I just picked up the a Cy Touff Pacific Jazz Lp entitled, HIS OCTET & QUINTET. There's a tune on there called "Prez-ence", which obviously uses a Prez solo as the head. The credit reads: By Young, Touff and Kamuca (Richie, the tenor sax player on the date). Can anyone tell me where this solo is lifted from? I know I've heard it before, I just can't recall where. BTW, this technique of using Prez' solos as the themes of songs is used elsewhere as well, such as "Blues by Lester". This 'tune', as many of you know, was taken from Lester's solo on "Pound Cake", from May of 1939. I've heard it on Warne Marsh's JAZZ EXCHANGE, VOL 1., but I'm sure it's been recorded elsewhere. So another question would be, are there any other instances of this happening with other Prez solos, besides the two already mentioned? Thanks in advance.

Something tells me a few lads picked up ANGEL EYES based on the cover alone. Yowza!

Glad to hear you like the Eager, catesta. I anxiously await to receive my package from Michigan, which includes the Eager and Roscoe Mitchell's, SNURDY MCGURDY AND HER DANCIN' SHOES.

In my opinion, Hank was an MF, but hey that's just one man's opinion, right? His playing, at least on the stuff that I've heard, has been uniformly or perhaps consistently, good. Of course he had some sessions that weren't as "on" as others, but his consistency in producing marvellously inventive lines, coupled with a great tone and style of phrasing is what stands out to me. He was, for the most part, a "licks" based player, but so are a LOT of people. It was his ability to come up with the licks at oppurtune times in a tune, as well as the stringing together of ideas that made him such a fantastic tenor man. BTW, if you want to check out some Mobley that's slightly different (in terms of his soloing, etc.) try and find BREAKTHROUGH!, with Cedar Walton, Sam Jones, Billy Higgins, and another reed player who's name I can't remember at the moment. Jsngry recommended this on the other BB and I found it to be quite a revelation.

Sounds like a sweet find, Jim. Dammit, this just further underscores your point about regularly checking Dusty Groove! I've still fought off the temptation. No more "triumphant" stories like this, OK?

When this disc first came out, I was very hesitant and figured this was just another attempt to duplicate Diana Krall's success. I got the e-mails from BN, and listened to some of the clips; nice voice, I thought, but nothing that really made me get up out of my chair or anything. Of course, as everyone knows, this album became quite popular, and won several awards. I admit, I still haven't picked this up, but plan to in the near future, just to hear it for myself, to see what all the fuss is about. Along with your vote, please honestly comment on the album itself, its relative merits or lack thereof.

Bessie Smith reborn
pryan replied to Christiern's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I ordered a copy from one of the local bookstores; they said it should arrive about three weeks. -
One must applaud Bill Walton for his unbiased and objective broadcasting . Seriously, the Spurs didn't need to have any fans, Walton made up for all of them. And what a numbskull that guy is, always overstating/exagerrating things, using such sayings he made up, calling one player (I forget who), "classically trained", making him sound like a musician or something. Oh, and his new favorite, "THROW IT DOWN BIG MAN!" Ya, the Spurs did choke but the Nets really let their "stranglehold" get away as well (a 15 point lead at one time). Go Nets! If only to spite Walton (gotta love how he was dead silent at game's end).

Bud Powell: PORTRAIT OF THELONIOUS, BUD! Miles Davis: IN PERSON: FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE BLACKHAWK

Welcome, Joe M. Another superb poster from the BNBB. I used to be natbat over there, BTW (more of a lurker over there, though).
-
Well, I found both the Friday and Saturday sets today; they didn't, however, have the 4-CD (ie. all in the slipcase). Broke down and bought them separately. I've only listened to the first disc of FRIDAY... and I have to concur with what everyone has said so far. Some AWESOME playing by everyone. John L is right on with that rhythm section description; so tight and swinging, yet always perfectly interacting with the soloist. Beautiful stuff and they sound like they're having a ball too. Can't wait to hear the rest. Oh yeah, and about the notes, I think they're fine. Although I must admit I never had the originals, so all of the notes were new to me. Some wild stories about The Blackhawk itself and the nights of the recordings!

I know next to nothing about e-bay "goings on", but found something strange when looking at the bidding history for that $280 McLean set. That guy who won, at one point, was increasing his bid by 10 bucks (numerous times), even though he still had the highest bid. Why wouldn't he just wait until someone else bidded higher than him? Is he trying to intimidate the other bidders? Please, enlighten me on the subject.
-
Just saw this update on the "upcoming releases" page: "The set is expected to ship on or about June 18th." Not sure if this is "news" or not but I thought I'd post it anyways. I had heard it was supposed to ship on the 16th, but what's another two days, I guess.

Name some Blue Note cds you find overrated
pryan replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Recommendations
Are you referring to STANDARDS, released in '98? I kinda dig those sessions, even if, for the most part, they are more laid back than a typical Jimmy Smith session. Gotta love Kenny Burrell on these sides.... -
Man, you guys are making me drool! I still haven't seen this in CDN stores yet; soon I hope!

Are you a subscriber, Chaney? I recently started a subscription and thought that once you were a subscriber and the $2.50 surcharge was eliminated, then ordering cds, books, etc. wouldn't be that costly. Of course, I haven't really looked into ordering anything yet, so there may be some costs that I'm not aware of (hopefully not). I'm not a subscriber and I've not ordered from Cadence since they began this little subscribe-or-pay-extra ploy. Just my own fickle decision. You are correct though: the non-subsriber tax is waived once you subscribe. As I live in New York State, there's also sales tax. Hmmmm.... You're a subscriber? Maybe I could let you know what I'd like to order and you can do my ordering for me? And you could send me your back issues!! They're still very nice people and their service is terrific. Ah yes, the sales tax must be a bummer. But probably not as bad as the weak Canadian dollar. Although lately the dollar has improved substantially versus the U.S. dollar. I'd send the back issues to ya if I knew I wasn't going to refer back to them in the (sometimes) distant future. But I KNOW I will. It seems as though you order enough stuff from them, why not get the magazine too. After so many orders, you'll have spent as much in surcharges to equal a year's subscription.

Can't say that I "know" it, but I have passed it over at the used record store that I frequent many times, because of some bad reviews that I've read, both on this board (I think, maybe the BNBB) and on AMG.

I just received my first-ever issue of Cadence and happened to be browsing their catalog. Whatta ya know, they have a copy of this. It's listed as being on the Timeless label, #221. You can order from Cadence via a cheque or money order as well, although if you're not a subscriber to the magazine, you have to pay a $2.50 surcharge. The price for this disc is $15.

Moose - The problems you might have had with the search feature may be because you didn't set the search to search far back enough, in terms of amount of days in the past. I think there's about three settings: past 30 days, past 365 days, or any date. I know I've forgotten to use this setting correctly, and not surprisingly, couldn't find what I was looking for.

Ya wonder why Cuscuna doesn't put this out, maybe as a ultra-limited edition Conn or something like that. I mean Sonny and Dexter, even when drunk, must still have more to say, musically, than a lot of musicians. Even if it (the entire session) was released purely as a historical document, I'd jump all over it. BTW, to those who have heard the one track, what's it like?
-
Thank you, sir.

Some great thoughts there, Jim. I've kinda been wondering about his most recent albums; I'll have to check them out sooner or later. Sidewinder, is that twofer the one w/ THE SOUND OF SONNY and THE FREEDOM SUITE? I have that and it is indeed excellent. That's on deck for later tonite, thanks for reminding me.
