What vinyl are you spinning right now??
Homefromtheforest replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
And now on to some newer sounds as I crack open my third beer Edward Vesala "hot lotta" (blue master, Finland) w/Brotzmann, Aaltonen, Kowald. Killer album that I haven't played in years. -
was contemplating to buy the release too - how did you like subject cd`s sound ? I bought this less than an hour ago. sorry, suspected already a delivered item - if remembering pls post a short comment in the Blue Note SHM-CD later....... Even though I have a pretty decent original stereo vinyl of this (with "ear") I ordered this SHM cd as well. Got my ship notification last week so I imagine it will arrive within the next week or so... I love all the SHM CDs I've bought so far...have about 15 already and they all sound great. Not sure what they tinkered with in the mastering, but these are some of my most "analog" sounding CDs!

Hank Mobley "no room for squares" (blue note, stereo NY USA) Freddie Redd "the connection" (blue note, 47 w 63rd DG mono) -
"Fireside chat..." and "celestial love" are some of the best sounding Saturns already in my opinion. I have the originals of both and they sound superb...helps that they were studio recordings and not those murky/distant/one microphone live recordings that appear on so many 70s saturns!

Jackie McLean's 1950's Prestige Recordings
Homefromtheforest replied to Late's topic in Recommendations
When I was making deep dive into jazz in the 90s I found the Penguin guide to jazz very useful and often agreed with Morton and Cook's assessments. They felt his Prestige work was good but not quite "there" like his Blue Notes were. I have at least 4 or 5 of his Prestige albums and tend to agree. They're good/nice but not particularly amazing like some of his 60s blue notes. -
Yeah but really who knows with records...they all tend to fluctuate according to who's looking at the time, etc. Maybe this CD reissue will bring a few more vinyl copies out into the market but even so I honestly will be content with this CD assuming it will sound good.

I'm not sure if it's from the same concert, but there's more of this excellent lineup on the roaratorio "sideways" lp! -
Just heard from Simon at Vocalion and he tells me this reissue is "sourced from tape"(so presumably the master tape) and will be shipping first week of December. Now I can use the $1000 this reissue saved me to spend foolishly on something else!

Many years ago a big time local record collector once told a friend of mine he'd like to put his entire record collection on a barge, set it on fire, and set it adrift into the ocean. He told him this after a few beers, but it still makes me laugh my ass off when I recall it... Just saying there's other options you know...

Yes Dortmund 1976 is incredible and I would also put "five pieces 1975" at the top of the pile. I must admit I have a soft spot for Braxton's small group work in the 70s...

Jackie McLean's 1960's Blue Note Recordings
Homefromtheforest replied to Tom 1960's topic in Recommendations
Jackie was one of my first jazz loves after discovering Coltrane, Ornette, Dolphy, Mingus, and Monk as a teenager. I love his tone! The records from this era I play most often are "bluesnik", "let freedom ring", "destination out" and "one step beyond". -
Sure!

I agree so I'll join you in the minority! Although I do enjoy his mid to late 60s blue notes still, but my go to records are those 2 early dates with Moncur and Hutcherson. -

Hmm nice choices! I have both of those but have not played them in years...a good reminder to dust them off again. -

I remember Peter from his Butt Rag days, and no I didn't make that up... -
Curran studied under Carter around 1965. I do not believe Carter was involved with MEV at all. And Clifford...I only have "canti illuminati" on CD so I guess I do not have *all* his early solo records on LP...therefore I'm not that big of a record nerd
-
I only have his early LPs and they are fantastic. I also love "maritime rites" and his "natural history" cassette. Saw him perform live around 5 years ago!

I'll trade you a mint "frampton comes alive" *and* a VG++ copy of "thriller" for it - sound fair?

Amancio D'Silva "integration" (lansdowne, UK stereo). Amazing album and every time I listen to it I still feel it's a stronger session then "hum dono" but for some reason doesn't get the same hype.
