  1. Only LP you have? Only Trovesi you have? Only Trovesi you know? If either of the latter two, do change that! How about Italian Instabile Orchestra?
  2. Sad news - but I guess he had quite a life indeed and left us with some great music! Much obliged, Mr. Wilson!
  3. Paul Desmond's RCA albums, one with strings and several in quartet with Jim Hall.
  4. Grant Green's wonderful "Am I Blue" also ... there are more organ dates, but soul-jazz organ dates I wouldn't really know. "Am I Blue" is pretty darn soulful though, but that's not what soul jazz is about
  5. Remondini was a regular Trovesi sideman at some point, "Electric Five" is duplicated between this and the Rava set (and it's good no great, I'd say), don't think I've ever heard of Alfredo Impulliti ... Anyway, re: Trovesi on ECM, I guess I agree - the Trovesi/Coscia on Egea is better than their ECMs I've heard. But add Enja to the game, if only for "Round About a Midsummer's Dream" - that, to me, is probably one of the finest jazz albums of the nineties.
  6. Well, whatever it is, this was my first Blakey album and still is my favourite - I'll get this new edition for sure!
  7. some good stuff coming up ... Freddie Roach - Brown Sugar http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=UCCQ-5046 Freddie Roach - All That's Good http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=UCCQ-5064 Art Blakey - Free for All (+ 1 - what would that be?) http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=UCCQ-5047 Wayne Shorter - Super Nova http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=UCCQ-5054 Larry Young - Unity (+ 4 here - again, those are new alternates I assume?) http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=UCCQ-5049 there are many more, but I did some "manual" digging and those are the ones that ended up in my wantlist ...
  8. This must be the album cover thread with the highest percentage of cheap and ugly covers, ever! Now we even get what, child labour?
  9. I know ... it still seemed kind of like a natural idea though. But anyways, there'd surely be others capable of doing this in a good way!
  10. here's the CD version of the terrific Pleyel 1948 concert of Dizzy's: I'd love to read those Morgenstern liners though ... can anyone help me out there?
  11. Certainly often those Prestige CD twofers had ugly covers ... but then the point is that an LP cover shrinked to CD size is never ever "original", it's just never the same and I will never get that fake pretension lying underneath the transposition of one format onto another - it just doesn't work. The "original album concept" for CD reissues of albusm originally on vinyl is bonkers (and I'm mostly a CD person, as you know), it's not taking the "original" its dignity if bonus tracks get added or cover art gets adapted ... reissue is never original. And as for "ignoring", all I meant is I mentioned that twofer a few minutes before MG did.
  12. Well, really, if LPs get reissued in CD format, if they re-use the original cover or not does only make a big diff'rence to anally-retentive folks, since it's not "original" anymore anyways ... but original liner notes were often re-printed in those Prestige twofers (though if they reproduced 70s vinly twofers you might get those notes - or both sets of notes) and the original covers were mostly there in stamp size, too ... and you guys ignored my post it seems, not that it really matters, of course.
  13. Well, on "Dual" you get him in both his "roles": trombone and piano. The Mosaic Select (OOP of course) collected some of his finest. His hip-revisionist "Traditionalism Revisited" is a wonderful album. You also get to hear him with Gerry Mulligan (quartet, sextet, Concert Jazz Band) and he was a key contributor to the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra ... and he also made a two-piano album with Bill Evans (which Blue Note/EMI has dutifully neglected, I still don't properly own it, all there currently is is some Spanish crap edition, I think) - a terrific musician!
  14. Happy Birthday, old man
  15. Those are all REALLY nice albums. My favourite is 'Walking down', because Eric Dixon's tenor playing is so strongly snaky. But are they underrated? Well, how would I know? I LURVE Bennie. MG Well, how would I know how to define "underrated" in the context of this very thread? These are good albums, I love Bennie too (and many of those other big-toned, rough'n'tumble trombone players you listed as well!), and you don't see them (or Bennie) mentioned all that often ... so I guess yeah, they might indeed be underrated.
  16. well, as for Bennie Green, he made some fine rekkids for Prestige too and you don't see them mentioned all that often: I'm generally pretty fond of two-brass quintets ... and love the cover of the one w/Art Farmer! You get Addison Farmer on bass, too - how's that for underrated!
  17. I guess I like all kinds o'bones Another one:
  18. I buy an album for Fuller, but rarely for Person ... different strokes. And I guess Fuller's Prestige albums would fit here.
  19. it's on this twofer (one tune or two of one of the albums might be missing): http://www.allmusic.com/album/trust-in-me-mw0000012925 Lots of albums mentioned here that I'd not have expected to be underrated, but what do I know ... but then yeah, George Braith, Taft Jordan, Freddie Webster ... the Prestige vaults are heavy! Lots of love for Dickerson and Jack McDuff here ... but McDuff, Willis Jackson - underrated? Today maybe, but back in their days? Not sure if Rusty Bryant is a similar case ... (re: Houston Person, I still don't quite "get" him ... it took me a while to wrap my mind around players like Fathead or Don Wilkerson, but I guess I'm still not quite ready for Person) Oh, and Clifford, go get that Hal Singer! Perfect candidate for this thread! Wonderful album indeed!
  20. Yeah, it was wonderful playing tihs all the way through yesterday! Really, no need to have any reservations about the vocals, Hamp sings it as he plays it - and whatever he does, he swings it! What I noticed were the many excellent rhythm "motors": Allan Reuss, Jess Stacy, Clyde Hart ... some underrated folks! Even when the drumming gets goofy (Hamp) or flashy (Hamp and a number of others), they hold it together in a powerful, swinging and yet relaxed manner.
  21. Great posts, guys - very thought-provoking! And actually, "Some Other Stuff" has long had a cult-following (of one) wherever I was - tremendous record!
  22. I hear you ... I really should get the NYAQ, I know! They list one distributor in Germany, but they don't list it on their site, no idea if they could get another copy for me and what it would cost - guess that might be worth a try.
  23. uhm, how did they manage to get a video onto vinyl? how much music is on there? probably less than a full CD's worth - price really is ridiculous ... I'm still tempted by the NYAQ box though, but gee! Add to that the import fees and VAT and all that sh*t and it goes up to at least 400 bucks!
