OK, I just stumbled on this... link: Our 8 Favorite Movies That Are In Black And White Even Though Color Was Available Which also gives me an excuse to start this thread, AND to ask this question... Does anybody remember an art-house movie from about 12-15 years ago, in Black & White, about a pair of twins who were separated at birth, one having a rather poor ($) working-class upbringing, and the other having an uber-rich, multi-millionaire type upbringing. And if my vague memory is right, when the poor twin discovers the rich twin (after they’re both adults), the poor twin sets out to murder his rich brother -- and then take his place (after all, they are twins, and identical twins at that), impersonating him. OK, so far, so good. Thing is, the actors who play the roles of the twins (who are 'identical' remember), one of the actors is White, and the other is Black (and I'm talkin' a "Miles Davis" shade of black, at that). Other characters in the movie who discover that they're brothers are "astounded at the resemblance" -- even though one of the actors is lily white, and the other back as night. Can anyone here remember such a movie (it may have been British), or does someone with better Google-fu want to take a crack at it?? It was SUCH a cool movie (and so incredibly well shot), I'd love to try and rent it sometime -- if it's ever been reissued on DVD.

help sort Chick's Tones for Joan's Bones / Inner Space
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
And come to think of it, I think a friend of mine has the Japanese issue of this -- so I would harbor no guilt about burning a copy, and putting my new (paid for @ $13 new, and fully legit) Collectables copy of "Inner Space" in a slimline 2CD case, with the burn of the Japanese version in the front position. -

help sort Chick's Tones for Joan's Bones / Inner Space
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
Just ordered the Collectables version (8 tracks) from Dusty -- as long as I was getting some other stuff there. Yeah, the sound won't be nearly as good as the Japanese issue -- but I'm sure it'll be half the cost that way. -
This is somewhere between "pretty good" and "pretty darn good" - if you know what I mean. (I've got the original LP.) Especially the side-long version of "Power to the People" (a tune NOT on the official Lighthouse recordings)... date: 1970/09 (circa); location: unknown location Henderson, Joe - ts; Shaw, Woody - tp; Cables, George - el p; McClure, Ron - b, el b; White, Lenny - dr. 1. Invitation (Kaper/Webster) 2. Punjab (Henderson) 3. Power to the People (Henderson) Henderson, Joe and Shaw, Woody -- Jazz Patterns (yeah, this is a boot, or nearly so.)

This sure looks interesting... date: 1967/11/15; location: unknown location Shaw, Woody - tp, flg; Terry, Buddy - ts; Thomas, Joe - ts; Porter, Robbie - bs (1); Young, Larry - org; Chase, Jiggs - org; Richardson, Wally - gtr (1); Lewis, Jimmy - b; Gladden, Eddie - dr; Terry Girls, The - voc. 1. Natural Soul (Sunday Go to Meeting Blues) 6:00 2. Don't Be So Mean 5:35 3. The Revealing Time 12:35 Terry, Buddy -- Natural Soul (And this can't have ever been out on CD, am I right??)

(everything here is cut-n-paste from the AMG, for better or for worse) Tones for Joan's Bones (all versions that I can find on-line, both LP and CD) seems to have these 4 tracks... 1 Litha Corea 13:36 2 This Is New Gershwin, Weill 7:41 3 Tones for Joan's Bones Corea 6:11 4 Straight up and Down Corea 12:34 While the the seemingly original issue of Inner Space includes these 6 (with 2 tracks overlapping the above Tones for Joan's Bones)... 1 Straight up and Down Corea 12:34 2 Litha Corea 13:31 3 Inner Space Corea 9:20 4 Windows Corea 8:47 5 Guijira Corea 12:20 6 Trio for Flute, Bassoon and Piano Corea 5:07 and there's a more recent "Collectables" CD version of Inner Space with the following tracks (seemingly everything)... 1 Straight Up and Down Corea 12:32 2 This Is New Gershwin, Weill 7:38 3 Tones for Joan's Bones Corea 6:05 4 Litha Corea 13:29 5 Inner Space Corea 9:20 6 Windows Corea 8:45 7 Guijira Corea 12:18 8 Trio for Flute, Bassoon and Piano Corea 5:07 So, it sure looks like the 8 track "Collectables" version is the way to go, correct?? Is that the best and most complete way to pick up this material?? Or is there anything ELSE out there, related to these sessions, that isn't included on the 8 track CD?? (Thanks in advance.)

Speeding / Traffic Ticket Blues

The best way to escape from a cop... Officer: May I see your Driver's license? Driver: I don't have one. I had it suspended when I got my 5th DUI. Officer: May I see the owner's card for this vehicle? Driver: It's not my car. I stole it. Officer: The car is stolen? Driver: That's right. But come to think of it, I think I saw the owner's card in the glove box when I was putting my gun in there. Officer: There's a gun in the glove box? Driver: Yes sir. That's where I put it after I shot and killed the woman who owns this car and stuffed her in the trunk. Officer: There's a BODY in the TRUNK?!?!? Driver: Yes, sir. Hearing this, the Officer immediately called his Captain, the car was quickly surrounded by police, and the Captain approached the Driver to handle the tense situation. Captain: Sir, can I see your license? Driver: Sure. Here it is. It was valid. Captain: Who's car is this? Driver: It's mine, Here's the registration. Captain: Could you slowly open your glove box so I can see if there's a gun in it? Driver: Yes, sir, but there's no gun in it. Sure enough, there was nothing in the glove box. Captain: Would you mind opening your trunk? I was told you said there's a body in it. Driver: No problem. Trunk is opened; no body. Captain: I don't understand it. The Officer who stopped you said you told him you didn't have a license, stole the car, had a gun in the glove box, and that there was a dead body in the trunk. Driver: Yeah, I'll bet he told you I was speeding, too. -

socializing cats--advice?
Rooster_Ties replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Keep the cats in separate parts of the house for a week or so (like you're already doing). Pick a few hours a day and let the new cat roam around the house, with the cat you already had going in the room where you had the new cat held up. Do that for about a week. Then turn 'em both loose, with full access to the house. Have separate feeding areas (each with water too), and assuming your house is big enough -- two separate litter boxes (especially if you have a multi-floor house, one litter box per floor). -
A bit, but I certainly don't think he screwed things up either. Kinda interesting to hear him in such a forward-looking context.

But I answered your question. Just a reference to your comment in the thread about multiple album covers from the same photo-sessions (when I suggested opening the thread up to out-takes from any photo-session that was used to make an album cover). How's about you and I both clean up this thread (deleting all our extranious non-topic comments), and pretend this never happened. Cheers!! -- Tom

Was thinking recently how so many of my favorite 60's hard-bop dates all seem to be of bands with three-horn or four-horn front-lines. In such cases, the arranging possibilities seem almost to be exponentially greater than with two horns. What are your favorites?? -- particularly in terms of the quality of the arrangements found therein. Who were/are some of the best arrangers of small groups with multi-horn front-lines??

It'll be good to have that Sam Rivers date out there again. I always thought it was the most easily overlooked session out of all of Sam's four BN dates, and the one that most looked forward to some of his later work.

What's your favorite Stanley Turrentine session?

I may be the only one here with this opinion, but "Blue Hour" puts me to sleep every time. Never made it through more that 2-3 cuts, at most. (Bonus disc too for the most part, though not as much as the first disc.) -
They're saying that back for the 60th Anniversary Edition.

Dizzy Reece -- "Comin' On!" Edit: I can't tell you the first date I ever heard him on, but this was the first one I where I *really* took notice of him. He's a good player in any context -- but I think he's a much better hard-bop guy, than soul jazz player -- even though he's much better known for his more soul-jazz leaning dates.
