Your First Mosaic Set Purchased
pryan replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
About three years ago I bought the Lee Morgan set after it went on last chance. There were about ten left when I called. -

J.J. Johnson 2-part radio special this Wed & Thurs
pryan replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Nice show, listening right now. I agree with Baker, that album w/ Freddie (J.J. INC) is pretty awesome. -
I agree with this stance also. It's interesting to note the appeal, however, that the BN label has for some artists -- the mystique of the BN of old perhaps helps to generate this attraction.

So, what do you drink, Tap, bottled, import????
pryan replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Tap, through a Brita filter, although when the filter expires I'm not against drinking water straight from the tap -- straight, no filter, if you will. B) -
I think there's going to be a lot of people trying on some "Hi Heel Sneakers", courtesy of the Blue Mitchell Mosaic.

Actually, Gordon Sinclair Jr. writes for the Winnipeg Free Press.

Currently, I'm reading volume 1 of a biography on John A. Macdonald, Canada's first Prime Minister. It's entitled THE YOUNG POLITICIAN; the author is Donald Creighton.

Any chance that fellow board members will be able to listen to this online?

From my folks, I received the Tristano/Konitz/Marsh Mosaic. This one's going to keep me busy for some time.

I also live in an area where it can become quite frigid, but have yet to experience any problems after leaving CDs in the vehicle.

disc 2: 1- Sounds like some of the jams on the BITCHES BREW box. Sax solo didn't move me much, but I like the electric piano spot (Chick Corea, perhaps?). Cool vamp with the sax contributing mainly to the rhythmic aspect - love those stacatto notes. 2- Nice sparse setting, lots of room for the soloists to develop. The same background figure might be limiting to some but these soloists thrive, especially the trombone. 3- I'm guessing this is from the 70s. The vocals weaving "in and out" of each other work better than the unison parts. 4- This is one tune to chill to. I like the bass out front. No hurry in getting to where they are going - the antithesis of today's world. 5- Great joyous opening and ending for that matter. Pianist has that Teddy Wilson thing going on. Gruff-sounding Prez influenced tenor. 6- Konitz and Marsh for sure (can't wait for Santa to bring me that Mosaic); not sure about the pianist, 'cuz I haven't heard Tristano before, but it could very well be him or someone strongly influenced by him. Not sure about the rest of the big band. 7- Those ensemble passages sound incredibly challenging to play. Lots of stuff going on here. 8- Prez with Basie, live recording. Typical outstanding solo from Lester, nice to hear him really stretch out in this setting. More please! 9- "Dexterity". Sounds like Sonny Rollins, those repititive figures and some of the licks sound Rollinsesque. Drummer could be Billy Higgins, not sure on the bassist. 10- Not sure what to say about this one. 11- Sounds like Weather Report. I'm doubting that's Wayne Shorter, however. Really digging this. So much stuff going on but everything co-exists perfectly.

Much thanks for the tunes, Organissimo. Best of the season to you also! -
Happy birthday, Jim!

Disc 1: 1- Very nice piano intro. It does sound like a Monk tune in the intro, the head is something different, however. Horace Silver? Some of the licks the pianist plays definitely remind me of Horace. Could be from the 70s or 80s, the horns have a more modern sound about them. The Brecker bros.? Like the tenor solo slightly more than the trumpet. Interesting tune. 2- Not sure what that one was all about. Good groovy vamp, though. Almost good. 3- Really liked this selection. The rhythm section really locks in and creates a dance-like bounce that the soloists seem to take to. Solos are truly enhanced (but also excellent in their own right) by the superb bass and drums combo. 4- Could have easily been a monotonous tune with that same bass figure throughout. The changing background passages/ensemble shouts and the high-flying trumpeter helped to sustain the excitement. 5- Very soulful singing; the only stuff I've heard like this is Etta Jones sitting in with Stitt and Jug. I dig it. 6- The string arrangement was very nicley done, sparse yet there when needed. Don't recognize the vocalist but the relatively straightforward reading was highlighted by her clear tone and phrasing. 7- Monk tune, nice interaction between the sax and piano. 8- Changes sound familiar, the musicians do not. Very intrigued to find out who the tenor player is, he incoporates a lot of different influences in his way of playing. 9- Fun stuff. There's actually a shape to the vocals, they tell a story, not just random words as I thought after the first listen. 10- Baby Dodds? Liked it, nice shifting groove. 11- Wartime song. Judging by the sound, this one's really old. 12- I'm going to guess the AEC, their impressions of what war is like. A very "visual"-like piece, especially the massive cymbal explosions near the 5:00-5:30 mark. 13- Woody Herman's band, even though I'm ashamed to say I have none of his stuff. An early Getz on the tenor solo, very nice. Not sure on the second soloist but he cooks too. Woody himself as the third soloist. I dig this one a lot. 14- "Almost Like Being In Love" Disciple of Prez. Quinichette? Getz perhaps, but earlier on in his career. Even could be Richie Kamuca. Hard to say. 15- Bass player seems kind of static to me, his lines don't have that propelling aspect that this tune needs. The congas don't add much, other than clutter. Excellent vibes solo and good exchanges with the piano. Should know the name of this tune.

Sonny Stitt, "Live at the Left Bank"
pryan replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Recommendations
I, too, acted on Jim's recommendation and did not regret my decision one bit. If this album doesn't get your adrenaline flowing, nothing will. I only wish the album didn't end with that fade out of Sonny playing the opening to "C Jam Blues"; it leaves me wanting more, dammit!
