  1. My god, what a line-up!! Would have given my right arm to have heard this. Damn near half the people I like the very most from the 70's were in this band.
  2. I have about 7 of his CD's (not quite 10), but I would have nearly said the exact same thing. I think Sultan's Picnic and Blue Camel are the two best, among many quite strong offerings. IMHO, he's one of the best 'synthesizers' of jazz and a particular 'word music' tradition -- of any I've yet heard. Sangry?? Chuck?? You guys dig any of this guy? Anybody else??
  3. Only works on albums available through iTunes. http://www.thejosher.net/iTunes/ Examples found (I'm hoping I can link to these images - if not, somebody let me know if you can't see them)...
  4. Hell yeah!! FYI, back in January the church handbell choir I direct played a homemade arrangement of the Depeche Mode tune "Enjoy The Silence" (along with Paul Simon's "The Sound of Silence"), during a service about meditation, quietude, and inner peace. We performed that Depeche Mode tune (on bells) without one hint of irony, or snark, and it was beautiful. Afterwards, two church members who were well old enough to not have even the slightest idea who Depeche Mode was, each came up to say how much they "really liked that first tune" - and one was even surprised to learn that the piece wasn't composed specifically for bells in the first place. FYI, our handbell choir will be performing two or three Radiohead tunes, based on the lush and complex solo-piano arrangements of Christopher O'Riley, hopefully by sometime this Spring ('08). And I guarantee they will be a thing a beauty.
  5. And while I like both, I like the earlier bonus material with Ponder even more than the session that was released. I think Ponder especially, adds a hell of a lot to the date -- and being the only guitar player to grace an Andrew Hill album (at least with Hill as the leader), the session is really a special one in my book. (Doesn't hurt that it has Woody Shaw and Frank Mitchell on it either.) If all you have is the vinyl of Grass Roots, you really should grab a cheap copy of the CD sometime, if ever you have the chance. ESPECIALLY if Grass Roots is your favorite Hill date -- you'll get earlier "prototype" versions of three of the tunes found on the later (released) session, plus two similarly styled tunes that are otherwise unreleased (best as I can remember).
  6. PS: I might also mention this quote (from and by me) from a recent e-mail exchange... Yep, he's THAT good. Here's his bio, from his web-site...
  7. Just a friendly invite for all the Kansas City locals (and anybody passing through Kansas City in mid-November), since I was just about to send this release out to the local jazz rag. This will be the 6th(!) concert that I've produced since January of this year, on my relatively by now "relatively new" Jazz & Beyond concert series. A couple folks here on the board have been to a number of the concerts (one even having been the headliner on one!), so I'll let them comment on what they think of the series so far -- the music, and the venue (the hippest Unitarian Universalist church in KC). I'll just say that I think this series has the real potential to be one of the more exciting things to hit the local jazz scene in Kansas City in some time. (Or maybe it already is.)
  8. How many members of a particular demographic group does it take to perform a specified task? A finite number: one to perform the task, and an additional number to act in a manner stereotypical of the group in question.
  9. waiting and pinning all my hopes on Music 2.0
  10. If they want prices to go down, just reduce demand. If everybody in the entire country only ate HALF as much pasta as they did before (a 50% reduction in demand), suddenly the laws of supply and demand would take care of everything. Or even if just half of the entire country ate half as much (only a 25% reduction in demand), the same effect would happen -- though only to a lesser degree, or it would take longer for the effect to be felt. Problem solved. Do these people not understand day #1 of basic Econ 101??
  11. Anybody have a list of the domestic (U.S.) RVG series on CD, in (re)release order??? I don't need the entire list (though the entire list would be helpful) -- just the first 4 or 5 years worth would be good. I'm especially needing the first few years of the series, at the very least. Thanks!!
  12. Yet another vote for Black Fire (Black Fire is the first Hill disc I almost always suggest to people, even over Point of Departure), and my second choice for someone relatively new to Hill would be Passing Ships.
  13. No idea if this is correct, but FYI, the most recent comment posted to the Youtube clip says... Grain of salt, and all that. Cool clip!!!
  14. Just saw this one (for the first time), and thought of starting this thread... (source)
  15. OK, I checked autotrader.com, and I think I hit pay-dirt. Quite a few specific cars in the St. Louis area, at dealers, that all appear to be program cars. I just gave my dad info on three specific cars that were priced a bit less than the one he was looking at, less than 25 miles from his front door. And I found the actual car he was looking at too, on autotrader.com -- so I'm getting the idea that Autotrader is a halfway comprehensive search. I think I've at least got a handle on getting him some decent info to work with (where I felt like I was grabbing at straws last last night). PS: Talked to my Dad just now, and now he's also considering getting a Chevy Malibu, instead of the LaCrosse. (In other words, he doesn't know what he wants yet.)
  16. Yikes!! Out of nowhere, my Dad suddenly calls late last night and he's looking REALLY seriously at buying a 'new' 2007 Buick LaCrosse 'program car' (a specific car he's looked at, and had only cursory discussions with a salesman about (at the random Buick dealership that happens to be closest to where he lives) -- to replace his aging but well maintained '92 Olds Cutlass Supreme. (Of course, being 80 years old, he wants to by a new (or new-ish) car that's EXACTLY like what he has now. And that means I'll be hearing about ALL the things that aren't EXACTLY the same as what he has now -- for at least the next year.) Also, relevant to this situation, my Mom passed away about 5 years ago -- and this is THE first really BIG purchasing decision my Dad has had to make without my Mom around to hash it over with. He doesn't know for sure (yet) what package (sub-model) of the LaCrosse is that he's looking at, but it appears to probably be the lowest option, a "CX" (or possibly, but less likely, a "CXS" - which is only a touch "nicer" than a "CX"). The specific program car he's looking at has 11,000 miles on it, and they're asking $20,000 for it (plus taxes, and who knows what other hidden costs) to drive it off the lot. Best as I can tell (looking on-line, at Edmunds.com), the original MSRP for an '07 LaCrosse is about $22,500 -- but given that the '08 models are just arriving, I'm thinking that a discount of only $2,500 on a program car with 11K miles on it is at least $1,000 to maybe $2,000 more than it's really worth. (I'm thinking they ought to let it go for $18K, not $20K.) Is there any other kind of DOMESTIC mid-size car my 80-year-old Dad should be looking at?? It has to be American made; he'd sooner walk the plank than buy a foreign car. I tried a couple on-line sites quickly last night (carmax.com, enterprise leasing autosales, and ebay motors), but am at a loss for other reputable on-line resources to check for pricing info. (Oh, just remembered autotrader.com, which I didn't check last night -- but will check soon.) My Dad appears to be dead-set on buying a "program car". Not a 'used' car (from an owner), but something that only a dealer drove around for a year or two as a "company car" -- or a car that's exiting some car-rental program, like Enterprise, or Hertz, Avis, etc... I think he wants a program car so he can get all of the warranty he would get buying brand new. How do I find resources specifically for "program cars" available in the St. Louis area?? I'm doing all this remotely from Kansas City. Suggestions of useful auto-related forums could be helpful. I know there are a bunch out there probably (I've done some lurking on a Prius forum since we bought our new Prius in '06). Much thanks in advance for any advice anyone has.
  17. I initially read the title of this thread as... Miles Davis - Monterey 1968 CD - it's a Wally Heider Recording! ...and about had a heart attack (with excitement), only to come crashing back to earth seconds later after I clicked on the thread. (Better than a shot of espresso for the adrenaline, I will say that! )
  18. Question: "Recent polls have shown that one-fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?" Answer: "I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because … some people out there in our nation don't have maps and … I believe that our … education like such as in South Africa, and … the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should … our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., or should help South Africa, it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for our children." Pure poetry!!
  19. various variations on... "Maybe you could drive better with that cell phone stuffed up your ass"
