  1. From the New York Times: Peter Fonda, the writer, director and actor best remembered for playing a motorcycle-riding avatar of the counterculture in “Easy Rider,” an emblematic film of the 1960s that he helped write, died on Friday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 79.
  2. The Yiddish word for five is “finf” so the question “do you have a five?” is roughly “ton ir hobin a finf”. Finf was shortened to “fin” and caught on from there.
  3. Sounds good. Let me know when you guys will be here so I can lay in some food and drinks.
  4. When I finally put my cue back in the rack, I'm thinking of leaving my collection to our local jazz radio station, KMHD. I have over 100 Mosaic box sets so even if they didn't want single CD's they might like those.
  5. On the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock Music & Arts Festival, let's take a moment to remember its opening act, the great, wholly unique and, IMO, under-appreciated Richie Havens:
  6. Here are a few other lesser known 60's bands and artists worthy of a second look: Camel Rare Bird Upp Three Man Army Pink Fairies Blodwyn Pig Bebop Deluxe Cold Blood Sons of Champlin Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks Moby Grape Batdorf & Rodney (the latter was the son of Red Rodney) Shawn Phillips ian Matthews (w/ and w/o Southern Comfort) Pacific Gas & Electric Kalapana The Blues Project
  7. For those unfamiliar with the Keef Hartley band, here's one of my favorites from their album, "Halfbreed." '.
  8. To put this in context, the Beach Boys earned $300 for their first paying gig in Long Beach, California in 1961.
  9. With all the 50th anniversary talk, I thought folks might find it interesting what the performers at Woodstock were paid. Here's a list. 10. If you enter "vogue box sets" or words to that effect on Amazon's website, there's a listing of all the artists and their performances on the 20 CD's that make up this package. I would have copied and pasted the link, but Amazon won't allow that.
  11. Makes the recently released and no longer available Woodstock box look like pocket change.
  12. No doubt far fetched, but I kept thinking that Coltrane could have laid down a monstrous soprano solo on on top of those instrumental breaks.
  13. Whew !! For a second, I thought Tencent was a rapper.
  14. Might be interesting from an aural perspective, but not $25 worth of interesting.
  15. The Marcus King Band. This kid is the real deal.
  16. IMO, best film ever, highlighted by Jerry Goldsmith's haunting score and the trumpet of Uan Rasey.
  17. Studio recording of Charlie Manson singing, "Look At Your Game Girl". Is it just me or does this not sound half bad?
  18. Another contender has been identified:
  19. The double whammy. Not particularly good looking and unfortunately named. But if we're talking only names, no more calls, we have a winner.
  20. Andy Etchebarren's nickname was "The Neanderthal Man"
  21. Long time baseball fans will remember Don Mossi. He pitched in the big leagues with several different teams in the 50's and early 60's. A rather odd looking man whose baseball cards have become somewhat collectible. The obituary in today's Detroit Free Press actually referred to him as a "five- tool ugly" player. Mossi was 90.
  22. Peter Brotzmann's attorneys are preparing a lawsuit as we speak.
  23. Jean Pierre !!! Jean Pierre !!! A bit soapy at times but when they stick to racing, it's excellent.
  24. I thought Benedetti used a wire recorder.
