  1. He was double her age when they met ... love the films they made together! She had a long life ... and had some great parts late in her career too (such as in Lars von Trier's "Dogville" - she was pretty darn great there, I found).
  2. Some nice surprises here ... my taste has changed so much so in the meantime (since my last listen a few years ago) that I really enjoy the Ramparts Street Paraders this time. Matlock/Miller are mighty good (I've had a soft spot for Miller for a long time though, ever since first hearing him on the Classic Capitol set by Mosaic) and there's some pretty good stuff by others, too - George van Eps most notably (i.e. Monday Date). Still not that big on Dorsey, I'm afraid ... but I remembered the more than two discs of Ramparts as the least interesting segment of the box and it's a pleasant surprise to listen to it again! That dude on bass sax has some nice spots, too - never really noticed his name, Joe Rushton.

  4. very sad news
  5. starting with this one now ... not all of it is very good, but the best of is very good and much of the rest is enjoyable
  6. Played the "Master Jazz Piano" box in the morning - some very good stuff there! Maybe not much that is outstanding, but I really enjoy most of what's on it! Now:
  7. Making my way through this for the first time right now - and enjoying the sh*t out of it! However, I wonder about the contents ... several discs/sessions are licensed from other labels (the original material I assume is being treated as PD) but no infos about actual original releases are given, just labels. I don't have time to piece it all together, but maybe someone has already done some closer investigation (or knows all the stuff included in the box inside out) and can help? Below's a tracklist (partly found online only, amended by yours truly, hope it's correct) plus the discography listing from the Storyville site - I'm adding in italics the additional info from the booklet and some more I could quickly identify (just in case, I've not had time to really read Brian Priestley's liners, but from the parts I've read, there are no informations given on provenience of the recordings): TRACKLISTING: CD 1 - Billy Strayhorn: The Pianist & Composer 1 Passion Flower 2 Take the 'A' Train 3 Strange Feeling 4 Day Dream 5 Chelsea Bridge 6 Multi Colored Blue (Also Known As Violet Blue) 7 Something to Live For 8 A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing 9 Tonk 10 Johnny Come Lately 11 In a Blue Summer Garden 12 Tonk (Pianistically Allied) 13 Drawing Room Blues 14 Tonk 15 Johnny Come Lately 16 Take the 'A' Train CD 2 - Duke Ellington & His Orchestra Play Billy Strayhorn Compositions 1 Something to Live For 2 Grievin‘ 3 Johnny Come Lately 4 Take the „A“ Train 5 Mid-riff 6 My Little Brown Book 7 Day Dream 8 Bugle Breaks 9 Metronome All Out 10 I Don't Mind 11 After All 12 Kissin' Bug 13 Just A-sittin' and A-rockin' 14 Clementine 15 Paradise 16 Passion Flower 17 Satin Doll 18 Newport Up 19 What Else Can You Do With a Drum? 20 Blood Count CD 3 - Various Groups Play Billy Strayhorn 1 Take the „A“ Train 2 Chelsea Bridge 3 Just A-Sittin' and A-Rockin' 4 Lush Life 5 Isfahan 6 Just A-sittin' and A-rockin' 7 Satin Doll 8 Take the 'A' Train 9 Blood Count 10 Take the 'A' Train 11 Johnny Come Lately 12 Satin Doll 13 Chelsea Bridge 14 Take the 'A' Train CD 4 - The Dutch Jazz Orchestra Plays Billy Strayhorn 1 Everything Is Copasetic 2 Hip 3 Blue House 4 Hipper-bug 5 Pretty Girl 6 Anatomy of a Murder 7 Swing Dance 8 Feet On the Beat 9 Matinee 10 Jo 11 Flame Indigo 12 Fol-de-rol-rol 13 Tiffany 14 Orson 15 Lozit 16 Pomegranate CD 5 - Billy Strayhorn Played by Scandinavians 1 The Intimacy of the Blues 2 Paris Blues 3 The Star-Crossed Lovers 4 Chelsea Bridge 5 Portrait of a Silk Thread 6 Day Dream 7 Lotus Blossom 8 Blood Count 9 Upper Manhattan Medical Group 10 Chelsea Bridge/Star-Crossed Lovers/Day Dream 11 Passion Flower 12 Three and Six CD 6 - Billy Strayhorn Played by Ken Peplowski, John Horler, Phil Lee, Alec Dankworth 1 No One Knows 2 Lotus Blossum 3 Ballad for Very Tired and Very Sad Lotus Eaters 4 Rain Check 5 Snibor 6 Noir Bleu 7 The Star-Crossed Lovers 8 Something to Live For 9 After All 10 Multicolored Blue 11 Mid-riff 12 A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing CD 7 - Billy Strayhorn Played by Harry Allen, Chris Flory, Keith Ingham, Dennis, Irwin, Chuck Riggs 1 Smada 2 Depk 3 Jazz Festival Jazz 4 Intimacy of the Blues 5 All Day Long 6 Balcony Serenade 7 Snibor 8 Strange Feeling 9 The Kissing Bug 10 Newport Up 11 My Little Brown Book 12 Mid-riff 13 I'm Checking Out, Goom Bye 14 Rain Check DVD - Billy Strayhorn Played by Various Groups 1 Take the „A“ Train 2 Mid-riff 3 Chelsea Bridge 4 Passion Flower 5 Satin Doll 6 Medley: Lush Life/Solitude 7 Take the 'A' Train 8 Satin Doll 9 Take the a Train DISCOGRAPHY CD 1 Tracks 1-10 Billy Strayhorn (p) Michel Gaudry (b on 2,3,8,9 & 10) Paris String Quartet (strings on 4 & 10) Paris Blue Notes (vo on 1,6 & 8) Recorded in Paris, May 1961 LP: "The Peaceful Side" (United Artists) Tracks 11,12&13 Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn (p) Joe Schulman (b) Recorded in New York, November 1950 3 (out of 4! 8. it's my only Richie Cole ... ugly cover, lovely music he can be heard to good effect on some of those steaming hot Buddy Rich big band albums on Pacific Jazz (he was on board 1969/70 I think - at least that's when he was on records) also he made some records with Red Rodney - I've got some of that on one of those Camden 2CD sets from the 90s, not played often yet though ...

    Evan Parker

Wow, Parker and The Necks - a rather unlikely combination ... wonder what that will come out like!
  10. just in case intakt has a two disc set of some Voerkel recordings available: http://www.intaktrec.ch/voerkel.htm
  11. Yes, some care. But others seem to be unable to grasp why that is and keep proclaiming there superiority that they thinketh lieth tehrein.
  12. Another telling phrase from that article: Thanks for your attempt to explanation of this whole thing, Larry - makes a lot of sense what you say! This guy definitely shares the narrowness of conception and thinking that the Crouch/Marsalis gang is so good at. Some of his points are so clueless, his premisses so far off the mark - it's pathetic. I'd be ashamed to publish something like that (but then I wouldn't and this dude wouldn't know, so really, there's no point in discussing this much furthre).
  13. The smaller ones do (i.e. Jochum or Böhm Symphonies), and of course all the Universal Italy ones do (the Jochum and Böhm might be italian, have the later, but not at hand to check). Also the Abbado Symphony Edition went down quite some (to less than 50€). Not sure about the Pavarotti ... I want a few of the recordings it contains and as they're not around in cheapo, librotto-less reissue versions, it might in fact be cheaper to get the big box - but then again, there's stuff in it I really don't think I'm going to like all that much (though that's not based on actual listening).
  14. Interesting! The Montréal Tapes aren't from 1990 though.
  15. Thx, don't need it then ... but will have to look for my CD, time for another spin - remember it as being pretty good!
  16. Is this the Galaxy two disc set offered again as a download?

    Norah Jones

Same here. This thread sucks. I thinks points were made rather clearly, both by Allen and Jim. Would be okay, I guess, to have some sort of grown-up discussion, but that seems impossible - and at that, futile, too.
  18. So it was Satchelmouth's birthday and I missed it? Happy birthday and all the best, Lon!
  19. Seems so ... but if it bothers you really, you maybe ought to take a stand against moronity such as that New Yorker piece, instead of proclaiming an anything goes and no one was hurt attitude. Just think about it for a second.
  20. no one hotter than the Spanish teacher
  21. Granted - but I think Jim made some good points why this isn't just your harmless attempt at humour. At least not to everybody, obvsiouly. Sonny already found out (but that may have been reported in the other thread dealing with this bull).
  22. Indeed, that was immediately clear to me, too. At least this time the author isn't anonymous (like in the moronic "Sonny Rollins" piece), but this personal attack is very bad style.

    Norah Jones

That, alas, is not how it works (and not how it worked after Norah's debut had filled BN's pockets).
  24. Crazy weather all of July and continuing ... sun and rain within minutes, hot and humid to pretty cool within hours ... if anyone needs any more proof of climate change, there it is - whole year was weird already - no winter at all (I don't think it was ever below freezing for a whole day), summer was probably what he had in June, but it was way too warm in March already.
