What is your favorite brand of hotdog/frank??
Rooster_Ties replied to wolff's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Best chili-dogs ever... Coney Island, Galesburg Illinois YUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
I just stumbled across a couple piano trio dates (standard piano/bass/drums config) that I wasn't previously even aware of --- probably because they weren't lead by the piano player. So, it probably stands to reason that there are other similar recordings out there that I'm simply overlooking. The two I just found out about... Robert Hurst w/ Kenny Kirkland and Elvin Jones - "One for Namesake" (Columbia, 1993) Tony Williams w/ Mulgrew Miller and Ira Coleman - "Young at Heart" (Columbia, 1996) And another one two I just learned about, but haven't heard (yet)... Roy Haynes w/ Phineas Newborn and Paul Chambers - We Three (OJC, 1958) Roy Haynes w/ Danilo Perez and John Patitucci - "The Roy Haynes Trio" (Verve, 1999) So what else is worth mentioning??

I thought it was "alt - print screen" you had to press, to do a screen capture. (Haven't done one in years, but I think that was the sequence -- far as I remember.) -
Your 5 favorite JAZZ purchaces on CD in 2004.

OK, here's my first pick (more on the way, probably tonight)... Ted Curson - "Pop Wine" (Futura, 1971). (Got it at Dusty Groove, about the only place I've ever seen it.) Curson plays his ass off - sounding at times like Don Cherry, but with stronger -- or maybe I should say "more forceful" chops. He also reminds of of Miles at his 70's "balls"-iest best, at least in spirit (if not in full electric mode). This is THE best and most exciting Ted Curson I've yet heard -- though I'll admit I haven't heard as much by Curson as I'd like to (at least based on "Pop Wine"). The date is Curson backed by the Georges Arvanitas Trio (with no other horns). I wasn't familiar with Arvanitas until this recording, and from what I've read on-line, he's normally a more "inside"-sounding sort of player. But here, he sounds a bit like Mal Waldron (and occasionally like Mal Waldron on 'speed'). The band never goes quite "over the edge", but they butt right up to it quite nicely -- which is how I like it. 5-stars in my book. $15.99 at Dusty, and worth every damn penny. PS: Spontoonious got this the same time I did, and he told me back then (a couple months ago) that he thought the first tune -- which is the most "free" tune on the entire date -- that it sounded pretty unfocussed to him, and kind of 'off the mark'. (But he loved the rest of the disc, if I remember right.) I've listened to "Pop Wine" about four times in the last three days, and I kind of hear what he's talking about. But not the entire track (which is about 13 minutes long). IMHO, some of it goes off the rails, but some still sounds together -- at least to my ears. (And I think the first track has grown on me a bit too, with repeated spins.) -
Just finished the CD ("Kofi"). Damn fine one. Last cut is one of the best, but the whole thing cooks. Listening to "Electric Byrd" now. It's OK, but not as good as "Kofi". Up next, "Fancy Free".

Who can do Bush??? -
Funny stuff. You click on the AMG link, and it goes to this guy... Now that's a fuckup! So David Murray used to play tenor with Iron Maiden??? Wow, that guy really gets around!!!
-
OK, here's the AMG bio for Dimebag Darrell. Funny, they only have "Diamond Darrell" listed as a member of Pantera (no "Dimebag"). But they have "Dimebag Darrell" listed as a "see also" under "Diamond Darrell" . (And no bio for "Diamond", but here's the one listed under "Dimebag".)

OK, some quick Googling, and clearly the "Diamond" Darrell thing is just the AMG refusing to call him Dimebag. How famous and/or important is/was his father?? Bio from www.xtrememusician.com... Dimebag Darrell Born: August 20, 1966 Dallas, TX, USA Darrell Abbott is the son of country-western songwriter Jerry Abbott. Born in Dallas, Texas, Dime grew up with a lot of country influences in his life. He was always exposed to music and musical instruments, and he began playing the guitar at a very young age. He took lessons from country legends, and picked it up easily. He was considered a virtuoso at an early age, and by the time he was sixteen years old, he had already won all of the local talent competitions and band contests, and was no longer allowed to enter. Dime spent many years playing clubs and bars around Dallas before getting any national recognition, but nowadays he's known as a guitar hero. Fast and furious, Darrell has come into his own, and he has many more albums in him that will come out in the future.

Why do you want to know??
-
Diamond Darrell?? Never heard of the guy (hardly even know of Pantera, other than it's heavy metal of some sort). Was he really referred to in print (like in magazines) as Dimebag Darrell?? Get this -- the AMG says he was influenced by David Murray. ( Obviously a AMG fuck-up, wouldn't it have to be??) Influenced By David Murray Dave Mustaine Peter Willis Scott Ian Glenn Tipton K.K. Downing Adrian Smith Randy Rhoads Tony Iommi Jimmy Page Billy Gibbons Kirk Hammett Kerry King James Hetfield Eddie Van Halen Ace Frehley Greg Graffin Edit: Somebody want to remind me what a "dimebag" is?? Obviously drug lingo, I'm guessing something related to cocaine probably. (Which is why I'd be surprised he'd be called "dimebag" in print much.)

Was just listening to Kofi this morning, and thought I'd give this thread a bump. Pretty darn good album. Up above, Sangry mentioned Duke Pearson's fingerprints on this one, and my ears have to agree (even if I can'y clearly put in words why). Lovin' Frank Foster on tenor, in particular, in this kind of context.

Hey gang. How about telling everyone your 5 favorite jazz CD purchases over the last year (the discs you can't live without now ). Also, please write a sentence or three about each one, a sort of mini-review. And let's limit this to single CD's, or maybe double-CD issues --- NO BOX SETS, please. (I'd like to maintain an "album-centric" focus to this thread.) ALSO, this thread is NOT only limited to discs that were released (or reissued) only in 2004. Just what are the five most important jazz discs you bought in 2004 - even if they're OOP titles, or used stuff you found on eBay, or whatever. They can be stuff released on CD years ago, but they were new to your ears this year. (I'm working on my list, and will post it before the end of the day.)

Linguist Deciphers Uses of Word 'Dude'
Rooster_Ties replied to 7/4's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My wife calls all the new sports in the Winter Olympics "Dude sports". You know, the free-style snow-boarding, and other "Xtreme" sports. The sports where the participants all call each other "dude"!! Makes sense to me. -
"Comin' On" is my favorite Reece session (two sessions, actually). But everything on the Select is top-drawer in my book. I wish Reece had recorded more as a leader, on into the mid and late 60's. Also, it might have been interesting to hear him in the same transitional period (stylistically speaking) that Donald Byrd went through with "Fancy Free", "Kofi", and "Electric Byrd" (all from 1969 and 1970).

The head to B. Harper's "Capra Black" - crazy!!
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Musician's Forum
A friend of mine tells me he managed to scare up a lead-sheet for Capra Black, from some sort of Billy Harper fan club (the "official" one, I'm told), direct from the president of the fan club. (Who knew there even was an "official" Billy Harper fan club??) Haven't seen it yet, but I probably will sometime next week. -
One of my favorites too, by a long shot.
-
Details can be found HERE, including the full discography for these unreleased (or partially unreleased) sessions. (I just bumped the thread up too.)

Gonna be my first ever Mosaic pre-order. Let the countdown begin!!!
