  1. Thanks for clearing up some of the misconceptions that I had, Kevin. That said, I think Chris has every right to post whatever opinions he may have on any subject, Wynton included. If another member went on and on about subject "x", all the time, would you react in such a manner as you have in the above postings? I seriously doubt it. Also, I don't really think Chris is "obsessed with posting negative stuff about WM", as you say. Nowhere do I recall seeing Chris starting a topic denouncing Marsalis or his philosophies or his musical output. He merely responds to certain topics, started by others on the board. Enough speaking for Chris, he's more than capable of doing that for himself. I stand by my statement that your responses were childish, or at the very least immature. I could take the time of pointing certain passages out that highlight my point, but I really would rather spend more time discussing the music.
  2. Well, it all comes down to a one game, winner-takes-all game seven. It doesn't get much more exciting than this in sports, ANY sport. Maybe the ABC will get more than five viewers tommorow.
  3. Thanks for posting those pics, Chris, very cool indeed! (Is the the same poster who was accused of not posting ANYTHING positive? Hey Kevin, check out this thread.)
  4. That set of masters looks particularly appealing to me, considering the relatively low amount of Bird I do have in my collection. Add another one to the list... Re: the strings sessions, I must agree with Lon and Brad, there's some marvellous playing by Bird on that disc.
  5. Wow, ya go away for a few days and things go a bit nutty. That's OK, though, there's always room for a bit of nuttiness in the world, as long as no one REALLY gets hurt. But seriously, here's my take on the argument between Kevin and Chris (even though I should really shutup to avoid exacerbating the situation): Kevin has a personal connection to some "higher ups" at Blue Note and respects both Michael Cuscuna and Tom Evered. These people at BN were, most likely, involved in some shape or form in bringing Marsalis to the label and thus Kevin believes such a decision was intelligent, both on a financial and artistic basis (please Kevin, tell me if any of this is false in any way) for the company and the artist. Chris enters the fray posting his honest opinions on Wynton and his upcoming album. Kevin disagrees and things sail out of control. I think, more than anything, this has to do with BN, the record label. If Wynton had signed with Verve (now that's opening another can of worms, I know), I seriously doubt Kevin would be so defensive in his (hypothetical) response(s) to Chris. Kevin, like probably many posters here, has an emotional attachment to BN of the "good ol' days" (assuming that's the 50s and 60s, when hardbop was in its "heyday"). Wynton, in his mind, is a good player, trumpeter, etc. who plays, in his (Kevin's) own words, "good Jazz". So, to sum up, a good player like Wynton, signing a contract to a GREAT label is cause for (at the very least) cautious optimism, in Kevin's mind (again, Kevin, if I'm wrong, please correct me). This signing, coupled with the fact that Kevin personally knows those in charge at BN, caused a most defensive, albeit somewhat childish and rude response, toward Chris' comments.
  6. I picked this up about five days ago and have found it to be just magnificent. The first time through, I'll admit, seemed to be repetitive because of the many blues tunes. The second spin, though, things really began to click for me, the solos, vocals, asides, emotions, etc. just seemed so PURE and unforced. And Louis is one guy that I've only just recently noticed, whose playing and signing, his whole art of conveying what HE has to say, is just majestic in its simplicity of delivery, yet profound in its effect on listeners. Prez is the only musician I can think of who's similar in this "majestic" aspect (I guess that's why he's called the President). Anyway, thanks for choosing this Jim, a good recommendation as always. I look forward to many more playings of PLAYS W.C. HANDY in the future.
  7. Here's a couple: Organissimo: WAITING FOR THE BOOGALOO SISTERS Quartet Out: LIVE AT THE MEATHOUSE
  8. Sorry, St. V, it was late and I posted hastily. Still, I think it's tough to pass such a judgment (as yours) after only one listen. I have nothing against DOO BOP, although it's not on the list of my favorite Miles albums. If you read my post correctly you will notice that I say nothing negative about DOO BOP, only that I find it hard for you to compare the two albums.
  9. I can't say I really like either team. But I am cheering for the Ducks because a local guy (Mike Leclerc) plays for them. I'd also like to see Adam Oates and Steve Thomas win their first cup. As one friend mentioned to me before the final two teams were decided, wouldn't it be ironic if the Devils a team Wayne Gretzky once, back in the 80s, called a "Mickey Mouse" club, took on the Mighty Ducks, who are of course owned by the Disney Corp.
  10. I've seen this one around locally, but have never had the urge to pull the trigger. With all the positive talk lately about the latest albums by tenor greats Teddy Edwards and Von Freeman, this one (THE GIFT) seems to have taken a "back seat". So, what's the word on this one?
  11. So these negative comments are based on your "sampling" of the album on some website. That you can even compare this to DOO BOP, and say it's basically just as good or bad, seems absurd to me. Such a comparison is impossible (IMO), because most importantly, YOU HAVEN'T EVEN HEARD THE ALBUM IN ITS ENTIRETY YET. I really think it's a lot better than what your rather hasty comments indicate. Ed, HARD GROOVE surely is a fun album. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts.
  12. I'm with you on that one, Chris. Me too.
  13. I'd have to agree with Lon on this one. The old site was far "cleaner" in appearance; the front page, at least, was easy to navigate. The new one seems to have too much stuff all together. I guess the info is slightly faster to access, but that's about it.
  14. Well, I finally found it (HARD GROOVE) today and it was in the jazz section. I've only spun it once, so I'll try to save the majority of my comments for later, when I've had some time to "digest" it. But on first glance, at least, this album surprised me in a good way. There's some manipulation of Hargrove's trumpet via electronics that may not appeal to some listeners, but I think for the most part it's done skillfully and within the context of the particular tune(s). Another thing that stood out, to me, is that this album does seem "genuine", not at all a toss off effort to branch out into more popular musics. Roy's vision here is pure and simple: he wants to do his own thing, having fun being a top priority. More on the music later, and if anyone else has this please chime in with your comments: positive, negative, or otherwise.
  15. Glad to see you received it, Catesta - sooner than I expected. I got your payment yesterday. Tuneage for the past couple of days: Louis Armstrong: COMPLETE HOT FIVES AND SEVENS(discs 2&4), PLAYS W.C. HANDY Kenny Dorham: UNA MAS Bessie Smith: THE ESSENTIAL Roy Hargrove: HARD GROOVE on deck: Joe Henderson: STATE OF THE TENOR, vol. 1&2
  16. About the first paragraph, I was just taking a guess at what the situation was. And I definitely wasn't "insinuating" that you were "taking advantage" of someone else on this board. If anything, by finding it cheap, and offering it to someone else, you're doing that person a favor. Lastly, you don't have to prove your loyalty to the board by saying how you offer stuff up here first, while taking shots at other posters ("unlike many other posters", in your words) who may decide to post their sale/trade items on two or more sites. People can advertise where and when they want. I don't want to start a long-winded argument here, it's just that your first response to my "why are you parting with this" question was somewhat vague and I (perhaps too hastily) tried to uncover some facts. Your right, it is none of my business.
  17. Actually, I haven't heard the discs at all. The set is on hold for me in a cd shop. Maybe I should listen to them first, but I've already been talking to Dmitry about a trade. Wish he would respond... Umm, okay, I don't really understand the deal and maybe it's none of business, but I'm inferring from your comments that you've found this set at a used store for ultra-cheap and are offering it to Dmitry. Still, couldn't Dmitry just buy his own set - it is still in print. And about the music, do yourself a favor and give these sides a spin or fifty. There's some great music on this, as I previously mentioned.
  18. Congrats, Mike. Your book is on my short-list of ones to read next (outside of school related books, that is). I'm looking forward to hearing that show (finally), Ghost. Damn, unjustified war.
  19. Not having seen all, or even most of the movies listed, I still went ahead and voted . I chose THE BIRDS for its sheer horror of the hair-raising variety.
  20. Neither have I; I'm really hoping this is in Canadian stores tommorow and will try my darndest not to take the plunge on the complete set (ie. all four cds), and just go for either the Friday or Saturday sets. If it's substantially cheaper, though, to get the complete set..... BTW, I checked out a few clips on the Legacy site and the sounds seems really good to my ears, even through the computer speakers!
  21. Anyone who doesn't have this set is missing out big time. These are the sessions that hooked me on Pres, not the early Basie recordings (although those are essential also), and dispel any notion that his playing went downhill after his ill-fated time in the army. Some AMAZING stuff in these two discs. BTW, Conn500, why are you parting with this set?
  22. All the best, Daniel. Sounds like you're going to be in a good quiet locale to write your paper; it's always a good thing to minimize the distractions.
