  1. The flying Dutchman Have a (four year) cooling brake. From the BBC: "Robben became unplayable at the end of the game. Running with the ball at pace, he was simply astonishing." And: Cooling breaks key to Netherlands win - Van Gaal "Yes, I used the breaks. Because first I had changed from 4-3-3 and then we created a lot of opportunities, the shot on the goalpost and a fantastic save by Ochoa. Then I moved to plan B and yes, I did that in the cooling break that is a clever way of benefitting from these breaks."
  2. Ornette's The Shape Of Jazz To Come and Coltrane's My Favourite Things have been re-issued in 2013 as superior stereo hybrid SACDs by ORG Music (ORGM-1080 & 1081). Get them while you can, as their SACD program has been shelved. Only three jazz titles were released, the third being Rollins' The Bridge. All three titles were mastered by Bernie Grundman. The Bridge Shape Of Jazz To Come My Favorite Things The vinyl program was not halted, so there are 45 rpm LPs of This Is Our Music, Free Jazz, Ole, Bags & Trane. I believe there are some mono Coltranes among the new Japanese discs, but they must suffer from hot treble as well.
  3. Just before half time was a real penalty. He was hit twice by two different players in succession. A deserved penalty in the end. On Dutch television Robben freely admitted that earlier on he made a Schwalbe and appologised. This without being asked about it by the presenter. So ...
  4. Great goals from Colombia. Will Rodriguez drown Brazil in tears?
  5. What's the price of a Blue Note SHM at the Jazz Center?
  6. ..so, do you think the Rhino sounds different/better? For one thing, the Rhino Blakey, like the Mingus Passions of a Man box, lacks the hot treble found on these new Japanese CDs. However, I might have given my opinion on the new Japanese discs a few times too many now, and I don't wish to spoil your fun.
  7. Yes, I have the Rhino. By the way, there are more alternate takes available on Dimeadozen. Blue Monk (take 4) - 0:47 Total time = 1 hour 23 minutes 24 seconds Notes: - According to the CD liner notes, "I Mean You" was recorded on May 14. However, Robin D.G. Kelley's Monk biography states the band attempted only two songs on May 14 ("Blue Monk" and "Evidence"); - Some take numbers are my designation, not the recording engineer's, but I generally follow the number identified before the track. Additionally, during the May 14 session, the recording engineer--Earl Brown, I assume--loses track of the take number and says "take 6" a second time. One might assume that during a frustrating studio session (Wilbur Ware showed up drunk and was replaced by DeBrest, plus Griffin and Hardman were struggling with the music) the engineer lost track of where they were at; and - For the official tracks, I have removed the music and left the studio chatter that follows (which was NOT on the Atlantic Records official release). ----------- The track times for the deleted officially released alternate takes make no sense, but the other times seem to correspond with what's on my hard drive.
  8. Quote: An Italian player tells the story of his team’s defeat against Costa Rica. Late in the second half when he and his team-mates were flagging, struggling to keep up, an opponent came up to him and asked, a knowing grin on his face: “Are you enjoying this? Because we are.” The truth was inescapable. “We were dying and they knew it. They could see it and they told us, right to our faces,” the Italian says. Famously no European team has won the World Cup in Latin America but before the World Cup the England manager, Roy Hodgson, claimed: “European teams are better travellers now.” So, Louis van Gaal's new system and emphasis on fitness are justified.
  9. The mono mix might be fine, but the new remaster is shit (hot treble). My two cents.
  10. Any opinions on Iain M. Banks' Culture novels?
  11. Duplicate of a from the Classic Blue Notes on SHM-CD thread. My guess is that the SHM-CDs are made from the same transfers, but are mastered in Japan. Alan Yoshida did the first batch of six HD Tracks releases, but was mistakenly credited for a couple more on their website. ------------- Here is a video of Bernie Grundman talking about the current transferring of the Blue Note catalog to high resolution digital for archiving. The project has been going on for four years and these are the transfers being used for the HD Tracks downloads, the "Blue Note 100" vinyl, and almost certainly the Japanese SHM-CDs as well. http://youtu.be/d8o0Gl7XUT0 More here: analogplanet.com (I found a link to this video on the Hoffman board)
  12. There are no reproductions of liner notes on the back of any of the booklets from this latest batch?
  13. does anyone else find this pricepoint exhorbitant? Yes, the regular pricepoint is exhorbitant, certainly given the albums are stripped of bonus material (with the exception of Sonny Rollins' Complete Village Vanguard).
  14. Aren't those tracks (and two more with Jackie McLean) on Quintets now? I'm also going for the Sonny Clark titles a bit later on.
  15. Today, I ordered Sam River's Dimensions and Extensions, Freddie Hubbard's Here To Stay, Grant Green's Matador, and Bobby Hutcherson's Oblique. More to follow.
  16. Biting Breaking News: Uruguay forward Luis Suarez has been banned for nine matches and banned for four months "from any football activity" after biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini. Fifa added in a statement about Luis Suarez's ban: "A stadium ban is pronounced against the player Luis Suarez in accordance with art. 21 of the Fifa Disciplinary Code as follows: the player Luis Suarez is prohibited from entering the confines of any stadium during the period of the ban (point 3). The player Luis Suarez is prohibited from entering the confines of any stadium in which the representative team of Uruguay is playing while he has to serve the nine-match suspension (point 2). "The player Luis Suarez is ordered to pay a fine in the amount of 100,000 Swiss Francs (£65,600)."
  17. Looking forward to today's matches. I hope our Flemish and German neighbours will do well.
  18. I buy a lot of Blue Note SHMs, but then I was sensible enough to stop buying RVGs and Connoisseurs once I decided I did not like the sound (of the RVGs) and EMI's copy control scheme for the EU.
  19. True. My experience with Maximum Rare Records of Japan (ftfym65), however, has been hit-or-miss. This seller doesn't necessarily have all the items he lists as in stock. He does have rare discs — no question there — but if you're ordering (buy-it-now) a disc that's, say, from two years ago — e-mail first to check that it's actually in stock. Just a heads-up for those posting here. I'm not discouraging shopping with Maximum Rare; I'm just trying to prevent some (potential) frustration for members here. I have purchased a few SHM-CDs from this seller without problem. Shipping is slow though. In contrast, the credit card purchase goes through right away. You're right about Maximum Rare Records Japan (ftfym65 on eBay). Over the last year they have become progressively slower to ship items bought on eBay. It can literally take them two weeks to dispatch an order. When I emailed them about this delay and explained the item was purchased as a birthday gift, they were friendly and promised to ship the next day which they did. Maddening. I'm waiting for another order to ship now. It will probably be my last with them. There was one occasion last year where they had completely forgotten about my order. I've just received a shipping notice from ftfym65. Perhaps they read Organissimo? Ha.
  20. It's easy to forgive a Robben when he's playing diving for your own national team. At least the fouling eyesore Van Bommel has retired. Luis Suarez: More Than 160 Fans Cash In On Giorgio Chiellini Bite In Novelty Bet (175/1)

  22. Biting and then there are the match fixing scandals (e.g. Ghana). It's almost WWE wrestling.
  23. Suarez you fucking biter! That Italian player should have punched him in the teeth.
