  1. It's not the vocals, per se. It's true, I don't like vocals in jazz (and I really don't like traditional vocal jazz, that's for damn sure). But I really LOVE plenty of jazz albums from the 70's (and really late 60's) that do happen to have vocals ("Lift Every Voice", "Now", "Black Renaissance", Doug Carn’s Black Jazz dates with Jean Carn – I love all that stuff) It's just that Tyrone's singing is just SO bad. I mean, I get weirder looks from my wife when I have "Do Right" on, than I would from "Free Jazz" or "Ascension" - or any Sun Ra. (Not that weird looks from my wife is the arbiter of my taste. )
  2. Jim, was Stadler involved in any way with "Do Right"? I forget. I should know this stuff. It's "Roots" that's on Perception, and "Do Right" on Blue Labor. And I guess maybe Blue Labor was Stadler's thing (now that I'm thinking about it). But either way, if there's any chance for "Roots" coming out on CD (now THERE's a MF'n Tyrone Washington date that NEEDS to be available), then I probably ought to buy "Do Right".
  3. I'm spinning "Do Right" right now, and Jesus -- Tyrone Washington makes Phil Ranelin sound like a REALLY GREAT singer. So then, those of you who have this album can at least understand what I'm talking about.
  4. OK, so I'm gonna put in an order from The Bastards™ soon (this week probably), and they've got the Tyrone "Do Right" disc in stock. But the damn thing is $25 (ouch!!). The question is -- do I want this thing bad enough to pay $25 for it?? No, I don't. But will I be kicking myself years later if I don't move on it now, when I had the chance?? (and just how many different verb tenses can I use in the same sentence?? ) This isn't just a matter of not wanting to pay $25 for something that I only kinda like. Like I mentioned in a post up above, I'm REALLY conflicted about this date. And if I really liked half the tunes, and really disliked the other half -- it'd be a MUCH easier call. I'd probably buy it. But I seriously like and/or love some aspects of most of the tunes, while at the very same time I REALLY dislike and/or hate some other aspects of the very same tunes!!! Sangry, are you the only guy here (besides me), who's ever heard this date?? If nothing else, Jim, what would you do?? No, I don't really have the spare bread to buy it -- but then again, I've never let that stop me before. Jim - do you understand my conflict?? Do you feel my pain?? I think you're the only one here who can really sympathize with me on this one (since you've heard the date). If you (Jim) didn't already own this on LP (but did have a burn of it), would you shell out $25 for a legit one on CD?? I figure you're pretty much like me -- even if it's expensive, if you want and/or need it -- you'll pay the piper. It's that I dislike just having burns of things, when I can own a legit CD copy (especially when it's somebody I really love, like Tyrone Washington -- or at least everything else he ever recorded). Edit: I've got my burn of this one on right now, and I swear -- every damn time I hear it, I go back and forth between loving it and hating it (usually several times each tune ).
  5. Is there any hope for Brilliant Circles?? Or is the original recording that bad to begin with? Without a doubt, THE best "worst sounding ever!!" studio recording that I've ever heard.
  6. Over the past several years, I almost always cite Infinity as my all-time-favorite Lee Morgan leader date. Burns like a MF, top to bottom. Jackie's a BIG part of the reason why. Lee Morgan - Infinity (Blue Note LT 1091) Lee Morgan (tp) Jackie McLean (as) Larry Willis (p) Reggie Workman (b) Billy Higgins (d) Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, November 16, 1965 1682 tk.1 Infinity 1683 tk.5 Growing Pains 1684 tk.17 Miss Nettie B. 1685 tk.25 Portrait of Doll (aka My Lady) 1686 tk.26 Zip Code
  7. Yikes!!
  8. Having read the news late, late last night -- I pulled this out to listen to while getting ready for work this morning... All ballads and mid-tempo tunes, it just seemed like the kind of disc to play on such an occasion - a bit more somber. One of my very first Mosaic purchases was the Jackie Mclean set, though ironically it was really more for all the sidemen, actually. I didn't know very much of Jackie's music at the time, and was just dipping my toe in the Mosaic pond. Wasn't brave enough to invest in many 6 and 7 disc sets, so the 4-disc Mclean set seemed like an easier step to take at the time. RIP, dear Jackie. RIP.
  9. That's been my experience too. Yes, sometimes as little as 10 seconds. And to be completely serious, often it only takes 30, 20, or even as little 15 seconds to tell if something is gonna be REALLY great. This is true of most of the obscure stuff I'm often looking for and discover from that '65-'75 period in jazz that I love so much. And it's also often true (for me, at least) with classical recordings of 20th Century works. Some of THE best things I've discovered have totally "clicked" with me in 20 seconds or less -- and yes, sometimes as little as 10 seconds -- often by composers I'd never heard of, or were largely unfamiliar with at the time.
  10. Can anybody provide the session details for the unreleased material?? Players, date(s), and tunes. Thanks!! Edit: Don't see a "Fine and Mellow" on the disc that Jim linked to. Is that the right song title? Or is the link to the right disc/release? (That was what prompted my query above about the sessions details -- I wanted to sample the three tunes from the CDU site, and couldn't tell which three were the ones with Amy and Bolton.)
  11. What I think is amazing, and wonderful, is that Hill must be generating enough sales to merit the reissue (date by date) of his entire catalog on individual CD's, despite the fact that the Mosaic is already out there in the marketplace. Cuz if he wasn't selling -- we sure wouldn't be getting this many Hill titles (RVG's, Conns, the Select), this fast (in just a very few short years), that's for sure. So he must be selling at least "pretty OK".
  12. I've never heard any of that Evans material, so I'll be snapping that one up for sure. I've got the McLean and Hill dates on their respective Mosaics, but I'll eventually buy Conns of both of them - just cuz they're such great dates. The McLean especially is some PRIME 60's Tolliver, for sure!! And how can I say no to the Hill. That's three of six I'll get for sure (sooner or later). Like many here, I don't know a thing about Lou Blackburn. Don't even recognize the name, not even slightly.
  13. Oh, oh, I can play that game... I've been "professional" Symphony Chorus singer (baritone) for 10 or 11 years, but I've NEVER sung any more of Handel's "Messiah" than just the Hallelujah Chorus!! This is no small feat either, as I've had probably 12 to 14 "expected" opportunities to sing The Messiah over the years. And if you just count ALL the "opportunities" I've had to sing this war horse (including attempts to recruit me to sing it with this community chorus, or that church choir, or various annual Messiah "sing-alongs"), the number is probably much closer to 30(!). But after 10+ years of professional choral singing, it's getting harder and harder to avoid. I'm on a yearlong sabbatical currently from the KC Symphony Chorus, but I'm hoping to return to the group next year, mid-season --- conveniently after the annual Messiah performances that we do every year around Thanksgiving. (Most years I have to be out of town for Thanksgiving, with family commitments --- yeah, that’s right, "family commitments" .)
  14. Two cats in our household. The dominant one (Emily) is about 7 or 8 years old, and she means business - and rules by fear (rules over the other cat, not over us!). But she loves a good scratch behind the ears, is a great lap-cat, and is a glutton at the food bowl (and it shows). The two cats don't fight in any real serious way (we never hear hissing), but they're not the best of buddies either. Pepper is the younger one (at about 5 years old), and she must have been the runt of her litter, since she doesn't look a day over 8 months old (in terms of her size) -- and she acts just like an "older kitten / young adult cat" to this very day. She loves to play, and has boundless energy. She LOVES to help make beds, and fold laundry (usually on the bed in the main bedroom), and she never misses a chance to explore down in the basement (which is normally closed off, expect when I need to run down there to do laundry). Although I do like well-behaved dogs (though I've never owned a dog - and probably never wil), I really love cats - and have always felt a special bond with most that I encounter. People tell me that I can charm even the most anti-social of felines. EDIT: Oh, I thought of one trick that Pepper has been doing recently. My wife and I usually sit in bed to watch the news on TV, or (more likely), The Daily Show, etc... Pepper has decided she sometimes wants to get under the covers with me or us. I'll hold the sheet and bedspread up, and she crawls in and curls up in a ball next to me. She usually only stays under the covers for about 10 or 15 minutes, but it's just the cutest. Pepper's really a sweetheart of a kitty.
  15. Benny Bailey (with Lional Hampton)
  16. Woody Shaw (and Freddie Hubbard) - Japan, 1986
  17. Miles Davis Quintet 1964 "So What" (with Wayne, in 1964!!) I've seen a lot of Miles clips and footage over the years, but this one was sure new to me.
  18. There's some feedback floating around (first seen on an AAJ thread) about the unreleased Tyrone date --- from someone who's a friend of MC, who got to hear a small handful of unreleased sessions (right off the master tapes, so to speak). As far as I know, this date has not "gotten out".
  19. Having just recently gotten the Patton Select, there were three sessions there that were totally new to me (I think they where the last of his BN leader dates that I didn't already have). One of these I would rank right up there with the VERY best of his work... THAT CERTAIN FEELING totally kicks ass. The date is split across discs #2 and #3 on the Select, so I burned it all to one disc for listening in the car and such. DAMN, couldn't get that thing out of my car player for nearly a week. Jimmy Ponder is truely amazing on this date. Between this, and the alternate "warm up" date for Andrew Hill's GRASS ROOTS -- I really wish that Ponder had recorded in more "challenging" contexts in the late 60's (like he did with Patton and Hill). Wouldn't Ponder have been GREAT on a late 60's Larry Young date?? Or here's a crazy idea -- how about a Wayne Shorter album with just guitar (Ponder!), bass, and drums (no piano) -- sometime in about 1965-67. Coulda been interesting.
  20. And much to my great suprise, when you hit <cr> after typing in the search key (artist name, for instance), the <cr> triggers a new window to open with the search results.
  21. Bravo!! Thanks a TON for this (getting a new window when you click on the search thingy). I figured that search button was some sort of canned wigit from CDU, and as such - probably untweakable. You da man!!
  22. Just wanted to second this request. It'd be nice if the "search" button resulted in a new window opening up. (Certain not absolutely necessary, but nice.)
  23. Me and the Mrs. are headed up to Minneapolis/St. Paul around Memorial Day for about 5 to 7 days, and would love to hear some suggestions of stuff to do in the area (particularly in the city (or cities, rather) - since we're really urbanites at heart when we're on vacation). We've only been up there once before (about 10 years ago, barely a month after we first met!! ), and that was just for a 3-day weekend. I'm really hoping to catch somebody worthwhile at The Dakota, but their on-line jazz calendars only go out through the end of March (full calendar), and the end of April (national acts). I recently asked a friend originally from that area to recommend some stuff. And knowing my interests (regional history, architecture, museums and such), she replied with this e-mail below. I'll post it here in full, just to get the ball rolling...
