  1. Lazaro, I think Randy Weston was in Europe at the time of the 1994 Festival, I have a broadcast from Switzerland date 9/4. He did appear at the Chicago Jazz Festival on 9/6/1992 with his Spirits of Our Ancestors band, which was broadcast by WBEZ-FM and carried by additional public radio stations. I taped the broadcast, it includes: African Village Bedford-Stuyvesant African Sunrise The Healers African Cookbook The band included Talib Kibwe (T.K. Blue), Billy Harper, Benny Powell, Jamil Nasser, Clyde Lucas and Neil Clarke, with arrangements by Melba Liston.
  2. The only thing now published on their website is a memorial to John Norris (www.coda1958.com). I was a contributor at the time Coda ceased publication and I had a long talk with the new owner the next summer. He told me that he was intending to get it started again. One new issue (Nov/Dec?) was listed as being published that I never received, nor was I paid for anything of mine that may have appeared in it. I believe it is gone for good.
  3. Why would anyone fall this? I would think most of us would go to law enforcement, especially the FBI, if we thought this was an international crime issue.
  4. I can find anything filed in seconds because I started alphabetizing my collection a long time ago, before the CDs got into 5 digits. The new arrivals and unheard stuff isn't strictly alphabetized, but may be soon when some new shelving arrives next week.
  5. I just got an email from Russell Gloyd, Dave Brubeck's long time manager. It seems that some additional tracks from Dave Digs Disney have been located and a further expanded reissue is planned for 2011. Columbia has numerous unissued sessions in the vault, including a Brubeck quartet with clarinetist Bill Smith tentatively to be titled Witches' Brew which will likely not be released.
  6. PM Sent: Wanted: Doc Cheatham: Live at the Windsor Jazz Series $6
  7. I think Frank Zappa's instrumental "Filthy Habits" has a rather sinister edge to it.

  14. Storyville just sent me a review copy. The sound quality beats earlier reissues I've owned and there were several tracks that seemed to be previously unissued according to Timmer's Ellingtonia discography.
  15. I think Brubeck has mentioned in several interviews that Fantasy released several live albums that were recorded without his knowledge. He wasn't happy with the piano on the Columbia LP Jackpot (he describes in the liner notes how the new baby grand wasn't holding its pitch) and the circumstances behind The Last Time We Saw Paris (difficulties with Desmond, who missed at least once concert during that tour) make it an album that he would rather forget.
  16. I went round and round with half.com about a saw cut not necessarily being a promo to no avail. I haven't listed any sawcut items on Amazon, though saw of the sawcut items were things I acquired in the Oldies Fantasy clearance sale, which were obviously not promos. There's no arguing about the barcode stamps, punchouts and drilled UPCs, as those are inevitably promos.
  17. Amazon prohibits sellers from selling promo CDs while one long time dealer I know said he was kicked out by Amazon for selling cutouts. Personally, I don't see the big deal about selling sawcut LPs or CDs, as they are often discontinued items rather than promos, so long as the dealer is specific about the cuts and the condition of the disc and cover/booklet.
  18. You might want to check out some of Shearing's Concord recordings, particularly the fun-filled meeting with Hank Jones, The Spirit of 176 and his solo dates. I found him to be a delightful, funny interview subject and enjoyed him both times I saw him perform, in a quintet and duo with Neil Swainson.

  20. I've tried to watch it but ended up feeling like it was not worth the effort. The list of artists Burns ignored or barely touched on is long, while someone who actually knew something about jazz (Burns owned a handful of CDs when he got started) would have easily done a better job, given the same funding. One example: Why was Wynton Marsalis interviewed about what it was like playing with Duke Ellington, which he obviously never did? Clark Terry would have been the logical person to interview.
  21. PM sent: Zoller, Dauner, Ronnie Ross "Night Bounce" - (Wewerka) $6.00 Vince Guaraldi Trio "Cast your Fate to the Wind" - (Fantasy) $6.00 soundtrack: Martial Solal "Bout de Souffle" - (Uni Emarcy digipack) $13.00
