Favorite Blaxploitation Soundtracks
Rooster_Ties replied to undergroundagent's topic in Recommendations
Any merit to this recording?? - which I see The Bastards™ sometimes have in stock (though quite expensively -- so my obvious follow-up will be: is this really worth $25??). Young-Holt Unlimited -- Young-Holt Unlimited Plays Super Fly . . . CD . . . $24.99 (Item: 42801) P-Vine (Japan), 1973 Condition: New Copy View Cart Fantastic! Young and Holt lay down a monster set of grooves from Curtis Mayfield's Superfly soundtrack (all the good ones -- like "Freddie's Dead", "Give Me Your Love", "Pusher Man", and "Superfly"), and they also get into some funky tracks of their own (like "Hey Pancho" and "Mystical Man"), and do a super-dope cover of "People Make the World Go Round". The album's nice and stripped down -- perhaps closest to their Oh Girl LP on Atlantic in feel, with loads of cool electric piano by Ken Chaney, laid out over the group's harder funky grooves! One of their rarest in the original, too -- and an essential bit of early G-funk! (From the Soul/Funk CD (T-Z and Various) page.) Edit: FYI, as far as I know, I've never heard any Young-Host Unlimited before, so I supposed need to get me edumacated about them as well, in general. (Off to the AMG I go... ...where (edit again) I just discovered on-line samples of the entire album -- thanks AMG!!!) -
FWIW, I think Ponder's playing on the extra "Grass Roots" session, and "That Certain Feeling" (which I only heard for the first time less than a year ago), are tops among my all-time favorite 60's recordings with guitar.

what's the 411 on this live Tolliver LP on enja from 1972??
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
And I see from that back cover that the bonus material (all by itself) is well over 20 minutes long (close to 25 minutes actually, but then some of that is applause and such). Having had the vinyl of this date for the last 6 months or so, I can say that it is ever bit as good any anything to be found on the Tolliver Select. -
what's the 411 on this live Tolliver LP on enja from 1972??

I see from the Dusty Groove description that there's BONUS material!! (which I had a hunch there'd be). Charles Tolliver -- Impact (Enja) (plus bonus tracks) . . . CD . . . $11.99 List Price: $14.99 (Item: 435096) Enja (Germany), 1972 Condition: New Copy View Cart Don't confuse this one with Charles Tolliver's album on Strata East of the same name -- because this session's a completely different one for Enja, but equally great! The group here is a quartet -- not Tolliver's usual Music Inc lineup, but a combo that features Alvin Queen on drums, Ron Mathewson on bass, and regular partner Stanley Cowell on piano -- all hitting a groove that's a bit different than the Tolliver sound of Strata East, and sometimes a bit more filled with energy! The date is a live one, and there's a nice roughness here -- not to the recording quality, but more to the rhythms, which feel a bit chunkier than Tolliver's usual groove, and seem to push the flowing sound of his trumpet and Cowell's piano perhaps a bit more. Titles include "Brilliant Circles", "Impact", "Truth", and "Prayer For Peace". CD also features 2 previously unreleased numbers -- "Abscretions" and "Our Second Father". (From the Jazz CD (T-Z and Various) page.) -
Yikes! - a coma. I will certainly keep the man in my thoughts.

I always thought this was a pretty silly one ..... Creepy as hell, is more like it.

OK, lots of reasons for amplified bass in live situations - I'll grant everyone that. But on studio recordings, I just doesn't get it. A good example - one of the first studio recordings I've ever owned with amplified bass on it: McCoy Tyner's "New York Reunion" (Tyner, Henderson, Carter, Foster - Chesky, 1991). Ron Carter's amplified bass, ultimately, drives me up a wall -- both here, and nearly everywhere else (which is like nearly every recording Carter's done in the last 30 years, right?) Couple odd but perhaps noteworthy exceptions, though. I have actually grown to really like Carter's amplified bass on those several late 70's Hancock/Carter/Williams trio dates, especially this one (just called "The Herbie Hancock Trio", from July 1977). For some strange reason, Carter's amplified bass seems to fit right in, here, in this particular context -- though I still usually hate it elsewhere.

Put on John Patton's "Boogaloo" right now

My favorite BJP date as well. Will spin it shortly, with pleasure!! -
Last year's similar thread (FWIW)... 2006 annual wish-list for Conns (or maybe Waters?), vote early and often, and let's send MC the results...

Which side of Radiohead's OK Computer is better?
Rooster_Ties replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous Music
While I can hear some very minor similarities between Pink Floyd and Radiohead, I think they're far more different than they are similar. -
This has been discussed before (I forget the details), and I think I remember that these two albums clock in at something like 81 minutes (maybe closer to 82). 80 minutes no longer appears to be the absolute upper limit for CD lengths, so perhaps these two can fit on one CD. But this is still somewhat an open question, I believe.

After "Natural Essence" with hopefully most of "The Trainwreck" as bonus tracks (oh please, oh please, oh PLEASE!!!), my other priorities would include... Both of the Kenny Cox dates (either a two-fer, or edit one of the tracks slightly -- and release both albums on on CD. Yeah, some will cry foul at any editing -- but I'd rather miss out on 60-90 seconds and get both dates issued on disc, than just release one of the dates -- only to have the other one never happen. Or, again, a two-fer.) Larry Young's "Contrasts" (love the cover!! ) The Hill date with Sam Rivers would be nice too ("Change"). And by the way, to correct the original post -- isn't "Compulsion!!!" coming out as an RVG?? - and not as a Conn. (Pretty sure that's what I read in the "Compulsion" thread.) If so, FYI.

When will the next RVG and Conn batches be announced?
Rooster_Ties replied to Kyo's topic in Re-issues
Have the next round of Conns been decided yet?? (or "mostly" decided??) Sure, I'd love to know what they are -- but my question is literal -- have they already mostly been decided yet?? (yes, no, or mostly??) I ask because I'm wanting to do a letter-writing campaign to get "The Trainwreck" sessions released (or mostly released, at least), as bonus tracks on TW's "Natural Essence". Any chance if anyone could reveal if "Natural Essence" is at least being considered for the next round of Conns?? (And if so, are is "The Trainwreck" being considered??) Also, what month are the next round of Conns targeted for?? -
Wow, Benny Bailey!!! Any idea what year this might be from??

I wish this guy would sell copies of this disc at his gigs (or at least dates he's leading). I've heard him live a bunch of times (dates he's lead), and would have long had my own copy by now, for sure, if given the chance. Heck, I'd even pay full ride - $15. (And you know he's got a box of them in a closet or in the basement.) What gives?

Smokestack is the Hill BN date I've never quite jelled with yet.
-
Anal Log?? Meh -- probably sounds like crap.

Which side of Radiohead's OK Computer is better?
Rooster_Ties replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Picked this up yesterday on my lunch hour, have spun it nearly three times since then (and it's spinning a fourth time as I'm typing this), and I can report that this disc is nothing short of fantastic. Obviously a labor of love, and nearly as intricate as the original -- with LOTS of subtleties in the arrangements that play homage to the original. And best of all, almost none of it seems campy or cheezy. A very heartfelt project, extremely well done. (Did I mention how much I like it?? ) Seriously, all kidding aside, anyone who has and likes OK Computer really should consider getting this new version as well. -

Haven't voted yet, cuz I want to listen to the album again first before I do. But I'll go ahead and mention that about 80% of the time I hear this album - I truely think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. But oddly enough, the other 20% of the time - I can't figure out why I love of so much the other 80% of the time. -
Just today stopped at the HPB about 4 blocks from my house. Here's what I found and bought... Ingrid Jensen / Project O - "Now As Then" $5.98 Ingrid Jenson (tp), Gary Versace (b3), Jon Wikan (d) - (plus a few other guests on a couple cuts) Ed Blackwell Trio - "Walls-Bridges" (Black Saint) $7.98 Ed Blackwell, Dewey Redman, and Cameron Brown (ba) Saw about 8 or 10 used BN McMasters (and not all of them titles I see all the time), most $6 or $7 each, plus some Atlantics, some Impluses. Nothing spectacular, but not all that shabby either -- and probably better than any other used place in town. Plenty I might have bought a few years ago. We'll worth a visit, twice a month usually.
