I just have the comp. of Billie and Lester entitled, A MUSICAL ROMANCE, and it has most assuredly whetted my appetite for more (hence the thread started by yours truly in the discography section). But, I just might have to scrounge/save up some cash, bite the bullet, and go for the big set. It sounds to good to pass up.

I choose the Groove Holmes; unfortunately, I'm the only one so far who's picked it.

Jlhoots and Rooster - Dan's post describes the process well. No need for more discussion on this thread, just PM Dan and he will tell you all the details, if you catch my drift...

Hey Ubu, have you ordered from this place (the one in your link) before? The only thing I can get to come up is the form to fill out to obtain a catalogue.

Scott, a most excellent gift from your wife. I'm seriously considering the Tristano/Konitz/Marsh set myself as an upcoming purchase. I have LEE KONITZ W/ WARNE MARSH single album on Koch Jazz, and enjoy it immensely. I'm pretty sure I've read comments from Jim Sangrey saying that this set is vital for those interested in any of these three musicians. I wouldn't describe the LEE KONITZ W/ WARNE MARSH album as either east or west coast and not totally unique either. You just kind of have to hear it for yourself. It's got two "beboppers" in Kenny Clarke and Oscar Pettiford, as well as Sal Mosca on piano, and Billy Bauer on guitar. This set, from browsing the discography, also has a good variety of settings, from solo piano to live club dates to tenor/bass/drum trios (w/ Paul Chambers, no less!) I'd go for this also because of the fact that it will, most likely, go OOP before the two selects that you mentioned. I believe Larry Kart wrote the liner notes as well.

On ESPN James said he would split his loyalties between his new team and Nike 50/50. That's surprising, Catesta, I figured he'd be leaning moreso in Nike's favor, maybe to the tune of 80-20 or 90-10.

I agree re: the Eager disc. Still haven't read all of the notes yet. Honestly, when I saw the album I thought it was a double, just because of the overall size. Great notes and sound too. Love that first session with Twardzik...

Yes, that third set listed seems to be something that I would want, for now anyway. It says "Complete 1937-1946". Now I just have to figure out how to order it. It doesn't list a price when you click on the item. PD- I'd love to get that Billie set but it's just too much for me right now. I think I'll have to settle for the 2 disc comp. of that set, in the meantime.

Fair enough, I won't order that set. Chuck, or anyone, what is the best way to acquire the complete Prez-Lady Day recordings, with alternate takes? I've heard there was a set out there, either on LP or CD.

While browsing the recent Cadence, I noticed a listing for this set on the Jazz Factory label. The description reads 2CDs, 42 cuts. I thought I read somewhere that this material took up 3 CDs, or maybe I'm mistaken and it was actually 3 LPs. So my question is this: Does this Jazz Factory release contain all of the tracks, or just the masters? Also, is Jazz Factory a "shady" label (ie. not a legitimate company)? Thanks in advance.

Oops, thanks for the correction Chuck. I figured just because I hadn't heard of the other two musicians, Jimmy Gourley on guitar (who has a wonderful Kenny Burrell-like conception) and Jamil Nasser on bass, that they were French also. Never assume anything.... -_-

Thanks very much to you too, Chuck, and have an excellent trip. That's exciting news about the Marsh release; please let us know when it's about to come out.

Are you serious? I haven't heard anything about Anthony (although I'm not the NBA fan that I used to be) but comparing James, no matter how good of a high school player he was, to either of those two legends is ridiculous. This high school to the NBA stuff is VERY risky, no matter how high you're supposed to go (I see James did indeed go no. 1). Although I guess for Lebron he's OK because of the endorsement deal. BUT, on a strictly basketball/playing with the big boys basis, for every Kobe and KG there's thousands of guys who never really get off the bench, so to speak. I wish Lebron the best, but I hope he doesn't take the hype too seriously, and hope he invests that Nike money.

Shrdlu - Check out Prez' last session, which was recorded in Paris and, aptly, is out on the "Jazz in Paris" series on Universal. Done mainly with French musicians (although the wonderful Kenny Clarke is on drums), this session shows that Lester still could convey intensely emotional statements, even at the VERY tail end of his career. His phrases may be shorter in length and his tone a bit more "tired", but it's still Prez and his artistry shines through just as brightly as on some of the more well-known sessions. Highly recommended.

Interesting comments so far. I think the fact that I'm a history major will help me to better understand these tracks (ie. pop sounding tunes with corny lyrics) within the context of the depression era. I've noticed those slimline cases, in some cases, Mosaic and otherwise, to hold the cds very tightly. I wonder why that is? I expect, and hope, that the set will arrive tommorow (they usually take about a week).

I just started the newly revised bio of Bessie Smith, entitled Bessie, penned by "our own" Chris Albertson. I've only read the author's note and the first chapter, but I'm really digging it so far.

No kidding. Although I don't really have many Japanese discs (one, I think), I may be tempted to pull the trigger on some of those Dexter BNs, considering Cuscuna's rate of releasing Gordon's BN output (in better sound, anyhow) in the U.S.

That's Trollope, Thackeray, Dickens, Carlyle, Hardy, Conrad, who else am I missing? What about the author of Wuthering Heights, Emily Bronte (sp?)?

43 or 44, going on 12. B)

Mnytime, I think there is some duplication of the Holiday Columbia set (only two sessions, though). Here's the link to the discography, check it out for yourself: Berigan Mosaic discography

I'm legal in Canada (which is where I live) and numerous other places in the world, just not yet in the Excited States of America. Doncha watch those spelling bee competitions on the tube sometimes; those kids are really young, I could never compete with those guys (and gals).

Now we simply have to hope that a series of disasters does not befall our individual orders... No doubt. This is good news, though. This set should be well worth the wait!
