  1. I would welcome a carefully chosen and thoughtfully organized Mosaic box dedicated to the music of Jimmy Heath. Heath is 93 years old. What a great way to say thanks.
  2. Two other (one famous, one infamous) model train enthusiasts. Frank Sinatra and Hitler's second-in-command, Reichsminister Hermann Göring.
  3. In no way do I condone Cherry's recent comments. Nevertheless, I will miss his unique perspective and the manner in which he presented it. Not to mention the crazy clothes. His chemistry with Ron MacLean was unmatched and will also be greatly missed. Cherry's on screen persona and mannerisms also lent themselves to some pretty amusing and good natured derision. For example, the piano desk.
  4. Hank is my all-time favorite jazz artist, not just as a musician but a writer as well. Any sort of recognition is long past due and more than well-deserved. Better late than never. Up over and out.
  5. Since the death of Dale Earnhardt, U.S. automobile racing has seen its popularity plummet. Gran Prix appears to be the healthiest of the major players, but Indy Car and NASCAR have fallen on hard times. If you're a fan, you have to cross your fingers and hope that Penske will be able to gin up some much-needed interest in American racing.
  6. IMHO, "Chinatown" is the best film of the last half century and a classic in the so-called Neo-noir genre. Not to mention, Jack Nicholson's finest work. Perfect scoring from Jerry Goldsmith featuring the haunting trumpet of Uan Rasey. What's not to like?
  7. Thanks. There's a difference between deliberately playing out of tune and doing so unintentionally. IMO, "Home" is clearly case of the former.
  8. Were there any liner notes? It would be interesting to hear what either Murray or whoever wrote them had to say about the album. For me, "Home" would not fall into the "rewards repeated listenings" category.
  9. Bruce Springsteen's latest, "Western Stars".
  10. This one on 180 gram vinyl:
  11. Yes. Highly recommended.
  12. It gets better. The Byrds opened that night for Jefferson Airplane.
  13. Speaking of endless reissues, does anyone have any idea how the remaining Beatles or their estates are compensated for a release like this?
  14. I've had that book for probably ten years and I've yet to read it. I need to get off the dime. In any and all of their iterations, The Byrds were as good a band as anyone ever put together. I was lucky enough to have seen them twice. Once early on with Clark and Crosby and later with Clarence White.
  15. I'm a huge fan of The Beatles, but there comes a point when the endless stream of reissues becomes usurious. Like Jim, the mono box will be the last Beatles music I'll ever want or need. Save your money for the second installment of Mark Lewisohn's Beatles biography which, hopefully, will be out sometime next year.
  16. I'm guessing its the analytics crew. These days, baseball runs on statistics and probability. Those who wish to manage by feel, experience and...yes...hunches, a.k.a. managing by the seat of your pants, need not apply.
  17. I went through a watch buying phase quite awhile back. I still have several Invictas, a couple of Renato T-Rex's and a Chase-Durer which, on the infrequent occasions that call for a watch, is the one I'll wear.
  18. The weather in New York is going to work in favor of the Astros. Verlander and Cole with an extra day or two of rest are going to be that much tougher. I'm also fed up with Aaron Boone. Two of his decisions have left me scratching my head. First, in Game 2, Chad Green is throwing BB's, yet Boone has already decided that if Springer bats, he's bringing in Otovino. Springer goes yard. You manage in the moment, Aaron, not in advance of the fact. Then, in last night's Game 3, when the Yankees have LaMahieu and Judge on first and second with no outs, you let Gardner who's hitting all of a buck and a half, swing away instead of sacrificing. Brutal.
  19. With recent posts having to do with Art Blakey and Ginger Baker, I was reminded of a YouTube video with the two of them playing together in something resembling a "drum-battle." WARNING: Crappy video.
  20. That's a matter of opinion. I'm more attracted to Mobley's earlier material i.e. the recordings included in Mosaic's initial treatment. For want of a better term, there's a freshness to those (the so-called "round sound") that I don't hear in his later efforts. Add to that the fact that the first Mobley set includes his work with Sonny Clark and that tips the scales. I'm pretty sure I have all the material from '63 forward on single CD's, so as of now, I'll probably pass on this. Needless to say, the lure of a new Mobley Mosaic may overwhelm me when it's finally available. If the sound is demonstrably better, I could easily cave.
  21. Not sure there's ever been a character like Baker. A near genius musician, but let's face it, a card carrying asshole. I'm going to do two things note his passing. First, listen to a live version of "Toad" and, second, re-watch, "Beware of Mr. Baker." That should about cover it.
  22. Sometimes his lyrics were a bit off the wall, but when The Dead played his songs, it didn't' matter.
  23. Maddon out. https://www.si.com/mlb/2019/09/29/chicago-cubs-joe-maddon-future
