  1. There is no SHM of Street of Dreams. I wish there was! The HD Tracks download which uses the same Bernie Grundman transfers sounds much better than the McMaster, though. So much so that I now find the McMaster, one of those 20bit SBM Connoisseurs, hard to listen to. (I didn't like the RVG of any album with Larry Young on it.)

  3. He's browsing Zeppelin. Looking for boots and walking out of the door with a stack under his arm without paying?
  4. Well, yes and no. Our ears find 2nd harmonic distortion to be rather pleasing for some reason. Adding a bit of that into the signal can create a sense of 'excitement'. It's why we still like vacuum tubes. But vinyl is an extremely limited medium, especially in the low-end. Exactly. Second order harmonic distortion is pleasing to the ear. It's an argument I've tried to make in past conversations to no avail here. And it's the main reason why I find the "high resolving" argument when it comes to tubes and LP's so odd. Not to mention the fact that some folks get a little uppity when you mention the distortion that is introduced. I personally prefer the cold, clean sound of digital. Not to mention the wider dynamic range. IIRC, and you can correct me if I'm wrong, vinyl is limited on both the lower and upper ends. I think you are right about that, Scott. Vinyl being limited up at the top and bottom. The distortion is what creates, the sense of "warmth", right? So I think when you read things at the Hoffman forums and here about people who like DCC and CD's like that being warm, they like that distortion being introduced. Interesting. Is distortion always what creates the warmth, whatever stage it is introduced? Recording, mastering or playback through a certain amp or speakers? Like, when Marantz amps are supposed to sound warmer than NAD amps, what creates that extra warmth? I find that my new Dali Ikon 5 MK2 speakers which are supposed to be very good and well integrated in the highs and mids also add a pleasing warmth to those mids when connected to my old NAD amp. More than I remember from my old Tannoy speakers which I got rid of years ago, and so have to go on memory.
  5. From memory, the piano sounded buried on the Walsh Connoisseur, the two basses kind of muddled. The RVG has ridiculous white hot boosted highs and sounds kind of pumped up in the lower frequencies. The Mosaic box sounded clear and natural. Piano and basses clearly audible and separate from each other. Like the other two releases were compensating for a problem that wasn't there after all. All of this from memory as I no longer own the Connoisseur and RVG. I just remember strongly disliking both.
  6. Champions League playoffs tonight. Manchester United - Club Brugge. Should be worth watching.
  7. I was able to download the 2000 DSD remaster (SRCS-9709; first mini-LP, thereafter jewel case) of E.S.P. and I can now understand why Wilder revisited that title for another DSD remaster in 2006. The 2000 DSD is ridiculously shrill. Miles' trumpet is so piercing it hurts your ears. It's just too much. Could be how it was recorded? Like for Kind of Blue where according to Wilder they had to tone Miles' trumpet down. The Complete Columbia Album Collection version has a bit more of the top end intact compared to the 2006 DSD, but in other respects I believe I might prefer the 2006 DSD included on the Blu-spec CD2.
  8. On date of pre-order. With PayPal you will be charged immediately. With credit card your transaction will be authorized and thus charged.
  9. thnx for sharing your impressions - could you be a little more specific reg your listening experiences reg Miles Smiles, Sorcerer and Nefertiti (aka masters used - are these the 20Bit Mark Wilder remasters featured in Miles Davis Quintet 1965-'68: The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings and loudness etc) ? Listening to the Blu-spec CD2 of Miles Smiles (2000 remaster, remix) on my current speakers instead of headphones I appreciate the detailed spacious sound with a nice shimmer on top from the cymbals. Definitely my preferred version. A pleasant surprise as this title will not be reissued my MFSL. For Sorcerer and Nefertiti the MFSLs with the quite different original mixes. (I believe the Miles Smiles remix was not a radical departure from the original anyway.)
  10. Bump......... The 1963-66 box? I haven't yet bought Andrew and Compulsion on SHM, but you will definitely want to keep hold of the big box for Smoke Stack and Judgment at least. Both are clearly much better on the Mosaic than the BN Works and RVG reissues. I do like the BN Works of both Black Fire and Point of Departure, but for the other two the rolled off top of the BN Works really showed on these hornless dates. Just like for Speak Like A Child and Happenings compared to the SHMs. A lot missing at the top of the spectrum. (The Mosaic big box was mastered by Malcolm Addey, like the Mosaic Select 16 and Passing Ships.) At the other end of the sixties, Lift Every Voice sounds very good on SHM, much better than the lifeless McMaster Connoisseur. One of my most played SHMs. I'd start there.
  11. I'm not sure the horn section adds much. I'd rather just hear the trio. I dug the horn section. Thought they added some interesting textures. But I certainly can see how others might prefer the music "stripped down." You can get that same trio -- less the horns -- on En Route. I haven't gotten 'round to that one yet. I didn't care for the Rolling Stones cover and House of the Rising Sun.
  12. I also didn't know what to say, but now I realise I should have posted earlier. When my father had cancer sometimes people you expected support from hardly reacted at all for whatever reason. I'm very sorry to hear your cancer is not curable.
  13. Some obscure Monk here, but bear with Kenny, or see the list on page 563-69 of Kelley's Monk biography: "Let's Ruin One" "Outmuscled By Kenny" "Dreamland" (this one good as it is) "Erroneous" "Dysfunctional" "I Won't Be able To Follow You" (standard) "My Hair Is Awful Messy" "A Merrier April Fools' Day" "Portrait Of A Dunce"
  14. When did you last see Lovano, Head Man? Folkart and Bird Songs are good recent albums. Think I'll put Folkart on now.
  15. ScoLoHoFo also had a different feel to it, but it was very good imo. Past Present will be different still.
  16. What other great albums do you guys no longer have in your collection or do you plan on not buying? Awfully relevant.
  17. Henderson Hino. I almost bought a copy on amazon.de for €30 last year (third party). Glad I didn't. One Japanese album that I will be surprised to see re-issued soon is Cecil Taylor's Akisakila (2002 remaster). At least that's what I tell myself. I paid through the nose for a mint copy of that one.
  18. New John Scofield release with Joe Lovano, Larry Grenadier, and Bill Stewart. Past Present on Impulse! Release date September 25th. SHM-CD October 7th here. Short interview with Montreal Gazette. Tracklist: SlinkyChap DanceHangoverMuseumSeason CreepGet ProudEnjoy the Future!Mr. Puffy Great! I've already got a ticket for their concert at the Bimhuis in November.
  19. "Fluffy" "Hairdo's Back In Town" "Gorelick's Gallop" "Fuck's Sake"

I just noticed this clown plays real jazz venues. The Blue Note. October 29th through November 1st. $45 or $75 reservation. Christ!
  21. Also sort of vacuous a lot of the time.
  22. I tried to play the remaining tracks of The Epic, but the dog started howling.
  23. Previewed the first four tracks of The Epic this morning. Couldn't really hold my attention.
  24. The second quintet DVD has one extra track, Walkin', that was cut from the Karlsruhe footage for the disc's addition to the first bootleg series volume, though it is still listed in the end credits. I never understood why this happened.
