If you are interested in the Kikuchi album then I would also recommend "out of chaos" by Kosuke Mine which is virtually the same band. I have both the LPs and they're great.

Splendid choice! The "Nunnu" album on Blue Master Special, which features the same musicians (plus Juhani Aaltonen, Heikki Sarmanto, etc.), is another great one from the same period. You know I think that's the one album from this vintage I still need with Vesala! Have pretty much everything else(nana, I'm here, hot lotta, ode to Marilyn, etc) but one day I'll have to get "nunnu" as well. I have heard it though and it is a nice enough album... -

Tuohi Klang "penselmann hits" (UFO, Finland). Killer 1972 album with Edward Vesala on drums. Eero Koivistien "wahoo" (RCA, Finland) another killer album with Vesala on drums..albeit in a more funky/rock fusion vein. -

Beverly Glenn Copeland "s/t" (GRT, Canada) a nice obscure jazzy folk(or is it folky jazz?) album with some good Canadian players like Lenny Breau and Don Thompson.. Freddie Hubbard "open sesame" (blue note, King Japan) Motohiko Hino "sailing ice" (TBM, Japan) Great album! Wish the sound quality was a bit better... -
Ray Russell "Dragon Hill" - any thoughts?

All the CBS realm jazz Lps I've had over the years have been noisy; even the ones that looked flawless under bright light! A rare case of a label that I've given up on vinyl-wise and am perfectly happy with all the past CD reissues I own of the records on this label such as Riley, Russell, Oxley, etc. The one exception is my Japanese issue of "the baptized traveller" that has not a single audible pop or click. Have not played my "dragon hill" CD in ages but recall really enjoying it. And as Clifford correctly pointed out this album isn't nearly as wild as later efforts... -

The copy of this one I play the most is the 1976 UK pressing which had US imported sleeve and UK vinyl and was (like that whole series) taken from an original master copy. Only £2.99 when I bought it and still sounds great ! Great sound is all that counts! I don't think I paid more then $50 for my copy which has mint vinyl but I know many UK pressings can sound quite nice. I have an original UK issue of "shape of jazz to come" and it definitely rivals my bullseye US original in terms of sound. That said, all my records have been sounding amazing lately since I upgraded my amp and speakers recently. -

Oliver Nelson "the blues and the abstract truth" (impulse, USA). Brilliant sounding stereo copy...a masteerpiece. I think this is the very first press with AM-PAR labels and metal sculpture inner gatefold photo. Ralph Towner "solstice" (ECM, Germany) an old favorite... Two "supergroup" albums from different eras! -

How is that one? I've often wondered about how it sounds without Vesala's usual cohort on board It's certainly different from the likes of Twet, Live at Remont. As the titles imply it has a heavier and altogether richer soundscape. It lacks the sheer visceral impact these other titles have and is perhaps closer to ECM releases like "Ode to the death of jazz". It's well worth hearing. Have not played this album nor "twet" or "live at remont" in years...a good reminder. And will you be seeing Jone Takamaki, mjazzg? If so you're lucky! Jealous... -

I saw them once in Vancouver many years ago...it was a quartet with Arve Henriksen. I enjoyed it, but I distinctly recall Bill Smith of Coda and Sackville fame getting up from his seat in front of me to leave mid-concert. Guess he didn't enjoy it so much :0

The UK Fontana pressing of "eastern sounds" by Yusef Lateef for $30 Canadian in NM condition. A welcome upgrade to my late 60s/early 70s prestige issue since I'm not up for spending a few hundred on an original Moodsville issue in nice shape...

Bought my copy at the long-gone Peaches Records on Peachtree Street in Atlanta in 1978 or so. If I made a list of a dozen albums which changed the way I heard music, this would be on the list. Does your cover look like this picture? Mine is the unreadable yellow-on-white cover, which Chuck insists is not his fault. My old copy looked like this picture. Bought it at Bud's jazz in Seattle around 1991 and it opened my ears too...I was just getting into Coltrane, Mingus, Miles, Monk and Ornette a year or so prior and this album opened the door to new musical horizons for me. Now I own the French Pathe Marconi issue... -

Matthias Eick "skala" (ECM, Germany). I love this album...some really beautiful tunes here, and my wife loves it too! Saw this group live a few years ago and they were fantastic..looking forward to his next album. -
I'm likely getting all those as well plus an additional 5 or 6 more. I have all of these already on various different vinyl pressings but these CDs sound so great and are relatively cheap too so I just can't resist...plus the bonus tracks are nice to have. Glad to see "leapin and lopin" in the list; my favorite Sonny Clark. Have a nice NY USA original stereo LP and an early American CD issue but will get this SHM anyways.

Ugh there's at least 12 in that batch I want despite having them in different pressings(original, King, etc)...
