  1. Roscoe Mitchell, Old / Quartet (Nessa) Lukas Foss / Jan Williams - Elytres / Paradigm / Ni Bruit Ni Vitesse / Dream Lesson Yves Nat, Beethoven Piano Sonatas (Haydn Society)
  2. Very interesting. That really does sound like an actual sample. Segment appears around the 18:15 make of "On the Corner; New York Girl; Thinkin' One Thing and Doin' Another; Vote for Miles."
  3. Dig that musical saw.
  4. Air, Montreux Suisse. That's a pretty fine array! Got to get my hands on that Lacy "Outings." It's a great one, I highly recommend it. Lacy solo, overdubbing himself at times.
  5. Steve Lacy, Outings. Lauren Newton, Timbre. Arthur Blythe, The Grip.
  6. Thank you for the birthday wishes!
  7. I was in Scotland in a "fry shop" and was getting tired of eating deep-fried food (burgers, haggis, Mars bars--you name it, they'll drop it in the deep-fryer), so I ordered a slice of pizza, figuring I'd be safe. To my horror, they picked up the pizza and dropped it in the deep fryer. Had a burger cooked the same way and it was revolting.
  8. I gave that a spin today as well. Bradford is the Kenny Dorham of the cornet--as in highly underrated--but I'm glad this album is getting lots of love.
  9. I've got the Braxton House CDs but did not know about this LP. Interesting! Curious as to sound quality? It sounds good. Definitely one of Braxton's best alto solo albums. I believe Brandon Evans ranked it as is favourite. Apparently, co-producer Velibor Pedevski opted to release it on vinyl because it sounded much better than the proposed CD. It was supposed to have been released with the original Braxton House CDs back in 1996 or '97, but it didn't come out until 2003.
  10. Anthony Braxton, Solo (Skopje) 1995. Really nice solo set from Braxton. It was supposed to be among the first Braxton House CDs, but never got issued until it appeared on overpriced vinyl 10 years ago. It can be downloaded from the Tri-Centric Foundation site at http://tricentricfoundation.org/label/braxton-house/solo-skopje-1995/
  11. Where did you read this? (Not doubting, just wondering about the source.) Two of my all-time favorite improvisers. I wouldn't think to put them together, but who knows ... It's from interviews with Lacy collected in the book Conversations. I don't have the book in front of me, but I believe they played together not long before Giuffre recorded his album at the Five Spot. I'm think that combination would have worked much better a few years later.
  12. IIRC there was an unrecorded Giuffre quartet with Lacy around this time. Lacy and Giuffre played together a couple of years earlier for a few weeks (1960?), but there was a lack of compatibility and it didn't work out.
  13. That is exciting news. There's a real dearth of post-Free Fall material out there. That trio with Davis and Chambers sounds very interesting.
  14. Ran Blake, Rapport (Novus). Exquisite music.
  15. That is crazy--that's a $25 record. Still sealed = probably warped.
  16. Starting your label was not financially wise. But we're glad you did. Indeed we are. Speaking of the label, now listening to:
  17. On vinyl? What a great session that was to kick off a label.
  18. Amadeus Quartet, Beethoven String Quartets Ellen Fullman, Event Locations John Fahey, America (Takoma) Evan Parker, At the Finger Palace
  19. That inspired me to pull out the version on Wergo. Different players, but also features a well-known composer on piano, this time Lukas Foss himself.
  20. They were cancelled and replaced by a sandcastle competition on one of Sochi's lovely subtropical beaches.
  21. Pauline Oliveros, Drifting Depths/Eleh, The Beauty of the Steel Skeleton
  22. Nope. Miles liked his playing.
