Just did a simple image search on your name, with Google. (Found it HERE.) Also, about not knowing if it was a good idea to take off your mask... Hey, everybody, remember - Paul's probably got dirt on every one of us, from years of lurking here, and back on the BNBB, so watch it. AND, since he hasn't revealed much about himself yet to us, we ain't got nothin' on him. Remember that, before you go givin' him too much hell about anything.

Hi Paul, and welcome back to the U.S.!!! Did you make it to the Victoria and Albert Museum, by any chance?? Or any other London sites that you saw, or at least any worth mentioning?? When my wife and I were in London back in the Spring of '01, I thought the Tower Records (at Piccadilly) was only "so-so", at best. Sure, better than anything in Kansas City, but not "light years better", like the really big Towers used to be 10 or even 5 years ago. How was the food over there?? Or did you play it safe, and hit all the great ethnic restaurants, like my wife and I did. What little truly "British" food we had was perhaps "OK" at best (except for the Fish 'n' Chips, which was great!!), but otherwise sometimes not even quite that good. But, we had incredible Indian, Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, Italian, and various other kinds of ethnic foods while we were there - and loved practically all of it. Is this perhaps a better picture of you??

Just sent you an e-mail. Thanks!!

There's a video of the Ted Kopel episode on the web site. Hmmm. Wasn't there yesterday, but I'm not surprised they already had it up there as recently as today. I just checked, and "thankyoufortakingmycall.com" is down at the moment. Wonder is ABC's legal department has been hard at work.
-
Speaking of ABC... Yesterday some smartass called into ABC News and claimed he was with the New York City Subway Transit Athority (or whatever that department is called), and Ted Koppel interviewed him live on the air as the first "expert" they talked to during what was our regular 5:30pm "National News" time (in the Central time zone, I'm in Kansas City), or what would be their normal 6:30pm national news time (on the east coast). So, the jerk introduces himself, and says "Hi Ted, and thank you for taking my call (dot com)". (The "dot com" part he said under his breath, but you could clearly hear it.) Then he proceded to make up answers to Koppel's questions, including suggesting that they were able to communicate with the subway operators via "telepathic radios", and that he didn't want people to just get out of the subway cars on their own without help from the proper police and/or athorities, because they might get into areas where "Beauty and the Beast" might be. Then he asked everyone, once the power comes back up, to log onto "thank you for taking my call dot com" and download the 'instructional' videos found there. And THEN (even after all that!!!!), Ted said "that's all well and good, but what about what people need to be doing now??", and the guy again (for the third time!!!) said on national TV(!!!) to log on to "thankyoufortakingmycall.com" and download the videos, and then, and only then (after all that!!), did Ted (or probably a producer on the show) cut the call, and move on to other things. My god, I knew this was a 'goof' call 10 seconds into it, and Ted Koppel and/or the producers of the show let this jerk go on for at least 60 seconds (maybe more like 75 seconds), and let him mention his web-site name three time!!! Shheesh!! I've still got the thing on tape, if anybody wants a transcription of the whole exchange. Anybody else see this?? (My wife was late getting home, and had asked me to tape the 5:30pm national news.) "You see, sometimes without warning, my brain suddenly shrinks down, real tiny - like almost this size. And after that, there's no tellin' what'll happen!!!"

Overplayed Tunes, from The Real Book
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Musician's Forum
Any reactions from any of the musicians on this board to this particular part of my original post?? I don't mind it every now and then, but several times a night (probably 2 tunes per set) is far too frequent for my tastes. -

By the way, I wrote this description of Pink especially for you Sangry. I knew that if no one else did, at least you'd understand exactly what I was talkin' about. (just an IMG link to the AMG, so don't nobody flip out on me.) -
Overplayed Tunes, from The Real Book

Yeah, "Blue Bossa" was another one I thought about including, 'cept I never hear it now that I'm in Kansas City. (I used to hear it a bunch back in my college days, though). "Blue Bossa" is too progressive for Kansas City, if you can imagine that!! (Or at least too progressive to get overplayed.) EDIT: Shit, now I can't get Blue Bossa out of my head. Now it'll be stuck there all afternoon!!! --> --> -
My opinion as well, down to the exact half-star. For me, Blue John is a very good and solid album, but nothing worth paying top-dollar import prices for, if that were the only way to get it (at least not for me).

I hear ya, Jim - and that was my point in starting this very thead. There's a ton of music out there, of various and moderate degrees of interest to many of us, and we probably get to hear it (or in this day and age, to "see" it) with enough frequency that we have no need to buy the stuff. You know, cool stuff from genres that are otherwise not very high on our spending priority list. -
Overplayed Tunes, from The Real Book

Definitely "Confirmation" - if I had to single out one Parker tune as being overplayed. Personally, I never seem to hear "Solar" all that often, and I think it's such a great tune - that when I hear it, I'm nearly always glad it got called. OK, here's one that some of us are probably sick of, though not me - cuz I don't hear it nearly often enough to get tired of it. And like "Solar", I think it's just an amazing tune... Nardis But I only mention "Nardis" because I'm guessing some folks here are probably tired of it, I would think. -
Seriously, if you could only have one CD/LP

Wow, I have that very box set (the Shostakovich quartets), but I'm afraid I haven't listened to it probably as often as I should. Your mention of it here in this thread may prompt me to give it another spin in the coming days. Thanks!! -
Judging from the title and subtitle of this thread, can I ever hope that "Ron Carter" is the topic of discussion on the next edition of "Crossfire" - on CNN????

Ok, another band who I've liked almost everything I've heard on the radio by (them), is... The Foo Fighters But I'd never dropped a dime to get any of their CD's. But if they had a "greatest hits" CD come out, I'd probably buy it that same week. Beck's another one. Cool stuff I've heard on the radio, and I even caught one of his wild-n-crazy shows about 2 years ago. Hell, it was one of the best 'rock' shows I'd ever been to, and was just plain 'fun' for days. But I've borrowed several Beck discs from a good friend of mine, and I can't ever get moved enough by them to go out and buy my own copies. -

Overplayed Tunes, from The Real Book
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Musician's Forum
Yeah, I damn near included "Well You Needn't" in my original list. Didn't have the heart to, cuz it's Monk --- and good Monk is always good. B) But bad Monk, is... well..., often as bad as C-Jam Blues. -

My god, Lode Runner!!!! I haven't thought about that in YEARS!!!!!! Ahhhh, them were the days!!! -
OK, "Free For All" was wondering what tunes I thought were overplayed, so here are some. I'm flipping though "The Real Book" just now --- and yeah, I'm not a jazz musician, but I've got a Real Book, which I've had for years. (No idea where I got it. but I only paid $5 for it, so no harm done.) Anyway, here are some tunes that I think I've heard enough substandard versions of, to last me well more than a lifetime. (Presented in alphabetical order, though the first four are by far the worst (in terms of being overplayed), at least in my book.) All Of Me As Time Goes By Autumn Leaves How High The Moon My Funny Valentine Satin Doll (though it's my mother's favorite Ellington tune) Take the "A" Train and C-Jam Blues (not in the Real Book that I could see, but I get bored with this the second I hear it) I might have also almost included a Monk and/or Parker tune, though I can't fault any specific tunes in the book, so I guess I just think Monk and Bird are overplayed, at least by some --- though I'll always welcome any Monk tune from any group that can do something interesting with it. ========== And that leads me into a side-rant. (Yeah, this is going to be one of those kinds of threads. ) One of the other things I hate is when less-than-inspired musicians play a tune, and then just as soon as the head is over, when the go into the solos --- they go into standard blues changes, or "Rhythm" changes, such that absolutely NONE of the character of the original tune is carried over into the rest of the performance. Zero, zilch, nada!!! I mean, I can't count the number of times where (if I hadn't heard the head), that I'd have any chance in hell of guessing the tune, based on the solos or the comping behind the solos. I mean, why do a tune in the first place, if you're gonna do utterly generic stuff for 90% of the performance?? An example totally UNLIKE this, is when I heard "Free For All" recently play a stunning version of "Beatrice" by Sam Rivers. The chord sequence of the tune (under the main statement of the melody), formed the basis for the comping behind all the solos each person in the group took. Even when there were chord substitutions (which there were), one could still follow where the group was in the form, pretty much at any given point during the solos. I'm not saying everything has to be hummable, at all times. In fact, I love it when a group drops the form for a bit - or mutates out of it slowly. What I do hate, however, is generic changes (quote-unquote) "that will work for almost any tune". Lazy, lazy, lazy - if you ask me - and I do nothing but get bored real quick. ===== So, what other "standards" (tunes) are you sick of hearing and/or playing (and perhaps have been sick of for years), and what other performance practices are you tired of hearing among the "less-than-inspired" segment of your local jazz scene??

Except, by having it the way it is now - that encourages people to take advantage of "buy it now" options right then and now!! - cuz if you wait and somebody even so much as make a silly $1 opening bid - then you won't get it. The way the system is now encourages quick decision-making when the "buy it now" option is available.

Who'd waste $ on that stuff? OK, I do own a handful of Beastie Boys CD's (3 or 4). And years ago I had a couple Public Enemy discs, though I must have passed them along to someone else at some point - cuz I haven't seen them in years (though I kinda wish I still had them now). But, I certainly wasn't meaning to suggest that these other genres weren't worthy of purchase. Just that over the last 5 years my interests have gone so strongly in the direction of jazz and 20th Century classical music, that I've just not done much impulse purchasing outside of jazz, classical, and the pop/rock music that I (and my wife) already know we like and/or love. But no, I'm certainly not bashing rap as a music-form, though like everything - there's both good and bad. By the title and subtitle of this thread, and meant to discuss pop/rap/rock music that we all like enough to be kinda interested in, but never enough to really go out and explore more fully - as in buying many CD's. -

Man, I saw a video by them/him once, set in a highschool basketball gym I think. Very cool tune - made me want to hear more. I think the tune was called "Rock Star", or at least I remember that phrase being in the chorus of the tune, rhymed with "cop car" I think. That guy Pharrell Williams (seems to be the lead singer and possibly the main creative guy behind "N.E.R.D") is real interesting, from what little I've seen/heard. Also saw him in a Snoop video recently, and some other rap video with P. Daddy and half-a-dozen other tougher looking rap dudes. You know, I like never buy any rap CD's, but there are particular tracks that grab my attention fairly strong, when I cross paths with them while flippin' up and down the wasteland that is cable-TV in this country.
