  1. I think he played the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 1976, when I was at Tulane. Unfortunately, the festival was scheduled right in the middle of final exams, so I never made it. These days I wouldn't bother, since the jazz has been pushed out of the limelight. An artist like Bruce Springsteen as a headliner has no appeal to me.
  2. They sound so easy until you learn about how drawn out the process is, even for one.
  3. Grace Kelly has been recording for her own label since the beginning, PAZZ.
  4. I don't think Lee Konitz or Phil Woods would have bothered to record with Grace Kelly if they didn't see something in her playing. Woods was very complimentary of her when I interviewed him ten or so years ago. I met her at IAJE very early (she had just released her second CD) and she has sent me a lot of her work over the years, though her recent focus toward more pop-oriented music and vocals haven't been as interesting to me.
  5. Too bad they aren't putting some of these listings on line for those of us who live farther away and can't make it there on such short notice.
  6. I own all of them, don't let these bargains pass you by...
  7. June, August or September would be workable for me. There's no shortage of music at my house and hope to include a few surprises.
  8. I did a phone interview with him in 2007 prior to his 50th anniversary concert and he told me he inhaled quite a bit of dust in his home in lower Manhattan on 9/11 and during a visit to it afterward. That's a very nice interview, thanks for sharing it.
  9. About the only Ellington song I don't like was "One More Time For the People," a piece that would cause Cootie Williams to storm off stage when Duke called for it, according to Mercer Ellington's biography of his father. When I finally heard this feature for vocalist Tony Watkins in a concert DVD, I understood why. The piece was supposed to be targeted to young audiences and it just didn't fit the diverse yet timeless Ellington book all that well. It is little wonder that it never turned up on any of the posthumous Ellington albums over the decades since his death in 1974. After looking over some of the Squatty Roo label releases featuring Duke Ellington and others, a lot of them seem to be CDrs, which I am hesitant to acquire. I also noticed a few bootlegs that had rather wretched sound in their LP incarnations and I can't imagine thet they would be any better on CD or CDr.
  10. I just made a gift targeted to him through Jazz Foundation of America.
  11. https://www.allmusic.com/album/an-npr-jazz-christmas-with-marian-mcpartland-and-friends-ii-mw0000918584 This is the link to the first recorded version of Randy Weston's "The Icicle Song," with my review. It probably was retitled for this new CD.
  12. I own all of the Mosaic Selects and none of them that I recall were marked promo. Some of my large boxed sets had promo hand written in them when I received them from Mosaic, but not always. Hoppy T. Frog: I have always found that talking directly to your credit card issuer gets results on substandard products. The only time I recall a problem on ebay was with a se3ller who sent a DVD boxed set of DVDrs that were obviously home made and tried to claim that they were legit. I made him refund me for the purchase price, shipping and return shipping to send them back. Try ebay and paypal resolutions first, but never use a bank account with pp, give yourself an extra layer of protection.
  13. My music library is two floors down, so it may be an hour or two before I can check.
  14. "Children's Icicle Song" appears on a Christmas Jazz anthology I own, perhaps one of the McPartland Piano Jazz Christmas CDs.
  15. The ultimate foul-up by Richard Bock is the mess he made with Jim Hall's Pacific Jazz album. Editing out many of Carl Perkins and Red Mitchell's solos, then adding the overdubbed drums of Larry Bunker for a later edition. Some people should not be allowed anywhere near editing equipment.
  16. It sounds like one of those cases where it is going to depend what was written in the original contract. I'll leave it to the lawyer's as my opinion isn't needed.
  17. I think that ArtistShare offered some bonus download only music with the multi disc Jim Hall set, so if it is still available from them, it might be worth getting it directly from ArtistShare.
  18. If Scarecrow put it out, it would stay in print for years.
  19. Victoria Principal Alan Jay Lerner James Dean
  20. You would have thought this book would have been a perfect fit for Scarecrow Press, which published Terry Gibbs' ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award-winning memoir. The download excerpts of Phil's 'Life in E-Flat' and his terrific Phil in the Gap column for the Al Cohn Memorial Newsletter were very entertaining.
  21. I am reminded of the story of jazz violinist Joe Venuti opening the floor to requests and a woman promptly asked for "Feelings." His response was "'Feelin's'? Why that's the worst $%^&!!! song I ever heard. That's it no more requests!" I am pretty sure that story appeared in Bill Crow's Jazz Anecdotes. "Feelings" has had a lot of competition for worst song over the past 4 plus decades...
  22. Glad I picked up the boxed set years ago before the label deleted so much good stuff.
  23. I talked to Jill Goodwin when we met at the Deerhead Inn in October, where I also met Bill Goodwin. Phil's autobiography is being edited with additional material rewritten (I've forgotten who is doing it, but it may have been Ted Panken), the plan is to release it as an e-book. Bill is at work digitizing a number of unissued concerts featuring Phil's quartets and quintets, though I think he is taking the oldest ones first.
  24. I once sold a CD on Amazon, mailed it and the buyer didn't receive it. I had affixed postage and skipped a trip to the post office for a tracking number. After asking permission to wait a couple of more weeks for it to show up, I granted a full refund including postage. About two months later, the buyer told me that the package arrived with uncanceled stamps. Who knows what the USPS did with it for all that time.
  25. At least your not getting a FB friend request or link request on LinkedIn from someone who has passed away....
