What vinyl are you spinning right now??
Homefromtheforest replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Really!? That's rare. I went through two visually mint copies of this one until I gave up and got a mint Japanese issue on Sony that has no clicks or pops whatsoever. For some reason I had better luck with my UK issue of "four compositions" which only has a few isolated pops... -
Outside of Dolphy my favorite bass clarinet players are Louis Sclavis and Michel Portal. I've seen some monster live shows from Sclavis in the 90s where he left my jaw on the floor!

Jef Gilson "new call from France" (Saba tree, Germany) Nathan Davis "the hip walk" (Saba tree, Germany) Globe Unity "sun" (Saba tree, Germany) And currently: Tony Oxley "four compositions for sextet" (CBS realm jazz, UK). By far the cleanest realm jazz title I've ever had...very few clicks which is nice considering I've owned so many noisy titles on this label over the years. -

Miles Davis "workin" (prestige, USA). A rare find a few years back...an original review copy in pristine condition..not a click to be heard which is rare for prestige pressings! -

Tony Oxley "four compositions for sextet" (CBS, UK) Randy Burns "of love and war", "evening of the musician" (ESP, USA) Freddie Hubbard "breaking point" (blue note, King Japan) It had some pops and clicks and the seller claimed it was stone mint so I used that as a reason to return it. It's a cool record don't get me wrong, but I really think the musical quality doesn't match the price tag. -
Years ago I used to buy records from a hoarder/collector who lived in a house literally full of records. Between piles and boxes of records were narrow pathways to the kitchen or bathroom, etc. Needless to say he was not married! While on the topic of vinyl obsessives - a few days ago I met a local jazz collector who as recently as 7 years ago bought records from a former record exec and was getting some major heavy blue notes for like $13 each. Like $13 for BLP1550, etc. Then I see his copy of Joe Harriott's "movement" on lansdowne. Holding it in my hand I ask what did you pay for this? "Oh $5 because the record exec didn't like it so much"! I was just a tad jealous :0

I used to own "origination" years ago; I paid an arm and a leg for it but when I got it the music did not really match the price tag so to speak and I ended up returning it to the fellow in Japan I bought it from. Still have a nice CD though that I made from the record before returning it... -

Capping the night off with something different: Tony Scott "djangerbali" (Saba, Germany). An old favorite..such a great album! -

A bit of a blue note binge tonight: Art Blakey "the big beat" (47w63rd, stereo) Horace Silver trio "with art blakey -Sabu) (Lexington, mono) Horace Silver "blowin the blues away" (47w63rd, mono) Grachan Moncur III "evolution" (New York, stereo) -
Well congrats it's a great album...even though I got a good price on my pristine copy many years ago I'm sure you still paid considerably less

"Phase III" is a heck of a find!!! Wow...

Yeah it's definitely a unique WTF ECM piece! I'm a big fan of the label so this will be a prized possession along with my gatefold "free at last" with music booklet insert... -

Just Music "s/t" (ECM, Germany). After owning the "regular" German pressing for over 20 years I could not resist a recent opportunity to buy this rare "pre-release" version with doodle artwork and a red(!) ECM label! -

How is that album? Is the Globe Unity track similiar to the version on the SABA album? -
That is very true regarding the Irene quotient on "futurities". It's actually one of my least favorite from the 80s though I can't say it's entirely because of Irene... My faves from the 80s Hat titles are "prospectus" and "morning joy".

I wonder if the recording quality on this forthcoming release is better then "lost in June" which was just sourced from an audience tape...

Haboob "s/t" (horzu/reprise, Germany). Can't ever get enough Jimmy Jackson here....love his stuff on various Embryo and Amon Duul ll albums and Waldron's "the call"..this particular album is an obscure project headed by Jackson. -

Jeffcrom I admire your patience! In my teens/early 20s I thought 45s were the coolest but now I find them a royal pain in the butt. Maybe in 20 years after my kids have grown up I'll have the time to enjoy the 1000 singles I have collecting dust currently They're mainly indie/punk rock stuff though...very little "jazz" outside of some early Nels Cline singles, etc Right now: Magma "s/t" (Philips, France). In a magma mood tonight after buying tickets today for their April appearance in Vancouver. I last saw Christian Vander here in Vancouver at the Glass Slipper with his jazz piano trio around 1994 and interviewed him for a fanzine I produced around that time. That show was great, but I'm excited to see him with Magma finally! -
