  1. For what it's worth this is my impression of the CD. High resolution transfer from original master tapes by Kevin Reeves. Sound restoration and mastering by Fran Gala & George Klabin. The sound is centered around the saxophone. An echo from the concert hall is audible on the saxophone, especially for Coltrane. Drums, percussion and piano receded but audible, bass very low in mix. Drums, piano and even bass become clearly audible for solos. No distortion like Olatunji. Coltrane plays magnificently. Essential late Coltrane.
  2. The metal spine set was my introduction to Bitches Brew. I think the post Bitches Brew studio material included wasn't all that interesting, but I no longer own that set, so I can't offer a revised opinion. The 40th Anniversary set has superior content, I believe. My metal spine box also had glue on disc 4 (did not prevent playback). That greatly annoyed me, so I got the 1999 2CD as well. The hybrid SACD will be my fifth Brew, then.
  3. I had always assumed the Complete Columbia Album set contained the remix! A strange situation. That box it seems contains a lot of remixes for pre-electric period albums, but then remix In A Silent Way, the orginal Bitches Brew mix , the Agartha vinyl mix, but the later Pangaea complete concert mix. So, either I have shit in my ears like Stanley Crotch, or I should start listening to the Complete Columbia Album Collection CDs over the 40th Anniversary set more often.
  4. I was going to post something pretentious about hearing the frontline (trumpet/soprano/bass clarinet) as neotrad and the rest as colour/texture, but maybe just getting a few bottles of the 40th ann. Bitches Brew brew would help more... Like Stanley Crouch in the interviews for Electric Miles (Isle of Wight concert DVD). Over the years, he listened to it stoned, he listened to it sober, but Miles Davis wast just trying to make some money. Yeah right. Crouch has shit in his ears, no doubt.
  5. The 40th Anniversary set was a must buy over the 2CD/1DVD Legacy just for the Tanglewood concert. I was lucky and found the 40th new for €39 in Amsterdam.
  6. I have the SHM. It is in stereo, and you can still hear the effects of Van Gelder compensating during the recording for Sonny moving around the room. It is good, but not your best bet for a best sounding version when including vinyl. The SHM does not have the excessively hot highs on Philly Joe's drums from the RVG. There is a lot of high just from the way Van Gelder recorded the drums, but this is one disc where you can clearly hear that for the RVG he made the drums white hot. Another white hot RVG is Smoke Stack.
  7. I have the original mix on the vinyl from the 40th Anniversary box, but, alas, no turntable to play it on. The only piece of vinyl in my collection.
  8. The Columbia set is now only €99.99 on Amazon.de. That is below the pre-order price and significantly lower than on Amazon UK and US.
  9. Cecil Taylor Quartet - Nailed (FMP)
  10. I'll get the hybrid SACD as well. I've heard mp3 sound snippets of the original mix compared to the Wilder remix, and the original had a different feeling to it (the drums if I remember correctly).
  11. A couple of sets for sale now. bluenotesound
  12. That's a great set, I have the vinyl version; too bad the sound is so wretched... I had reached the conclusion that the individual Candid CDs sound worse than the Mosaic. Correct?
  13. I had an instant liking to Ike Quebec and I'm a big fan of the sound of older saxophonists like Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins. I'm sure I'll love Born To Be Blue.
  14. thnx for the thumbs up btw hint reg. "matador".......will reconsider A warning on Matador. While the BN SHMs generally include the bonus tracks from previous US releases, Matador misses the bonus track from the 1990 CD which made it the complete session. I can't see this track being logically reshuffled to another Grant Green SHM. Sound is awesome, of course. Wasn't Wives and Lovers original recorded during the Solid Session? If so, that's the best place for it. You're right. And it was included on the recent BNLT999 reissue of Solid.
  15. New transfers by Bernie Grundman, probable Japanese mastering or tweaking.
  16. Good pick up. It's one of my favorite Mosaics. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I believe I will. I've had my eye on that set for a long time, and had previously ruled out getting the CDs issued by Candid themselves. Looking at Cuscuna's feedback profile, there has been a lot of activity from him on ebay lately. Worth keeping an eye on bluenotesounds. Some of the sets auctioned today were also on sale earlier this month. Is it "bluenotesound" or "bluenotesounds"? I searched for both and came up empty. Sorry, it's bluenotesound. All of today's auctions ended within 15 minutes or so of each other, so none are listed right now.

  18. A lot of long OOP Mosaics were just auctioned off at ebay by seller bluenotesound (Stamford, Connecticut. Cuscuna?). All mint never played sets. I bought a copy of The Complete Candid Recordings of Cecil Taylor and Buell Neidlinger on CD numbered 0039.
  19. This afternoon, I received a shipping notice for the new Coltrane Temple University 2CD. So, they still have stock. I'm really looking forward to this possible release of the year.

  21. And they use sturdy packaging. Mosaic Selects always arrive undamaged.
  22. Thank you. I just ordered and added the Sam Rivers Reunion 2CD to qualify for free EU shipping.
  23. The set has been released in Germany, samples now up on Amazon.de. Sounds quite good, actually. I'm going to take a chance and order this.
  24. Is Catalytic Sound what used to be Okkadisk? What would be the best option for Europeans to order through catalyticsound.com?
  25. I don't get this joke, and, fortunately, I never saw a whole episode of Friends. American comedies can be torture, and being force-fed Friends should be considered a crime against humanity.
