  1. Excellent, even by her usual high standard.
  2. Carol - Todd Haynes (2015) Certain Women - Kelly Reichardt (2017)
  3. They Shall Not Grow Old is excellent. Summer Of Rockets BBC Very good cast, everything looks great on paper, it even has Timothy Spall. Unfortunately the end result is a total mess, teetering on the edge of dire.
  4. I rewatched the entire series ( in Blu Ray) earlier this year too. It was richly rewarding. Years And Years BBC episode two Still not sure what to make of this. It has some interesting takes on the near future, with Emma Thompson as a wannabe Trump, which are diluted by a rather bewildering kitchen sink type family drama. My main impression was that, if this is reflective of the current lay of the land, I am very out of tune with popular culture trends in UK.
  5. Us - Jordan Peele (2019) Very well directed. Interesting, original and smart but I can imagine some people disliking it. I've a feeling I'll be watching this multiple times. Great performance from Lupita Nyong'o.
  6. It felt very rushed and unsatisfactory. Dany's 'descent into madness' was terribly badly done and deserved a season to fully flesh out such a major plot development. The murder and melting of the throne were a damp squid when they should have been a great Shakespearean climax. Wouldn't the Unsullied have promptly torn Jon limb from limb in bloody vengeance? The meeting to decide the new boss was unconvincing. The choice of new boss was awful. The scene made a fair case for making him king but it felt very weak and had zero emotional resonance. The series of vignettes at the end were pat, too neat and anticlimatic. 'Nuff said. Episode three Has anyone been watching this amazing mini series ? Hyper realistic reconstruction of the events and wider snapshot of late Soviet Union. It's superb, immersive and wonderfully acted. Highly recommended.
  7. The Invisible Woman - Ralph Fiennes (2013)
  8. He was a truly great vocalist.
  9. Catch 22 Four episodes in, two to go. Solid but unremarkable.
  10. Blancanieves - Pablo Berger (2012) Arbitrage - Nicholas Jarecki (2012)
  11. The Conversation - Francis Ford Coppola (1974) Dial M For Murder - Alfred Hitchcock (1954)
