  1. Got way too much Horowitz to bother for the big sucker ... and frankly I think I already have more than I really need. The "really need" so far boils down to his Scarlatti, Chopin, Liszt ... and some very, very good Schumann ... I might forget a few things, but I've got some 30+ CDs of this material, Columbia/Sony and RCA heritage - I guess the big sucker combines both, right? I've seen these two a while back and wanted to ask what people here might think of them: Contents listed here: http://www.deutschegrammophon.com/us/cat/4792690 I'm tempted, all I know are the Mozart sonatas and I think they're very good. And then there's this one: I read some rather lukewarm reviews on an ealier box collecting the Mozart concertos, but again, I am tempted! The DG set is in the 60€ range, the Erato in the 40-45€ so far ... the DG would have to go down a tiny bit in order to spare me from the custom n*zis, but I'm patient ... Finally, DG seems to start mining their Fricsay treasures, too .... Vol. 1 coming in July - some info here: http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/ferenc-fricsay-complete-recordings-on-deutsche-grammophon-vol-1-orchestral-works/hnum/5121748 Don't know much of his recordings so far ... but I might be interested in the opera box if they follow up with one! Not sure I need this one, probably have all or most of the concerto recordings with Haskil, Martzy, Menuhin and Morini ... but no symphonic stuff of his at all yet.
  2. So it does include non-BN material, too ... milking it!
  3. Sorry to read this! Was hipped to this disc by brownie (man, I do owe you big deal for all the stuff you shared and made me aware of! ) And indeed that's some very good music in the Carmell Jones Select!
  4. re: that outrageous spilled coffee lawsuit ... when it says "contents hot" and the coffee I get is only warm, can I sue?
  5. great news Chuck, both reissue and news-wise!
  6. Bringing this over here ... sorry for intruding the Malaby thread, thought it was the regular "what live music"-thread! Oh, I've seen the New Orchestra ten years ago and they were effin' unbelievable! Sun Ra Arkesta about four or five years ago - and that must have been one of the greatest parties I've ever been to. So yeah!
  7. demand better? yup! hope the Sun Ra Arkestra and said Barry Guy will deliver next week! www.taktlos.com But I'd surely give Malaby another chance if he were in town again!
  8. Just out of curiosity: do you read German?
  9. Just found this: http://www.musik.uni-osnabrueck.de/veranstaltungen/tagungen/musik_bezieht_stellung_funktionalisierung_der_musik_im_1_weltkrieg/english_version.html Most of the articles in the book resulting from this 2012 conference are in German though: http://www.v-r.de/de/title-0-0/musik_bezieht_stellung-1011830/ Direct link to contents: http://www.v-r.de/pdf/titel_inhaltsverzeichnis/1011830/inhalt_978-3-8471-0206-9.pdf And to the introduction by M. J. Grant - which is in English (following a German foreword): http://www.v-r.de/pdf/titel_einleitung/1011830/einleitung_978-3-8471-0206-9.pdf
  10. Great one indeed!
  11. And thank YOU, too - I've got a used copy of the Zimmermann/Busoni disc in the mail (or so the vendor said, crossing fingers).
  12. Can be found here: https://archive.org/details/ClarenceWilliamsBlueFive-TexasMoaner1924 I guess I first heard it on this LP (which is in my dad's collection): http://www.discogs.com/Louis-Armstrong-Sidney-Bechet-Louis-Armstrong-Sidney-Bechet-With-The-Clarence-Williams-Blue-Five/release/3315281 If you want it on CD, this here would be a great choice (but careful, that great series is addictive!): http://www.fremeaux.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&category_id=64&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=803&option=com_virtuemart It's also on the old 4CD set "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" - okay enough remastering I'd say, a good selection indeed, and very good notes in the rather extensive booklet.
  13. There's also Wynton Attractive enough package I'd say, but I've probably got most of those albums I really want (Gould, Fleisher, Rubinstein, Casals, Lenny doing Gershwin, Nuria Rial, Horowitz, Staier, Hahn ... also the Huelgas and Harnoncourt/Mozart discs, both of which I've not listened to yet). A few others are tempting, but not as many as would justify buying this (the Frank Peter Zimmermann Busoni disc I might have to look for though).
  14. Darn those expectations anyway! But, geographically speaking, it isn't that far to North Korea either. Not expecting to find many TOCJs there. Or maybe that's where they all go and why they're so hard to find? I mean, him looking at squeeze boxes is a strong indication the regime loves jazz, isn't it?
  15. He used Jeffrey already before the Giants tour (the first tour that is, there were two - in 1971 and 1972) - for instance in Japan in early October 1970, with Larry Ridlley and Lennie McBrowne Arrgh - don't know what's wrong. If you search for "Monk Jeffrey" in YouTube, you'll get there right away.
  16. source for that: http://sunraarkive.blogspot.ch/2008_11_01_archive.html nice find!
  17. Thanks caravan! Didn't know about the hats - but yes, that one is indeed identical, I noticed! Would love to have been there, but alas, I was born too late ...
  18. No idea if it's legit with respect to royalties and stuff ... no idea what deal they struck, but it seems to be a good karma release - as Chuck reported previously, by the way!
  19. moronic ... but nice covers
  20. Hard to say anything about the bass player, could just be his hand is in the light there. The wristwatch is barely detectable, but it *could* be the one the bassist in the video is wearing, I'd say. But caravan seems so sure as if he actually knew - that's why I'm asking!
