  1. Tonight's spins: Art Blakey "the big beat" (blue note, 47 w 63rd DG stereo) Hank Mobley "s/t" (blue note 1568, mono Japan King) Embryo "we keep on" (BASF, Germany) Spontaneous Music Ensemble "oliv" (marmalade, UK)
  2. That's certainly a great one and in my top few Wheelers as well. Love the opening track and Vesala shines throughout. Started with a USA pressing and now own a Japanese pressing. May one day try a German pressing just for comparisons sake as it is a gem...
  3. I'll only partake if this BFT comes on an Edison Cylinder...no fancy pants modern CD or download for me...and speaking of which - what in tarnation am I doing on this crazy frikken computer thingy?
  4. As I mentioned in the Listening thread the other day, Conference of the Birds sounds like shit. But I suppose that was in the air at the time. Really? How so? I have a mint German vinyl issue and it sounds excellent to me...
  5. I love the ECM sound! Sure the first few releases were more "experimental" but it's still a very credible label in my book to this day. That Leo Smith album is fantastic. Right now I am listening to "waves" by Terje Rypdal on German vinyl. Earlier was listening to my CD of it but right now the vinyl is sounding much better...I guess it helps that I have a nice little tube preamp for my turntable!
  6. Pm sent on Larry young lp box
  7. Haha..true! Last record for the night: Steve Lacy "solo at mandara" (alm, Japan w/obi)
  8. One day...seeing that dark blue label makes me cringe haha
  9. Oliver Nelson "blues & the abstract truth" (impulse stereo, div of AMPAR) with metal sculpture on inner gatefold...later issues had a photo of Oliver instead... I don't have a ton of original 1st press impulses in my collection, but this one is and it sounds superb...it's being cranked right now
  10. Freddie Hubbard "breaking point" (blue note, 70s blue label issue - the collector in me weeps and sighs). This pressing actually sounds quite good...a great session...gotta love Joe Chambers! If I see his name on a record I usually take notice...
  11. I agree! I have great sounding CDs and LPs; I also have crappy sounding CDs and LPs. As for transferring to CDR, well, I agree they sound practically the same but my biggest fear is for the CD to scratch or not play for whatever reason. Also if your music is all on your hard drive, what happens if the hard drive fails or gets corrupted?
  12. Horace Silver Trio "with art blakey and Sabu" (blue note, Lexington flat edge USA) a recent acquisition...my very first true early vintage blue note Lexington! And for a bargain price...don't think my wallet will let me pursue this collecting avenue too much Norman Connors "love from the sun" (cobblestone, USA). Inspired by felsers current BFT...out of the 3 Connors albums I own I think this is my favorite.
  13. I believe that picture was taken in Vancouver in the late 50s.
  14. If my house was burning I'd grab "bluesnik" and "destination out"...without thinking twice.
  15. So track 6 is "slewfoot"? Darn..I have that album too! Guess I don't listen to it enough...I think Norman's outfit on the cover scares me off too much
  16. Hi Noj, Sorry couldn't get proper time to listen to your BFT; I think the length scared me off a bit ! However, for what it's worth, I have that Harry Whitaker album on Baystate and think it's an absolute killer! Nice choice...
  17. Enjoying the sounds on this...is track #6 Dee Dee Bridgewater?
  18. I love that Mumps LP...I think I got my copy in the mid-90s and have played it many times. It's essentially a "Trio" album plus Albert Mangelsdorff! Tonight's spins: Art Blakey "the freedom rider" (blue note, NY USA) Dave Liebman "lookout farm" (ECM, Germany) Alvin Curran "songs and views from the magnetic garden" (ananda, Italy)
  19. A long night of listening as the kids went to bed amazingly early tonight Andrew Hill "compulsion" (Blue Note, NY USA stereo) Sonny Rollins "Newks Time" (Blue Note, King Japan stereo) Cannonball Adderley "Somethin Else" (Blue Note, 47 w 63rd mono DG w/ear, 9M) Peter Brotzmann "Nipples" (Calig, Germany black label 1st issue) On currently as I typed this and inspired by Clifford to pull it out from the shelves...indeed one of Peter's finest. Maybe I'll pull out the "More Nipples" CD on Atavastic after this!
  20. Yeah me too; forgot about Nipples!
  21. I like "hot lotta" even more then "balls" or "machine gun"...it's got this sparseness and restrained thoughtfulness/intelligence to the sound which appeals to me a bit more then the reckless abandonment of some of the early FMP efforts...
