Gary Burton (been discussed many times before here). Does RCA hold the rights to Flying Dutchman? Might be some potential there. Desmond and Rollins were boxed at least twice (US and Euro versions, I think). Gato Barbieri's Flying Dutchmans were boxed, too (yes, by RCA), not sure if there were two editions as well. Gary Burton's RCAs would be most welcome! I thought this was actually planned at some point in time? But there's been no news about it for a long time, right? Chuck, I haven't heard many of these Lacy RCAs, so I can't comment about the sound... but I guess a good engineer could fix that? At least in case Mosaic would indeed release such a box, I surely hope they would try their best as they usually do!

I haven't read all this thread (being at work), but I repeat: Winamp, a nice and free music player for your computer, allows you to pull music back from your ipod to your HD. I've got a 30GB ipod but probably around 200GB of MP3 files (some blogosphere rarities, but most of it my own CD rips, usually @ 320 kbs). No need to have a huge ipod, but rather put some of it on some harddisk (my internal one is tiny, only 160GB, so I have several 750GB and 1TB HDs - FLAC files need space, you know!) And I never used the automatic synchronisation function back when I used itunes in the beginning, as I always purged the stuff from the library there, so had that function been on, it would have wiped it each time I connected it... I never used itunes to play tunes on the computer, so there was no point in maintaining that library. So my advice: get winamp, give some thought about how to organise your MP3 library (big enough HD in your computer? separate partition? external drive? second back-up external drive?), get any kind of player (I only have this one ipod - have had it for a about three years I guess - but it seems other players are about the same in quality and handling) and change around the music on your player every now and then...

All the music that was on the LPs will be in the box. I have not seen a track list but the cover of the box is exactly like the covers of the LPs so it should have everything! That's good to know! I guess this is a likely candidate for acqusition then... if you find out more about the 26CD set, I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one to appreciate more info!

What would there be to add? There was plenty of Sketches of Spain and Round About Midnight related material in the 6CD boxes, and they added the (great!) 1958 session with Bill Evans to the KoB Deluxe set, but would there be anything for the two you mention? I assume the few alternates of Milestones are on the new single disc already, and Someday My Prince Will Come (one of the very few albums that wasn't in any of the box sets, only the tracks with Coltrane were on the respective 6CD set) contains a couple of alternates as well. The only of these that I bought is "Round About Midnight", to have the official releases of the live tracks (although of course there are a few more tracks from the famous Newport 1955 concert which were not included on the deluxe edition.

Yeah, but often with these soft/hardware manuals I don't understand sh*t... I don't even know what "firmware" is, although I updated my external burner's firmware. I'll look into the rockbox thing though. I still burn most of my live shows (FLAC downloads usually) to CDR, as I don't have any means to hook up an external drive to my amplifier... so having FLAC on an ipod would be rather useful.

Is that 20 CD box a reissue of kinds of the old "Djangology" 20LP set? I once almost bought it, but the time I had made up my mind it was gone... MG, I'd assume most of the Universal 5CD set would be taken from the Jazz in Paris discs (which have also been boxed, I think?), and as brownie said, some of the Mosaic might be in the 20CD set (but the Mosaic is Swing/HMV, that's Sony/BMG, no? The 20CD set is EMI! Confusing!) I'll jump for one of the large sets once a few more details are known. So far I have all the Jazz in Paris discs, the Mosaic, and Definitive's 4CD set collecting all the recordings Django made with American musicians (including the fine All Star dates that were also on a single Blue Note CD - you ought to look for those sessions, MG, they include the classic recordings with Coleman Hawkins, Benny Carter and others!)

No you can play straight albums. It's just that shuffle is a nice way to mix things up. Ah, thanks TTK MG Sorry for the confusion! What I wanted to say is: I always use the album option except for some cases, where like Lester Young I loaded the complete discography onto the ipod. Since we have some rather newbies here (as digital media player users, that is), just a note again that Winamp lets you pull music off the ipod onto your computer (in case you accidentally delete something that you still have on your ipod - happened to me a couple of times...) As for the FLAC thing, isn't that a bit of a touchy thing to interfere with the firmware? The only thing I did do so was with an external burner (that cost only 20% of an ipod or even less) where the firmware was also being offered by the manufacturing company... I'm cautious about this, but if I could play FLAC and MP2 without conversion, that would of course be nice! (Winamp does that automatically, but I've never bothered to find out what settings it uses, or if the compression rate can be adjusted for this automatic compression - ituned btw also does change MP2s into MP3s automatically).

I have only got a few of these (the Billy Hart, one of the Hadens, Jim Hall Live, Cherry's Brown Rice, Brubeck/Desmond), but got another one recently, and I think it's pretty good: Dr. John's "City Lights" (reissued in Universal's "Verve Originals" series).

I've never used the shuffle on my ipod. The only thing that goes beyond albums there is that I loaded the complete Lester Young, with recording dates as "albums", which with the "play all" option allowed me to play whatevver bit of his music I wanted... but "generation ipod" goes for single tracks, so I guess going for the full discography is quite to the contrary of trends.

don't you have to turn them around halway through? Seriously: interesting observations! I grew up right as the CD got wide-spread, but I still have about half a meter of vinyl and occasionally buy some more. I never play vinyl just for background listenig, or very rarely do so, for the same reasons you mention. But on the other hand, most often I play CDs straight through as well, it's very rare that I hit the repeat button or program my player or anything. It happens that I hit the repeat button at the end of a disc, though.
