  1. Because Vancouver record stores suck! Got the Coltrane on an eBay "buy it now" from a seller who really undergraded it! One of those nice situations where a seller's "VG" is more like excellent...
  2. Now playing: John Coltrane "blue train" (blue note, mono 47 w 63rd no "r"). A recent score at $100 in really nice condition....need to do an A/B shootout with my Music Matters 33rpm reissue someday.
  3. Jealous! Truly a score indeed
  4. Record 3 of the Larry Young Mosaic box. I have all of the titles contained in this box as individual releases on both CD and album but could not resist the nice price faceofthebass gave me on this! well now that you've got two copies, I'd be happy to help you free one up! I have the CD of this and I'm perfectly content with that..it's a nice session but personally I don't like it enough to be compelled to throw $300 or so on a vinyl original!
  5. I've met/talked to Han Bennink, Peter Brotzmann, Evan Parker, Louis Sclavis, Bobo Stenson, Tomasz Stanko, Hamid Drake, William Parker, Mats Gustafsson, Barre Phillips, Eddie Prevost, John Butcher, Terje Rypdal, Ab Baars, Tristan Honsinger, Lol Coxhill, and many more and I must say I've never experienced anything unpleasant but that said I always try to be respectful and think of myself as a pretty good judge of whether to keep a conversation "short and sweet" or drag it out a bit!!
  6. Gary Peacock "voices" (Sony, Japan) Masahiko Togashi "variation" (takt, Japan)
  7. In pristine condition; original owner. Complete with all inserts and outer OBI. Bought new and never played. $100 shipped to North American addresses only.
  8. I have the King pressing of "Basra" myself...have not played it in a few years so this is a nice reminder to spin it again!
  9. Hey me too! My wife bought it for me after I gave her a not-so-subtle hint a month ago I like it...I actually find it a bit more entertaining then the rather dry Richard Cook book...
  10. And now: Egg "the polite force" (deram, UK)...I remember chancing on both this and the debut LP in absolute pristine condition at a used record store here in vancouver for about $20 each around 20 years ago. Spinning the second LP right now...first time in many years and sounds superb...I'm a sucker for early Canterbury stuff like this and Caravan, etc... Great choices! I have not played that Don Ellis album in at least 15 years but it's in my shelves. The Wheeler is one of my favorites from him..I have the vinyl of "on the corner" as well as the Columbia CD box which is a must have...
  11. Bobby Hutcherson "dialogue" (Blue Note, stereo Liberty). Wish I had a NY USA issue but my Liberty copy is super clean and actually sounds really, really good!
  12. On the topic of Frank wright and curio Japanese pressings; the Japanese version of Noah Howard's "space dimension" sounds great whereas it seems all French America pressings have some sort of mastering/pressing flaw.
  13. Nice choices...just have the Japanese CD of "mirage"...part of the PJL series that reissued a number of Japanese free jazz albums many years ago.
  14. Ka-kaw! Seahawks destroy Arizona tonight...
  15. That's a lot of good listening there! My friend bought the Clifford Jordan box and he loves it. I just spent my first of 3 Christmas celebrations at my sister's house in Ferndale, WA which is just north of Bellingham as you may know. Are you going to get time to head down to Old Town Antiques on Holly street for a little record shopping!? I used to love going there but have not had time to go there in many years...have many fond memories of record shopping in Bellingham at places like Golden Oldies, etc...
  16. I've been told the Japanese "Le nouveau jazz" is a stereo pressing. If so, is it "real" stereo? I think my copy is stereo but honestly have no idea. Catalog number is "SL-5007-AX". My copy is a white label promo and all the text on the back and inner gatefold is in Japanese. The pressing quality is pristine and not a single click is to be heard which is nice. Tonight's spins: Larry Young - record one of the Mosaic box (thanks faceofthebass!) Freddie Hubbard "the artistry of" (impulse, stereo)
  17. Nice score. Have a dead silent Japanese press of "le nouveau jazz" and only the In Situ CD version of "free jazz"...
  18. Yikes that's a big purchase!
  19. I'm from Gabon, which is 37th on the list. And apparently I drink 20% less then the average Canadian. Probably helps that I never drink hard liquor and *rarely* drink wine. I love my beer though!
  20. It's not a tape issue. You can hear Kenny Burrell play his lick exactly one revolution ahead of whats coming next. It is very, very low in volume almost buried in the noise floor. But on high sensitivity speakers you can make it out. Since Mule is the softest song on side one that is where it's most obvious. Other than that I like the way the reissue sounds, it has really nice transient snap and dynamics. that sounds like print through on the tape. Very interesting, that makes sense. They have a photo of the master tape on their website and speaking to one of the company producers that is the one they used. I wonder if it is something that occurred recently with the tape? Ok I hear it on my copy too; never noticed it before...gee thanks for pointing it out so I can be annoyed each time I play this record now At least I can only really hear it on "mule"...now I'm curious to hear an original pressing. That's a great record; I believe my copy is a later issue.
  21. I'm curious what you think about Midnight Blue if you have heard an original pressing as well. I was pretty pissed to find out there is a pressing error on the Music Matters reissue, you can hear ghosting or pre-echo on the left channel, on side 1. Really annoying and obvious on Mule. Didn't notice as during this record I was doing other stuff and it was on in the background. Will listen to this track again tonight and report. Never heard an original....
  22. Art Blakey "the big beat" (blue note, 47 w 63rd DG stereo) a minty copy found for cheap recently Kenny Burrell "midnight blue" (music matters, blue note) a good test for my new Paradigm speakers Guru Guru "hinten" (ohr, Germany) digging up some old vinyl I have not played in at least 15 years
  23. Freddie Hubbard "goin up" (blue note, 47 w 63rd mono). Not the best copy in the world but sounds nice enough and it didn't break the bank which helps...
  24. Haha yup seen that a few times...a classic!
  25. Yeah I've never done a A/B comparison between German and Japanese ECM Lps but I must say those 70s Japanese ECM issues on Trio sound quite beautiful as well...
