  1. "Sealed Mint Blue Note" = UA blue/white b label, warped vinyl.
  2. That's a great comparison and like Sanborn, he had pretty broad interests beyond his pastel jazz ride of the '80s. Besides the dates with Mariano, I really like the wild Round Trip with Chick, Vitous and DeJohnnette and Kenya Ya Africa, where Watanabe's quartet is joined by the Inter-African Theatre Group.
  3. That's a great way of putting it. I passed on buying the Record Store Day EP dressed up as an LP, but definitely would be into a digital release. Things were rapidly evolving for Trane in 1960 and would love to hear the mostly audible evidence.
  4. He wrote an awful book on Miles Davis' electric period, which was full of errors, such as wrong personnel, confusing Jumma Santos for Juma Sultan and descriptions/opinions that had no relation to reality. The large list of errors was compiled here: https://web.archive.org/web/20160427225113/http://www.miles-beyond.com/freemanerrors.htm
  5. Is Track 3 Kauro Abe? Great blindfold test. Really enjoyed track 2 and the heavy Basie vibe of track 4.
  6. Here's the tracklist for the Waldron: Tracklist A1 - All Alone (6:26) A2 - All God's Chillun Got Rhythm (10:40) B1 - Fire Waltz (11:13) B2 - I Thought About You (8:07) C1 - It Could Happen To You (5:47) C2 - Round Midnight (6:50) D1 - Stella By Starlight (11:15) D2 - Old Folks (feat. Sonny Stitt) (3:02) D3 - Stardust (feat. Sonny Stitt) (4:31)
  7. l would love to see a 1975 Miles Davis Japan tour box and the rest of the Coltrane Half Note stuff ("Creation"!). Would be nice to get the Olatunji concert on vinyl, too. We're more likely to get Miles 1987 live and The Gentle Side of John Coltrane remastered by an audiophile dudebro.
  8. Xenakis, Kraanerg, from the Erato 5 LP box.
  9. Can't find the source right now, but I remember reading in a Jones interview somewhere that Keiko had studied piano in Japan. I really dig her tunes, as well, especially "Mr. Jones."
  10. RIP. He left behind some great trio work plus some fine albums with Liebman and in Abercrombie's quartet.
  11. Really enjoyed listening to this. The only track I recognized is #9, Hannibal's "Soul Brother." Fantastic tune!
  12. Amen to the Barron and the Bill Dixon-related Savoy albums. A George Russell set would be cool, too. Though the music straddles 1960, I'd love to see a Jimmy Giuffre Verve set. Anything by Mal Waldron. If there's any unreleased tunes or alternates, an Ahmad Jamal on Impulse would be a nice set.
  13. Saskatchewan 75
  14. I've been mostly underwhelmed by the series (though the Rollins Village Vanguard set was great), but this is a good list. Particularly excited to see Big John Patton, Larry Young and Andrew Hill titles. Hopefully, the latter doesn't have the warbling piano issue that the Black Fire Tone Poet had.
  15. According to Ralph Towner, the band showed up at the photo shoot to find Elvin passed out after a bender. "So, what do they do? They put this picture of the four of us on the cover and put this big smiling picture of Elvin’s face on it like a sticker glued on top with these drumsticks around it. The art director was so bad." Innerviews: Ralph Towner - Unfolding Stories
  16. Track 4 is from André Jolivet’s Pastorales de Noël. Nice post-Debussy vibe. I have no idea who is playing but my wild guess is it’s members of Ornette Coleman’s one-time backup band, the Philadelphia Wind Quintet, plus Marilyn Costello on harp.
  17. Track 3 is Carla Bley, Steve Swallow and Andy Sheppard, “Beautiful Telephones II”
  18. Sad news. He brought such great knowledge to the board, often from an eyewitness perspecitive. RIP.
  19. I loved #3, too. The saxophonist sounded familiar in more of a Lennart Aberg way rather than a Jan Garbarek way and I didn't even notice the bass at first. My initial thought was Europeans, JAPO not ECM, and a whole "we once played with George Russell" vibe. JSngry's hint tells me I got the Russell connection right, but, if this is what I think it is, the more well-known pianist and bassist were a surprise to me.
  20. RIP. Her astute notes to Coltrane Jazz are my favourite liner notes on a Coltrane LP. Also one heck of a pianist. I have the LP and it's definitely her, she's in the credits.
  21. Many were recorded at Richard Alderson’s RLA Studios,
  22. The Sam Rivers sessionography references an audience recording of an afternoon performance from the day before. No idea if it was professionally recorded. Great news that Second Act of A may be getting reissued--the interplay between Taylor and Cyrille on that set is stunning.
  23. Schubert, String Quintet, great two cello piece with Pablo Casals and Sandor Vegh's quartet.
  24. Complete Beethoven String Quartets, Amadeus Quartet
  25. Not a court ruling, but law. There are 90 countries that have artist’s resale right legislation guaranteeing artists will earn a share from the resale of their work, including European Union countries, but not the US of A. Canada talks about it a lot, but no law yet.
