  1. Just finished watching it. Thanks for reminding me. I can't help be reminded of the lyric from the Dead's song "Truckin'". "What a long strange trip it's been." If you're at all into Green, this is a must see. It goes all the way back to his early days and time with John Mayall. To say that it's a sobering account of the rise and fall of a one of the two or three best guitarists from the 60's would be an understatement.
  2. If you're in any way a Top fan, this is must-see TV. I as lucky enough a few years ago to see them with Jeff Beck. Beck joined Billy and the boys for the encore. They did "Tush" and "La Grange". It was epic.
  3. I've been on a Peter Green bender for the last month, so this 2-CD set has been taking up a fair amount of my time.
  4. Geez...I'd buy a recording of these guys running scales in the dressing room. Bring it on.
  5. Just to clarify, I was talking about Rushing's vocal work with Basie. I'm not familiar with these other recordings. although at first blush, it appears that there may be more to him than meets the eye.....and when you're talking about Mr. 5x5, that's saying something.
  6. Not to be disrespectful...I know how valuable Rushing was to Basie and you can't argue with the enthusiasm he brought tp the table...but I've always thought he was set on the 12-bar blues rinse / repeat cycle.
  7. In round numbers, how much Jimmy Rushing is on the Goodman/Young set? Call me irresponsible, but for me, a little of him goes a long way (as if the words "little" and "Jimmy Rushing" can peacefully co-exist).
  8. Great. I've already missed the Allman-Betts Band and it looks like Maria Schneider (end of April) and Hall & Oates (early June) may be in jeopardy as well.
  9. This video was included in the March 8th edition of the Mosaic Records Jazz Gazette. It's a film of the Ellington band from 1950 rehearsing very informally in what appears to be an outdoor setting. When Duke begins to clap around the 1:50 mark, he's off the beat. This is something I expect to see in audiences populated by folks who couldn't locate the beat if their lives were on the line, but not Duke. Should I be concerned? Am I overreacting? Am I required to report this to the authorities?
  10. Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, have both been diagnosed with the virus. They have been traveling in Australia.
  11. You want to see how crazy this has gotten? Watch this video of a Costco in Lower British Columbia just after it opened for business a couple of days ago.
  12. With respect to Peter Green, if you have a few extra minutes, you may find this 1996 BBC documentary of his "comeback" to be of interest. If you've followed Green's career, you're aware of his debilitating experiences with LSD had left him all but non-functional. This piece details his long, continuing, winding road to recovery.
  13. As well-respected as he is, I still think Peter Green is underrated.
  14. The end of the classic quartet. What a legacy. R.I.P. Mr T. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/06/arts/music/mccoy-tyner-dead.html
  15. A number of jazz musicians including Louis Armstrong, Barney Bigard and Gene Krupa appear briefly in "The Glenn Miller Story", the 1954 bio-pic starring Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson..
  16. By all means, keep us posted. Hoping for the best.
  17. The impact of losing both parents in a matter of weeks is hard to grasp. I wish you godspeed in finding your way through this.
  18. Jimmie Haskell, the music director for the Ozzie & Harriet television show, was awarded Grammys for his arrangements of Ode to Billie Joe (Bobbie Gentry), Bridge Over Troubled Water (Simon and Garfunkel), and If You Leave Me Now (Chicago).
  19. Archie Shepp at the Newmark Theater in Portland, Oregon. Part of the PDX Jazz Festival. Opening act is a group called The Blue Cranes.
