  1. Don't know if it's unique, but this is French too (source)...
  2. Thanks to Google, another French cover. Who the heck are these people pictured on the cover?? (source)
  3. Here's a freaky looking alternate 70's(?) cover for "Somethin' Else", from France. (source).
  4. Some googling turned this up, a French single (source). Don't know if it's unique to that market though, but here 'tis anyway...
  5. I have both the "Malcolm X Memorial" and "Spanish Suite", and they're both great! A little low-fi in the recording-quality department, but nothing that bothers me (think Sun Ra recording techniques). "Spanish Suite" is a little long in the tooth (about 45 minutes of material in one long suite, that could have easily been 25-30 minutes), but it's still a lot of fun. I had a chance to get "Armageddon" but was able to sample it first at a listening station, and ended up not biting on that one. (Short disc, and half the tracks didn't do it for me.) I've never heard "On The Beach" nor the more recent "African Skies" - but I am definitely curious about both. If you're searching on Dusty (or elsewhere, I presume), be sure to search on both "Phil Cohran" and "Philip Cohran" -- there are titles listed each way (or just search on "Cohran" only).
  6. Not WWI, but close enough... Amazing Color Photos Of The Great Depression
  7. Just stumbled on this, which I'd never seen before (source) which gets me wondering... Were there were other covers unique to non-US foreign territories??
  8. Previous thread, and it turns out a couple people here have this single. Edit: and -- HA!! -- couw posted the same French 45 cover I did!! What a gas!
  9. Also stumbled on this, which I'd never seen before (source).
  10. No new info, but stumbled on a good photo of the single...
  11. Is this (below) the same thing?? And if so, then being on Vee-Jay, is it more 'legit' than the Fresh Sound issue above?? I understood the Fresh Sound versions of these to be grey-market (at best), but I was not expecting to see this just now when I went looking around for the track listing of the '68 set with George Coleman (I only have the '67 date with Hank). source
  12. Just saw this elsewhere, and thought I'd share...
  13. Don't worry, it really plays. Says so right on the box.
  14. Happy to have had the chance to put you guys up for the night. Really, people, don't miss Johnny's band if you ever get the chance. Top drawer!
  15. Pettifog Saw it in quote by John Stewart in this story. What a cool word; I hope to remember it when I have a chance to use it.
  16. Fun project, and often overlooked. I see copies in the dollar bins to this day, and often pick them up to pass along to the right people.
  17. Heard the band for the first time last night, and for those of you in Denver, Boise, Ketchum, Missoula, and Moscow -- do NOT miss this group between now and Sunday. At the risk of hyperbole, "amazing" doesn't even begin to cover it. Kind of like a little more hyper version of the Either/Orchestra, with great writing and arrangements, and even better soloing. Johnny, that's one hell of a band you've got there. Thanks for a great night!
  18. Great! Thanks so much for this, both as a guitarist and a jazz musician. Christian got me out of my musical diapers at around age 17, when I first heard him. There was no turning back, and R&R would never again be taken seriously. I'm still working on what I got from Charlie Christian. Can you forward this to the guy? Or show me where you found it and I will. I'll be glad to direct him here, and you can find him at either of the links in my original post -- the first to the board he posted on, and the 2nd to the blog entry where the actual interview is found. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend seeing his full interview with Goodman - it's the link that you quoted that's in dark red text.
  19. It's my go-to for documentation of Tyrone Washington's brief stay in the Messengers, of which I still have some vague hope a tape will turn up some day.
  20. That would be this: Chronology of Art Blakey (and the Jazz Messengers) By Steve Schwartz and our own Michael Fitzgerald.
  21. I don't know this date, but an Amazon review HERE says... Bit more complete list of personnel, recording date, and the track-listing HERE. And here's some sales info and/or a review, HERE.
