. I haven't been posting near as much lately. I've been busy doing other things. I, too, appreciate the political forum on this board. I don't agree with all posted opinions but I do agree with the right to post 'em.
  11. What is this, the old BNBB? Feck. There are pictures of beer and women. Whoo hoo!! I've been missing those days. Soul, I live in Tucson, where did you see the the mangled beer run? As in, which part of town?
  12. I've not listened to the Donald Byrd this week. My Gerald Wilson Mosaic arrived in the mail a couple of days ago and I purchased three new CDs from a 'Borders' visit (when I'd planned to purchase nothing). I know the goal, on this Board, is to write new reviews, posts, etc.. I wrote an excellent review on this CD at the BNBB. Alas, I've not been inspired to write another review. The BNBB = pisses me off (I can't get a copy of my own words anymore).
  13. I hardly ever look at the AAJ page. I know not what goes on over there. I monitored it for a few days and I wish it well. However, so much of the discussion on that board, to me, is 'been there, done that.' I feel 'at home' HERE. While I understand this Board is not focused around politics... I also understand that we are currently in a 'high politics' time in our history. I believe it's natural for our interest in jazz to lessen till the political scene calms. I will admit, some of my regular 'jazz enjoyment time' has been replaced by CNN & FoxNews of late. I haven't forgotten it and I will get back to 'all that jazz' when time permits. I'm glad there is an open Politics forum maintained on this board.
  14. Teagarden is yet another jazz personality that I'd never have known if it hadn't been for the BNBB. I believe Teagarden to be quite good. I'll be purchasing this set sometime in the near future, thanks (again) to Mosaic Records. :rsmile:
  15. I'm the one who wrote the "Monk-o-phone" post at the BNBB. I'm wishing I could pull my words off the BNBB and enter them here. But...
  16. Who will choose the specific CD?
  17. Man, you just NOW discovered this? I've been spying on you guys since day one. B)
  18. I've never been in to the idea of a 'boycott' due the closing of the BNBB. I like the music for the music regardless of whether Blue Note maintains a BBoard or not. I've written many times that I'd purchased several titles that I'd not have purchased had it not been for the BNBB. I'm now purchasing titles that I'd not have purchased had it not been for the Organissimo Forum. I just placed my order for the Gerald Wilson Mosaic due to the posts in this thread. Thanks for the opinions.
  19. Man, here I go again... learning about jazz. I'm not familiar with Randy Weston or Bennie Green. I was concerned, when the BNBB was brought down, that my outlet for jazz learning might be hindered. But, no. B)
  20. Per a comment from AfricaBrass in this thread: I'm on the fence about the Moncur set. I've got everything that has been out on cd already and I have the unreleased material on vinyl. On the old board, a few people brought up issues with the sound of the Moncur set. Any comments/suggestions? Should I hold off? I thought it a good time to start a separate Moncur Select thread. Grachan Moncur Mosaic Select
  21. I purchased the Moncur Select because I didn't have any of what the box offered. However, I delayed purchasing the Destination Out Conn in anticipation of the Moncur Select box.
  22. I’ve had this set for a couple of weeks. It’s like a single malt scotch, it gets better and better with time. On the initial run-through I thought the first disk was excellent. I’m embarrassed to admit, the second disk, on the first listen, seemed like a big band somehow reduced in size. I wasn’t overly impressed. The third disk has the ‘folk’ tunes, which seemed good, at first, but not great. However, upon repeated listening, there are a LOT of good things here. Carmell Jones plays like the best copy of Clifford Brown I’ve heard (and I’m in a Clifford Brown mood right now) yet maintains his own sound. Its too bad Carmell didn’t receive more recognition in his day. Carmell's version of Come Rain Or Come Shine makes you want to cry out to your momma (or something). I’ve heard the name of Harold Land but never knew much about him. What a player! He fits perfectly with Carmell’s style. I can’t say whom Land sounds like but, whatever he’s doing, he’s doing it quite well. He’s got a very warm and earthy sound. The quintet sessions with Carmell Jones on the trumpet, Harold Land on the saxophone, and Frank Stazzeri on the piano are excellent. There are well-crafted and well-played songs from all involved. At times, Jones and Land exchange bars and play off one another, then come back together for the melody. The ‘folk tunes’ open and close with the familiar melody but, in between the open and the close, there is some very fine playing. Very fine, indeed. I’m not familiar with Gerald Wilson. However, in becoming more familiar with his arrangements on disk two, he has written some swinging material. Wilson creates a warm world for which the horns to play. Jones’ trumpet and various saxophones play everywhere out in front of the arrangement of sound. Angel Eyes has a dark, foggy, yet cozy feel about it. Canadian Sunset has a light, friendly, and somehow familiar sound. Is it just me or does Celery Stalks At Midnight seem somehow reminiscent of Jeepers, Creepers? I like the sound of the trombones (Tricky Lofton?) as they fade in and out through the set. Damn, them boys is good.
  23. I have no knowledge of the New Orleans Mosaic but it does interest me if for no other reason than to learn and enjoy. I've read that Mosaic can include sound clips on their page only if the original owner allows it. It's too bad there is nothing to listen to, via the Mosaic site, for this box.
  24. The revolving Blue Note is just cool as hell. B)
  25. JSngry: I very much agree with what you write regarding the diaspora. I've been all over THIS board and have been monitoring the AAJ board at random times since the demise of the BNBB. The sociological aspects have been quite interesting and fun. I thought I was the only one who was following this phenomenon. I'm glad to know I was wrong. If it wasn't for the loss of the old threads & knowledge base at the BNBB, there seems to be more new information now, amongst two boards, than ever.
