  1. Not heights, but this looks scary as hell... http://vimeo.com/1654340?oct-39
  2. with Kenny Burrell, audioclips available HERE.
  3. I was thinking the same thing. Gack!!
  4. ...an "oxidental" orchestra??
  5. ...the "lively" arts??
  6. An even bigger copy.
  7. Done fixed it now. I was trying to crank out this thread as I was due out the door to another meeting.
  8. Me bringing up old threads again... Hey, check out the "choral" music starting just after 3:30 in this Youtube clip (until about 7:45) -- which I described below, gosh, 5 years ago -- before there even was Youtube. Totally wack!! All those "Planet of the Apes" soundtracks were cool as hell!!! I only know the music from the movies (which I've only seen a time or two). I probably should seek out the actual soundtrack recordings someday.
  9. OK, I'm not always in the mood for this one. But I do think it is fascinating... Other Aspects Yes, released on Blue Note -- but my memory is that they were all private recordings that Eric had made, which were in his possession (later his family's), not seeing the light of day until this CD (in the late 80's). The 15-minute composition"Jim Crow" is powerful stuff (with an operatic soprano, no less). "Improvisations and Tukras" (with traditional Indian (India) instruments) is curious and interesting (at least once, if admittedly not so much for repeated spins). And the solo flute tracks were and are always welcome in my book (I've always thought Dolphy was a stunning flute player). Not the most important Dolphy date in anybody's collection, but a real honest curiosity, in a good way.
  10. Any more faves?? And remember, STUDIO DATES ONLY, and NO Blue Note dates (at least none originally recorded for and by Blue Note).
  11. So, does anybody else here have any of Karen's leader dates? Come on, fess up.
  12. I've always wondered about Gil's arranging for Thornhill, but have never had a clue where to start. Am I right in assuming this would be the best (perhaps the very best) place to start??
  13. A few that come to mind (all from Dusty, with their prices -- and I think their prices are usually better than most, at least on this kind of stuff)... <<< John Betsch Society -- Earth Blossom ... CD Strata East/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1974. New Copy .... $18.99 -- such a cool date, really exceeded my expectations going in (which were decently high to begin with). <<< Eddie Henderson -- Eddie Henderson Anthology Vol 2 -- The Capricorn Years: Realization/Inside Out ... CD Soul Brother (UK), 1973. New Copy .... $18.99 -- worth every penny, and I wouldn't have flinched if I'd had to pay even $10 more. Hell, in retrospect, I probably would've paid $40 for this date on CD, as much as I love it. One of my top-10 all-time favorite 70's jazz CD's. <<< Marcus Belgrave -- Gemini ... CD Universal Sound (UK), 1974. New Copy .... $18.99 -- a really short date (36 or 37 minutes, as I recall), but really sweet. When it was all said and done, I did NOT mind the price. (And I was fully prepaired to really start bitchin' when I saw it clock up that short -- like $2 per minute -- like $0.50 per minute, sheesh!) <<< Mombasa -- African Rhythms & Blues ... CD ~~and~~ Mombasa -- African Rhythms & Blues 2 ... CD Spiegelei/Sonorama (Germany), 1975 and 1976. New Copy .... $18.99 each -- Sweet Jesus, are these dates cool. The first one is kinda short (36-ish minutes), and the second one longer (like 44), but man -- they BOTH totally kick ass like nothing I've heard in ages. The 2nd one is even better than the first (grooves harder, with more brass soloing, and more true funk/afro/jazz tunes), and the 2nd one also seems to be easier to get these days -- so feel free to start there, really. How about you?? What EXPENSIVE discs (expensive at retail, so I'm NOT talkin' inflated OOP prices) have really been worth the expense.
  14. And in Kansas City, it's either my jazz series ("Jazz & Beyond" - at a great, centrally located Unitarian church) -- or else the Blue Room, or maybe Jardine's. I'm almost positive I can pay you guys better than any club in town (unless you've got a promoter that can work wonders), and I can also get you free room and probably some board too. The Rooster house is a perpetual disaster, but there are other church folks who I'm SURE I could get to put you up. Interesting people too -- people you can hang with, who I promise won't creep you out. You can cuss and drink around Unitarians, most of us don't mind a bit. Hell, most of us cuss and drink just like everybody else.
  15. Actually, since I've been scouting talent for the jazz series I've been producing the last couple years -- I've actually been seeing more young(er)-ish performers in clubs (most under the age of 35) than I have in years. There's a whole new generation coming up, and scrapin' for gigs. Maybe they've always been out there -- but in the last few years I've seen WAY more working musicians under the age of 30 than I ever remember seeing when I first moved here to KC in the mid 90's. I know, cuz I always used to be younger than practically all the players in town I saw and knew. I turn 40 next year, and now I'm OLDER than most of the players I've been seeing (granted, I'm scouting for new talent, plus my more progressive tastes -- that skews the sample I'm seeing greatly).
  16. Can I call MC, and have him play it over the phone for me?? I mean, this is the end of the world we're talkin' about here. I'm sure he'll understand, he'd have to!!
  17. Here's another push. If you ever get it, you won't regret it, I promise.
  18. Was a little on the fence about this one, but this thread has given me the push to get it next time I do an order. Based on Jim's fine description up above, I suspect NEW WORLD may well be a close cousin of the following... John Betsch Society -- Earth Blossom (Strata East, 1974) Any opinions of the John Betsch date, Jim?? (or anybody??) I really like it quite a lot. Like the Chambers, there's no earth-shattering soloists here either, but I think that's secondary to the aim of the music. And 75% of the rest of your description of the Chambers fits this date too (to my ears). FYI, the Betsch date is available on CD from Dusty, FWIW. A little pricy at $19, but I didn't mind a bit when the music turned out to be as good as it was.
  19. Yeah. I still haven't heard that unreleased Tyrone Washington BN session -- the one with Herbie and Jack DeJohnette. Fuck!!
  20. Forwarded the original post to my wife (who grew up in Kansas City, KS). She's a MUCH bigger sports fan than I am (she lives for Kansas Jayhawk basketball, and she loves college football too). I asked about her high school (which was in a semi-rural area, on the edge of the greater Kansas City metro), and she said...
  21. Yeah, but will you throw in the car if I buy the Dex RVG's?? No, but you'll get an etc. How many miles on the etc.?
