  1. (In about 1989, when I was a Sophomore in college), KOB was the first Miles album I really ever heard in its entirety. ...but, I also got Nefertiti* at the exact same time (KOB and Nefertiti were flip sides of a 90-minute cassette a friend made for me) -- so I listened intently to BOTH of them at the same time (just flipping the tape over each time each side was over). BOTH left an enormous impression on me, but KOB no more so than Nefertiti. As such, I almost literally saw them as flip sides of the same coin, and each one informed my understanding of the other. Each one had lots of space, but with a little (or a lot) more going on in the background (during the space in the solos) in the case of the Nefertiti side. KOB was iconic as all get-out by the late 80's, but even then, not quite to the degree I think it is today. AND I think that its continual rise in perceived importance can only be mostly based on its inherent worth. Like Jim (and many others here), I don't need to hear it very often any more. But it's a little like 'scripture' when I do (and I say that as an atheistic leaning agnostic Unitarian). It's like scripture in that, like it or not, it is truly iconic. And it may be way overexposed (if not actually overplayed) -- but that's not the fault of the date itself. It is what it is because of what it is, and no measure of idolatry will change that a whole lot, one way or another -- no matter what any of us think of that idolatry. I think I spin KOB about an average of once per year these days, if even that much. But I never mind hearing it, whether by choice or by chance. *In this case, the side of the tape with Nefertiti on it was filled out with the individual Sorcerer track "Prince of Darkness" tacked on the end.
  2. Get at least four canvas bags for every car in your household, and KEEP THEM IN THE CAR (or cars). When you buy things, bring them in the house, and then immediately hang the bags on the inside doorknob of the front door -- so they get put back out in the car the next time you go out. My wife and I had canvas bags for years, but always forgot them at home, time and time again. The only thing that's ever worked for us is to keep them in the car, in every car (we only have two cars). Works like a charm.
  3. Like I said before, charge $1 for every bag (otherwise given out by the store now for free), and DON'T charge $1 if you bring your own bags in and use them instead -- and that'll reduce the number of excess bags being used by 98%.
  4. So, in terms of electric sax specifically, what Eddie Harris dates should I be on the lookout for?? Where should I start?? Preference for dates that have been on CD at one time or another -- but if there are "must have" LP-only things to consider, lemme know that too.
  5. Thanks for the tip!! Here it be... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVrmOYHkxH8

  7. The link to order took me to amazon.com, where both CDs are available for pre-order (Sept. 30 release). at Amazon: Dreams Come True and Trio! Live @ Artpark [LIVE] Both already have audioclips of every track. covers...
  8. I think this one kicks ass! "Hopscotch" (listen to the whole tune on Youtube) (Not by Charles Rouse), really by Joe Chambers -- from Charlie Rouse's "Two Is One" on Strata East (1974-ish) This is the only version of this tune I've ever heard, but I'd love to hear if it's been covered anywhere else.
  9. As luck would have it, I just stumbled on these clips - totally by accident. Seemed to fit the topic of this thread... George Benson w/ McCoy Tyner -- 'Round Midnight

    Sam Rivers

Ah, but do you think it should have stayed in the can??
  11. I'm also more towards the WOW side on this one, but can see where others might think otherwise. (But then again, wouldn't "others" always be predisposed to think "other"-wise?? )
  12. Seemed like a good thread to post this in... Singer John Gary plays "Do Re Me" with a Bow and Arrow (1966)
  13. ...AND (and I'm not making this up), AND... "in return, the federal government will receive a 79.9% stake in the company." The government just paid $85 billion dollars to buy 80% of AIG??? What the holy motherfucking fuck???? source
  14. I've got this one here at home, and we love it... HP Color LaserJet 2600n Printer (color) Got ours for a good bit less than the price they have listed at Amazon (where the link above goes to) -- I think we only paid $420 for it, or something like that. (We got it on sale at an Office Depot store, didn't get it on-line.) Fast, SHARP print (even in color), really excellent for the price. Plenty of reviews to look through at the link above. Looks like people generally rate it pretty high (mostly 5's and 4's). Edit: Yeah, I know, you said you didn't need/want color. There may be a similar HP B&W printer, and that may well be the way to go. Just wanted to give a thumbs up to this particular HP printer, and I presume similar ones would be equally good.
  15. "New Look, Same Great Taste!!" Quit changing how the fucking packaging looks. Just quit it!!
  16. My theory is to make disposable plastic (or paper) grocery bags the same price as the reusable canvas bags. In other words, charge $2 per bag, no matter what kind it is, paper, plastic, or canvas. If everyone had a pay a $2 surcharge for every bag they DIDN'T bring to the store for reuse, that'd fuckin' cure people REAL quick of using BILLIONS of 'disposable' bags per year. I'm serious.
  17. A lot easier to just paste over them with Obama stickers. That's what I do.
  18. I hate that there are TWO separate "yellow-pages" type phone directory companies now (at least in most major cities). EVERY business has to buy listings in BOTH versions (so double the expense for them), and the public is never really sure they're looking at EVERY listing for a particular business type (i.e. "locksmiths"), unless they look in BOTH directories, and consider the superset of the listings found in both. And DOUBLE the wasted paper being printed (needlessly) for what most people look up on-line anyway, I would imagine.
  19. Here's Rick and David Gilmour, live in 2006... Arnold Layne (with Richard Wright on lead vocals)
  20. One of my favorite early Floyd tunes was one of Rick's. Check this out... God, I love that song.
  21. From the BBC. It's so short, I'm going to quote it in full... RIP, Rick Wright
  22. -- on Night Music. If only she could...
  23. BTW, I asked MC about the unreleased Tyrone things just a couple weeks ago, and about the McLean date above, he specifically said (and I quote)... ..."The McLean session is no where to be found"... -- MC
  24. re: the original clip... What gets me is they're so fucking calm about, and that one guy just hangs there for what seems like forever. Maybe the scariest thing I've seen on the web, ever.
