Yes, the second and third photos were included in the Deluxe Edition of ALS. The first photo is new to me.

New John Scofield Joe Lovano collaboration on Impulse! - Past Present
erwbol replied to erwbol's topic in New Releases
Sound samples here. The SHM-CD has one bonus track according to CD Japan. -
Universal Europe has also started using CD-Rs for older titles that they have run out of stock on. This afternoon I received a CD-R copy of Joe Henderson in Japan that was manufactured in the EU. Needless to say I immediately returned the item to bol.com. Fortunately, I had yet to pay for the order by bank transfer.

Any good source for Fresh Sound, New Talent CDs?
erwbol replied to Bol's topic in Offering and Looking For...
At least you citizens of the greatest country in this or any other universe don't have to pay import duties and can safely place mega orders. Supersize me! -
Those tracks are from 10 December. Some were released on the Deluxe Edition mastered by RVG. Nothing special if you ask me. That deluxe edition was also done from a newly discovered 1965 copy of the master tape from London that did not have added equalisation and compression. Quote: A releaved Rudy Van Gelder declared it to be as close to the real thing as one could get in the analog domain without having the original tape: "This tape preserves the sonic details with vivid accuracy: Elvin's cymbals, the deep intensity of the vocal chant, and the openness of the group sound." Now, if you would like to experience this deep intensity and other fine qualities of the newly discovered 1965 tape, you are much better of listening to the beautiful Platinum SHM-CD with its flat transfer of the tape than the RVG deluxe edition. A world of difference.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Rollins! Long live Newk!
-
Yes, there's little new that's of interest here. I'd rather have an audiophile hybrid SACD of Crescent mastered by Bernie Grundman.
-
Hopefully the live performance is an upgrade over the deluxe RVG. I am very happy with the Platinum SHM-CD, however, which, for what it's worth, has "HR cutting from the DSD master which was flat transferred from original master in 2013" according to CD Japan. PS For completeness' sake they could also have included that bootleg club recording of several sections of ALS from earlier in 1964. But then people would start bitching about the sound, like with the latest Miles Davis Bootleg Series volume.

Request: Can we start some new 'listening to threads'?
erwbol replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Forums Discussion
Only chronic insomniacs. "2 hour period" is a bit generous, Bev. In my experience the board's often knackered from about 6:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. :-( Right more like between three and four hours here too. Longer than it use to be. Basically, forget about browsing between breakfast and lunch in CET-land. -

The period of inaccessibility of the entire board during European morning hours has greatly increased since the recent upgrade. You are most likely asleep by then. -

eBay and/or record buying horror stories?
erwbol replied to Homefromtheforest's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
The Italian stickers are small, but annoying. And what about those idiotic stickers Americans put along the top of all CD and DVD releases? The longer those have been on the harder they are to remove. -
The second half is very different from the first, more like two seasons in one. The Red Dragon storyline was done very well in the last six episodes.

That's OK. I took you off ignore to see if anyone had commented on the Hannibal finale yet.

A continuation is still a possibility, just not on NBC. A movie in a few years time perhaps. Bryan Fuller has been talking openly about the meaning of that final scene, his ideas for a continuation and what would have happened in a fourth season. --- Quote:"Martha De Laurentiis is investigating financing for a feature film and there’s any of a number of scenarios." On that final scene:"Speaking of Bedelia, the series' final image isn't them going off the cliff, but Bedelia waiting to serve a guest who is never going to come. How did you decide that was the image you wanted to end it on. Bryan Fuller: Well, that's a really interesting interpretation of the scene. You think she cut off her own leg and is going to serve it to somebody? She seems as if she is throwing a dinner party. Bryan Fuller: (laughs) No, that's our little nod to the audience that perhaps Hanibal could have survived that cliff dive. She's sitting at the table with her leg on the table and she's looking absolutely terrified, and she grabs the fork and hides it under her napkin and waits for whoever's going to return. This woman still has some fight in her. We don't know if Hannibal is indeed serving her her leg, or is it Hannibal's uncle Robertus, or Lady Murasaki, or is it Will Graham? So it was just your tease for the possibility of more?Bryan Fuller: Yes. But I love your interpretation! (laughs) I love the thought that she's thinking, "Fuck! I cut off my leg for no reason!"

Yep - and the unfortunate glitch for poor old Herbie.. Booby and the Sex Pistols - EMI

The other day, I put the SHMs of Page One and Our Thing on repeat for several hours (sans alternate takes). Thoroughly addictive music (in these new editions).
-
At first, I just tore up and dumped the slipcases, wondering why the music sounded so flat and lifeless. Years later, I threw the RVG beer coasters in the trash as well. It's where most of them belong.

Thanks for putting me on to In Pursuit of Blackness. I had previously dismissed Joe's later Milestone albums as fluff. Those three tracks with the band Larry mentions are especially good. I ordered a copy of the 90s In Pursuit of Blackness/ Black Is the Color twofer yesterday.

The very first batch of US RVG's (1999 I think, not sure how many, I'm not at home at present) came in cardboard slipcases - not sure how many had the covers (probably the first run of the first issue) - above is the slipcase cover Interesting, thanks for that. Same here in Europe (first batch of RVGs with 1999 remastering). On the back in the reproduction of the back artwork of the CD the artist's photo was replaced by a photo of RVG .

Oscar Peterson album for those who don't like much OP
erwbol replied to Larry Kart's topic in Recommendations
My experience with O.P. is limited to his work with Ben Webster on Verve in the fifties. I never realised he is so divisive, but Ben is the draw for me on those records anyway. In the recent past, I've upgraded Soulville and Ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson to APO hybrid SACD, and next time will try to focus on O.P. more. -
"Based on the 8 CD set compiled and produced by Orrin Keepnews." Same sound quality? Seems likely. Why waste a bag of money on a vinyl edition of a fifteen year old CD set?
