Oscar Peterson (fire away, but I'm really starting to love his music big time!)

Does the Mingus have anything on it which wasn't on the great 3CD set that came out several years ago? Is there really any reason for me to buy it or Sketches if I already have the Mingus box set and the Davis/Evans box? thx Not only does the Mingus not have anything that wasn't on the 3CD set, it appears to be missing the three alternates from Mingus Dynasty that were on disc 3 of that set. I guess they could not fit the entire earlier set onto 2 CD's. Given this, I see no reason to buy the new legacy edition, even if the mastering is slightly different and the notes are nice (which they also were on the 3CD set). That's a bit weird... that 3CD set was sold for the price of two CDs over here, and it's indeed great, definitely among the best recording ever made by Mingus, and great to have them all restored and in one place! As for the Brubeck 2CD set, that one looks tempting, I don't think I know that live recording so far... does anyone have more details about the bonus disc? (Disc 2, I don't care for the DVD, really, unless of course if it was a live show, but it's not...)

Oscar Peterson Mosaic is available for preorder
king ubu replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Got this box a couple of weeks ago in a local store, immediately read the lenghty introduction, but only started listening on Friday night... been on a trip, also bought 8 of OP's 9 MPS studio albums (skipped the one w/voices, I might reconsider...) and 3 of the 6 "Exclusively for My Friends" (will be looking for more... there's a nice Universal sale going on, also including quite a number of re-pressed OJCs). Anyway, I'm really turning into a fan right as we speak (well, right as I'm typing, that is). Does anyone know, are there plans for further Mosaic sets, most obviously the Ellis or Thigpen trio studio recordings? There's a hint going in this direction in McDonough's (very good, I found, but I'm an OP neophyte, so...) notes. -
there are plenty of threads on Mingus, for instance: Mingus' most unappreciated album Music Written for Monterey... and one more Debut box set Sue Mingus interview on AAJ Town Hall Concert (OJC) Let My Children Hear Music The Great Concert of Charles Mingus The Birdland 1961/62 sessions Live at Montreux 1975 DVD Mingus At Monterey Reed players with Mingus Changes Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus and I'm sure there are other interesting threads not linked above...

you said it very well. thank goodness i got to hear him innumerable times! I envy you very much for this! The best I can get is watching some DVDs...

Besides the Barney Wilen (which I got a while back), that's the one I really want! They should venture out and bring back some of the more adventurous stuff, too... Cecil in the Black Forest and that Indian album with Wilen, Schoof and Irene Schweizer would be high up on my wishlist! I think the later was on one of the Motor Music world twofers, but I missed that one...

That's very sad news. Lots of good European jazz there, too (think of Henri Texier mainly).
-
also Randy Newman... bought four new (old CDs), but had "Good Old Boys" and "12 Songs" for a while.

Dylan has a new album out soon, "Together through Life"

I quite like the new CD! That one parlour song kind of thing is terrific, "Life Is Hard", I think? -
Silence, Love or No Love for Lionel Hampton set????
king ubu replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I don't have it yet, as it's not running low... but I'll definitely try and grab it in time! http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=35215 -
of late: Milcho Leviev - a nice trio album, "E.B. Blues", on a tiny/non-existing Swiss label, as well as the Don Ellis tribute solo album on Mighty Quinn Tons of Bossa Nova, mostly from the Elenco Series (Nara, Vinicius & Cayimmi, Vinicius & Odette Lara, Odette Lara, Sergio Mendes, Jobim, and more), as well as five or six from Universal's Heritage Series (Baden Powell, Tania Maria, Sivuca, Luiz Bonfa), and more (the "Tom Feminino" sampler, "Os Afro Sambas", the soundtracks of "Orfeu Negro" and "Garota de Ipanema") also other recent discoveries include: Fletcher Henderson and Eddie Condon (their respective runs of Chronological Classics) and next up will likely be a first bigger dip into Oscar Peterson's music - got the Mosaic recently and hoping to get the "London Sessions", too (ordered from a marketplace seller, hope it's actually in stock...)

I think Sangrey gave the answer above... Mingus is Mingus, no use in trying to cover too much of the music. And though I appreciate and enjoy the Mingus Big Band, even there, much of the music sounds tame and softened/sweetened, compared to the raw energy of Mingus. It was his own uplifting bass playing and band-leading genius that made him so special, and to bring all that to the fore, he obviously needed his own music... it's a whole musical universe there, and I guess I could live in it exclusively for a couple of years without missing anything! Probably indeed, his music is even more difficult to cover/revive than Monk's...

yeah, but they had things go OOP only to let the resurface as RVGs a bit later... and Cliff Jordan has not been in print for a while

post-haste my friend!!! Salomão is no lounge music - it is SMOKIN HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some of it is on that compilation, will dig up that one first!
-
I have the Dave Pike Set "Masterpieces" compilation from the earlier generation of MPS CDs (Motor Music, mid/late 90s), and I think that will do... some of the MPS albums are available now on that label selling their CDs for fantasy prizes... The Riverside is much more interesting, I find, and if I want nice easy listening/loungs stuff, I'd rather go with "Manhattan Latin" than the MPS. Though it does seem like I should check out "Salomão"...

hm, I posted a reply in this thread today - was it deleted by the mods or was there some kind of technical problem? It included some snide remarks about various "Blue Trane" editions but still no readily available reissue of "Cliff Jordan" or the Tyrone Washington ablum... now if that's already something in need of moderation I'd be quite worried, but I hope it was just some technical issue, otherwise I'd like to know!

new box set on Oscar Peterson Songbooks???
king ubu replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
if it's "Originals" it will be as many discs as there are albums... no packaging other than a box around the individual discs, I guess... still not sure if I need to get the Mosaic or not... but I suppose eventually I will... -
just bought one of those cheapo Capitol pop/easy/lounge/whatever twofers, containing her album "The Cool School", with Joe Castro heading a quartet and June doing silly songs - but it's all nice! The other album I didn't actually need (but that I found out at home only, of course...), it's "Do Re Mi", the vocal parts of which are on the "Songs for Night People" CD and the instrumental parts (Bob Cooper, of course, it's also him leading the backing band for the vocal sides) are on the Kenton Presents Mosaic box. I guess there'd be a few nice ones around in this twofer series, but mostly only the worst seem to end up in local sales, alas (no Julie London, no Peggy Lee, no June Christy etc - not necessarily in that order, btw ).

It's on CD, I must have mentioned that five times at least, but somehow no one seems to take notice - fine stuff! http://www.jhmrecords.ch/en/catalog/detail/jhm_3627.php

hm, yes, maybe... but I think it's exactly that that makes it attractive to me... the fact that it's not just Dexter blowing with some first-rate rhythm section (his Blue Note album with Drew is one of my favourites!), but rather there's some kind of "moderation" by way of arrangements (Slide Hampton), some shorter and more concise solos (Dexter could do that, of course - ample proof can be found on his Savoy and Dial sides).

could you figure out any of the other problems with this disc?

Got this disc cheaply in a sale and am giving it a first spin. Sounds like Tete alright on the first two titles: Wait a Second (Montoliu) 2:58 Spring Is Here (Rodgers-Hart) 7:15 w/NHOP, Bjarne Rostvold rec. between 1966-76 from the liners by Henrik Wolsgaard-Iversen: *) except for the only session that is dated, Copenhagen Jazz Festial 1982, #3 and #6 it seems Actually, why I found this thread is because I was hoping to find correct/more complete details for this very crappily presented disc (containg some very nice music, though!) Quality control, fellas!!! The "Ø"s in NHOP's name are all missing except for one, and there are obvious mistakes in the discography given, very annoying. Bjarne Rostvold is given as drummer on all titles, plus: #1-2 are listed as stated above #3 & #6: Copenhagen Jazz Festival 1982, Ben Besiakov (p), Bo Stief (b) #4 & #9: Atli Bjørn (p), NHOP (b) #5: Paris, Jesper Lundgård (b) #7 & #8: Richard Boone (tb,voc), Thomas Clausen (p), Mads Vinding (b) #10 Niels Husum Septet: Allan Botschinsky (t), Niels Husum (sax), Niels Neergaard (tb), Torben Munk (g), Ib Lund Nielsen (b) Now #3 is "Blues Blues Blues" by Jimmy Heath, the notes say, but it sounds like an over-familiar hardbop tune, I think by the Morgan/Shorter quintet version of the Jazz Messengers (or is it Horace Silver's "Soulville"?). Also, on #6 there's a very fine trombone player present, which leaves room for doubt about this being from the same occasion as #3... These are just some of the "issues" with this disc, I bet by taking a closer look, more questions would turn up... I also tried to look it up on the Storyville website, but it's not working right now.

I missed many of them... started buying in the 90s, when the Tristano/Konitz/Marsh was a new release, roughly (or rather, a few months later... in these my pre-internet days, new wasn't as new as it is today). Some of the ones I missed and regretted a lot: - the three Commodores (though back then they wouldn't have been of interest) - the Teagarden Capitol (which I think I could have bought early on, but again, lack of interest back then) - the Basie Studio Roulette (gone already, or I'd have bought it, got the live one at least!) - the Art Hodes - the Blue Note Jazzmen one (Hall/Johnson/DeParis etc, got the single discs, but the contents of disc 4 weren't reissued) - the Jimmy Smith (which I missed because of not being online back then... I sent in an order for the Smith and more, asking for the Fuller in case the Smith would be gone, and gone it was...) - the Goodman Small Groups (though I got a cheapo set with the master takes last year, for 7 or 8 euro-zlotys...) - the first Johnny Hodges The Condon I could buy recently from some seller here... but in that one again, I'd have had no interest back then... And I'm sure my list misses other sets... the Cecil Taylor Candid, the Mingus CBS (though I assume the most recent Sony/Legacy CDs are the better option anyway, with all the restored music), the Charles Brown, the Amos Milburn, etc. etc. I got to hear some of these thanks to generous friends, but I'd still love to have the real deal! reading above yes, the first Armstrong, too - another one that would have been still around, but I had no Armstrong back then and started with the Hot Fives/Sevens later on, still not being attracted to the old guys doing their retro/old-fashioned stuff in later eras... And the Nat Cole, too, though I'm not sure it would actually be listened to that often...

Hope you're doing well, Rodney! Congratulations and all the best!
