OK, so I'm ichin' to get the new RVG's of "Black Fire" (street date was today), and "Action" (street date was a couple weeks ago) --- and I can't find them for shit in this town... OK, that isn't entirely fair - because I do see that a couple Borders have them (you can check their inventories, by store, from their web-site), but they're all located way out in the suburbs -- a good 15-minute drive from mid-town Kansas City (or 20-minutes in rush-hour traffic). Streetside Records in midtown didn't have any of the RVG's today, nor do they appear to have any of the RVG's from two weeks ago either. And Barnes and Noble didn't have any of today's RVG's either (but they did have the ones from two weeks ago), BUT -- they had them at full-list price, $12.99, which bites. (Borders (out in the 'burbs) has them at $11.99, which is more reasonable -- especially with some sort of coupon, 10%, 15%, or even 20% off.) Some more bitching about Barnes & Noble. They have a relatively deep jazz selection, sorta. But they also have a ton of jazz titles that I wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole. And worse yet, they only sell CD's at full list price. Just today I saw BN titles from 5-years ago (some of which are already cut-outs), that they had priced at $17.99 or even $18.99 a disc. WTF??? Sorry to be ranting, but it pisses me off when really mainstream titles like BN-reissues, are such a bitch to find on release day (or even two weeks after release day). Remember the trouble I had finding "Passing Ships" for like three days, when it came out last October?? There was a time, just two years ago, when BN titles were easy to find, everywhere (Streetside, Borders, B&N, etc...), and on release day too. I'm done ranting, for the moment...

Anybody have any fresh Borders coupons?? The last one expired yesterday (or at least the last one I knew about), just in time to NOT be available for use for the RVG's that just came out today. Thanks!!!! -- Rooster I'm ichin' for the RVG of "Black Fire", but not enough to pay full price for it. PS: Here's a link to some Borders Coupons, though they're all expired (at the moment). BUT, the link appears to go to a dynamic page that will likely include other Borders coupons in the future, though!!! Link: http://www.xpbargains.com/st_deals.php/Borders_deals.htm EDIT: Here's a 10% off coupon (good through the end of July), though I'm still looking for something better. http://f.chtah.com/i/9/276579820/JuneChicagoCouponPage.html

Probably not cheap enough to warrent buying for somebody and sending it through the mail (for instance, there's a brand new "sealed" one currently at half.com for $49.99), but if any of my fellow Kansas City Organissimosiosos is looking for this title cheap, and locally (no shipping charges), there's currently one at the CD Whorehouse at 81st at Metcalf, in Overland Park [(913) 649-0976]. Just saw it last night, for what it's worth.

The new interface requires quite a bit more "clicking" to find what it is you're looking for. Everything is on a different tab. Can't say that it's better, but it sure does have more bells and whistles. I'm all for the audio-clips, which are an exciting new feature. But the new interface, where you have to click "more" to read the full review of any album (not just the bios), is really a drag. Some of this is change just for the sake of change, which isn't all good.

Favorite Disc in the Miles Plugged Nickel Box
Rooster_Ties replied to vibes's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Re-reading this thread again (and Sangry's posts especially), Jim - I'd be really interested in hearing your thoughts about the live recordings of this band in 1967 (on that fall tour of Europe), and how they compare --- AS A BAND --- with the "Plugged Nickel" band. (And anyone else's thoughts too.) More specifically, Jim, does everything you've said above apply equally to the '67 band??? --- or do you somehow hear the 1967 band in a different light??? I know I do. I know I can't articulate it as well (not by a long shot), but the 1967 band seems so much more refined to me, but still every bit as fiery as in '65 (I'm only talking about live recordings from both years, not studio work) . I like the Plugged Nickel material, don't me wrong. Some of it I even love!!! But I feel much more at home with the live 1967 band, like THAT'S the Miles band that I'm closest to, in my heart. I've got about three or four hours of material from that '67 tour (from Oct. and Nov. of 1967), and I wouldn't trade it for all the tea in China ---- where I'm not nearly as "wildly enthusiastic" about the Plugged Nickel recordings. I don't think it's just that they're playing more contemporaneous material either (Masqualero, Riot, Footprints, Gingerbread Boy, etc...). Maybe that’s part of it, but even the standards have a much different feel in late '67 (to my ears), than they did at the PN in '65. What’s your take on the ’67 band, LIVE, Jim?? -
Thrilled to see "Speak Like a Child" in there. The alternate takes from this session are pretty signifnicant. One of them has a lenghy solo-piano interlude that is radically different than the master take (the master doesn't have a solo-piano part at all), and is well worth the price of admission alone. I've got the Herbie BN box, but plan to probably pick up "Speak Like a Child" as a single, if only because it's just about my all-time favorite Herbie disc.

There are a wide variety of opinions about the unreleased material from the box-sets. I, for one, have been very happy with nearly all of it. The only time I think they might have gone overboard was that very last disc in the "Miles & Gil" set (with all the disjoint takes, and repetitive takes). But other than that, I think all of the unreleased material deserved to see the light of day. Does that mean all of it is equally valuable?? No, probably not. For instance, I've yet to get totally into much of the "Bitches Brew" set. But then people have said the very same thing about the "Jack Johnson" set --- where I'm just excited by the unreleased material there (on the "Jack Johnson" set), as with any of them!! So it's really probably a matter of what periods in Miles' career one is the most interested in.

Just sent you an e-mail about the Davis. -
LOTS of cheap copies of "Warm Valley" to be found on half.com, if anybody's looking for one. There's two that are "like new" for only $3 a pop (plus postage).

I've loved all of the Holland groups with Steve Coleman, and nearly all of them with Chris Potter. But I'm with Chuck... I absolutely do not get the Dave Holland big-band, at all. I haven't heard the big-band live, but I've got the disc. And I though it was "B-" material, in terms of arrangements, and even excecution. And I've heard the same thing from quite a few others too.

Keep 'em real, please, please, please. Nothin' wrong with B-cups and even A-cups in my book. Hey, women come in all shapes and sizes, and variety is the spice of life. And while we're on the topic... Link: The Mystery of Britney's Breasts

For my money, the only two Wynton discs worth owning are Black Codes and J-Mood. (Hey, it's my money, I can do with it what I like.)

Thanks for the update. Count me in for another donation at some point in the near future. And thanks to you, Jim, and to Mr. Fist o' Doom too!! -- for all your hard work in keeping this place up and running!! -- Rooster

Not a problem for me. Just deleted about a dozen of them.

Just sent PM's and e-mails to Jim and his bro, Mr. Fist. I'm assuming they're aware of the problem, but just in case... EDIT: Also just "reported" the first post in this thread. Surely one of those messages will get through.

Goofy stuff on the web
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Anybody remember "Eight is Enough" - the TV show??? Remember Willie Aames?? "Bibleman" is Aames' gig these days. Aames is Bibleman, seriously. And how does Rooster know this?? - you might be asking yourself. Well, one of my wife's co-workers has a dog -- yeah, I said "dog", a bulldog to be more specific -- (and the bulldog was named Rudy, if I remember right). And this dog was in one (or more?) episodes of Bibleman, and may have even been a reoccurring character. I shit you not... -
Can't bring up "Today's active topics" at the moment. Get the following error... FYI...

Oops, got confused with the AIA: American Institute of Architects. Thanks for the correction...

And it's not like BN is ever gonna release those Kenny Cox albums on CD. (Not a chance in hell, if you as me.) I've got burns of both of them, and they're quite good. They won't change your life or anything, but as examples of one of the earliest reactions to Miles 2nd quintet, I do think they are fairly important (historically speaking). Bring 'em on!! B)
