  1. Shit. Too much doing, and not enough thinking about doing.
  2. Wow, great complete reworking of this tune. Very nice!! Hey ya cover Anyone concur??
  3. I was thinking about bringing this thread up again to talk about thinking about it. But I think I'll just think about bringing it up later, you know, to think about talking about it some other time. Something to think about, maybe? Or maybe just think about thinking about.
  4. I'm sure FFA probably ought to be offended slightly by the confusion... ...but I'll take this as a compliment!!
  5. Oh, I know Miles' had been chasing Wayne -- since long before Sam was ever even in the group. (The stuff of lore.) I'm just wondering if some of what happened when Wayne finally came into the group, wasn't somehow influenced or informed by what Sam did with Miles in his very short stint. You know, gave Miles an idea of what was possible/probable -- particularly in terms of what Herbie and Tony would/could do - if they were given even the slightest licence to do so (which Sam did). I'm not saying Miles didn't know his own band. But knowing and hearing (on stage in performance, no less) are two slightly different things. The difference between knowing, and really knowing -- if you catch my drift. Maybe everything would have happened exactly the same way if the jump had been straight from George to Wayne. I'm guessing the progression of the group (into E.S.P. territory) happened a bit faster because of Sam. Just a hunch, with no way to back it up.
  6. Did Sam prime the pump for Wayne to step in?? In other words, would Wayne have been as well received (by Miles), if Wayne had immediately followed George?? Been ages since I've heard Miles in Berlin (with Wayne) -- any clues there?? (I really need to break down and get the Seven Steps box -- the last of the Miles boxes I have yet to purchase.) What are people's opinions about Miles in Berlin?? And I know there are some other '64 dates with Wayne floating about -- what of some of them?? Sangry -- what's your take on what Wayne did with Miles really early on (live), pre-ESP.
  7. Seems like the earliest I could hope to book a out-of-town band would be after I get at least two or three concerts with local groups under my belt. But Jim, Joe and Randy -- do please let me know if you think you'll be passing through or near Kansas City anytime in the next year or two. Fortunately, with two or three months notice, I've got a fair bit of flexibility around when I can book the church for concerts. Anything inside of 2 months, and the space and calendar starts filling up very fast.
  8. Not sure if this was it, or not, but this was interesting... (official Youtube video, uploaded by CBS) Another video worth a view... MSNBC segment on Ed Bradley
  9. The Who cover Heatwave, german broadcast in 1966. Cool!
  10. This is the only version I knew, before I stumbled on the link above from '66. Who do Barbara Ann <-- sometime in the mid 70's. Was VERY surprised to find the '66 footage for the first time earlier tonight. I had no idea this was a tune they had covered way back in the day.
  11. jefferson_starbucks.mp3 <-- click (come on, you know you want to )
  12. I got 80.6% too. Was hoping I'd do better. Thought I'd at least get 85% or so.
  13. UPDATE, early November 2006. I am in the process of booking the first two concerts for early in 2007 (first one to occur in late January, probably). Recently got the go-ahead from the church fund-raising committee and church board to start the series, and it's all a done deal - 'cept for the actual doin'. I'm looking at 4 to 6 concerts per year, probably most likely 5 per year (given everything that's already on our church calendar), ideally something like this... 2 concerts in the late Winter and/or Spring (i.e. sometime between Jan. 1st and mid May). 2 more concerts in the Summer, sometime in June, July and August (June and July the more likely of the two Summer months). And one or possibly two more concerts sometime in Sept., Oct., and November. (Our existing "Classical" concert series is quite heavy on the programming in the Fall each year, so I'm thinking I'll only get in one Fall concert between all they're already doing.) Much to my amazement, this is really about to happen!! (Well, just as soon as I can make it happen. ) But this really is within my grasp, and soon (this January!!). Longer term, in a perfect world, I'd book one "out of town" act per year (Organissimo, I'm looking right at YOU ), and that might also include the possibility of getting a feature artist (one guest artist) to play with a local pick-up rhythm-section backing them. I've got about 10 or 12 local groups in mind as far as bookings (mostly made up of guys (or at least leaders) that I've known for quite a number of years), enough to book the first two years worth of concerts just from people I already know. Thinking of calling the series "Jazz and Beyond". Feedback on that choice is certainly welcome (as it's not cast in stone just yet).
  14. Great music, but not "life-changing"-ly so (IMHO), if you catch my drift. In the spirit of not setting one's expectations too high -- I think this material is nearly as good as any of Byrd's other 50's or early 60's dates, but not especially better than other similar Byrd recordings of the same era. That said, Chuck's right -- get it. (I did.)
  15. And don't overlook his "classical" material. THE YELLOW SHARK is probably the place to start there, although CIVILIZATION PHASE III is probably his magnum opus. There is a one-disc overview of his more serious "classical" material, but I've not ever heard it (though I have all of it spread across the original releases). Looking over the track listing, it looks pretty decent. Might well be worth picking it if you can find one cheap... Strictly Genteel: A Classical Introduction to Frank Zappa
  16. All three of the '88 live band releases are VERY much worth picking up. Many consider that band to be one of his very best (count me in that camp). The first has already been mentioned (Jazz Noise), but I'll mention all three... Broadway The Hard Way The Best Band You Never Heard Make A Jazz Noise Here In truth, it might be simpler to pick 10 or 15 Zappa albums to avoid, rather than trying to pick his top 10 to own. By that I mean that there are wonderful things on most every release in his catalog. There is a bunch that is "less than wonderful" too (but still usually interesting, at worst). I own probably 50 or maybe 60 discs of Zappa material, and there are two or three tracks on every one of them that are favorites. That said, there plenty of tracks I skip too, if I can reach for the remote easily. I could probably say that about half his catalog.
  17. Pretty good performance (cover) of a pretty good song.
  18. The Bastards say "Peace Treaty" is due on CD in January. Can't wait!! More Woody Shaw!!
  19. Can't be any worse than this... click
  20. On the other hand, it could just be that there is some other non-electronic way to register a write-in vote. In other words, there may well be a procedure in place to handle write-ins, just not through the electronic voting system. I mention this because I think the only way you can register a write-in vote here in MO (well, here in KC anyway), is if you pick the optical-scan method of voting. The method in your city may be different.
