  2. Happy Belated birthday, Daniel!!
  3. Count me in as another Wilen enthusiast. I want to mention another 2 great sessions by Wilen: "Movie Themes from France" (Timeless) w/Mal Waldron, and Sanctuary (IDA) w/ Philip Catherine.
  4. Harry Carney was indeed an incredible musician. There wouldn't be that Ellington sound without his Axe! Ironically, his best solo in my opinion is on clarinet (!) playing his own composition "Rockin' in Rhythm" - in Ellington's "The Great Paris Concert".
  5. The name is Rory Stuart. He plays duo with Glenn Wilson in "Bittersweet". He's also playing in Wilson's quartet recording "Blue Porpoise Avenue" Both in the Sunnyside label.
  6. Another Bari Player who deserves a wider recognition is Jack Nimitz. I believe he only has 1 studio recording as a leader: "Confirmation" on Fresh sound. Mr. Nimitz played with Woody Herman band in 53-55, with Kenton's Band 55-56, 58-59 and also with Terry Gibbs' Dream band (late 50s - early 60s) . He also has 1 or two live recordings on the obscure woofy records (sp) and that's it. A very fine mainstream-bop player.
  7. I second that (Hi Tom, long time!)
  8. Another latter day Bari player that I like is Glenn Wilson. He has some very nice CDs out on "Sunnyside" Label. check out his website with some very nice live MP3s
  9. Joe Temperley is indeed a fine Bari player (he plays mean clarinet as well). Je is THE Carney disciple nowadays. Checkout "Nightingale" on Hep and his Naxos Jazz recordings for other fine examples of his work.
  10. John, here's the solo order: 1. Line for lyons - Smulyan-Brignola-Cuber 2. Blueport - Brignola-Cuber-Smulyan 3. I want to live - Cuber 4. Walkin' Shoes - Cuber-Brignola-Smulyan 5. Elevation - Cuber-Brignola-Smulyan 6. Black Nighttown - Smulyan 7. Bernie's Tune - Cuber-Brignola-Smulyan 8. Festive Minor - Brignola 9. Theme for Jobim - Smulyan-Brignola-Cuber 10. Five Brothers - Smulyan-Brignola-Cuber 11. Lonesome Boulevard - Smulyan-Brignola-Cuber 12. Waltz for Geraldus - Cuber-Smulyan-Brignola
  11. Greatest Bari players ever - Pepper Adams & Nick Brignola. I'm a HUGE Brignola fan. He never played a wrong note. Favorite Albuns: Pepper & Brignola - Baritone Maddness (BeeHive), Serge Chaloff Blue Serge (BN); Nick Brignola - On a different level (Reservior) - all the tracks on this Cd are great, but checkout "Backwoods Song" - a duet with Dave Holland - AMAZING! "New" Bari Players I really want to hear more of their work: - Jim Hartog (where is he? ) - Claire Daly (2 lovely albums on Koch. a Mulligan disciple) - Chris Mitchell (a nice one w/ Phil woods on Koch. AMG doesn't even have an entry for him) "Old" guys I wished they recorded more: - Bill Perking on Bari. "Warm Moods" is a beaut. - Leo Parker (besides the 2 BNs, I really like his Chess and Parrot recordings of the early 50s) - Harry Carney outside of Duke's band.
  12. That's strange, As I write, I'm receiving email notifications of PMs that were sent in the past few days (PMs which I already read...)
  13. Couldn't access the board again this morning until now... plus: In the last 1-2 days, I don't get e-mail notification when someone PMs me.
  14. Many happy returns, my friend!
  15. I've known about the existence of this date for some time, but I have never heard it myself. It almost goes without saying that... I would LOVE to hear the "lost quintet" with Chick on ACOUSTIC piano!!! RT, I have these 12 CDs (plus another one that was not included in the "tree"). If you're interested I can burn you some copies. PM me.
  16. this line-up: this being the last show they performed before Shorter left the group. Omit Airto to make it a quintet. The lost quintet was a great-great quintet that Miles took on the road after Bitches Brew sessions. It had Wayne Shorter (ts,ss), Chick Corea (Keyboards), Dave Holland(B), Jack DeJohnette (d). The lost quintet giged in 1969 and early 70. Unfortunately it was never recorded in the studios this "the lost quintet". Fortunately, many bootlegs from the combo are available.
  17. That's as good a guideline as can be formulated, I think. I humbly disagree. Identifying as "loot" only things acquired after 1970, basically favors the "old world countries" - those who were strong enough to loot prior to 1970 . This only launders the illegal acquisitions of such powers as the US, Britain, France, Russia etc. Legitimizing the pillage they've done in the past. Another fine example of discriminating "the south" over "the north". I think the criteria whether or not to return a looted object should be substantial with factors such as the importance of the relics to the looted nation, the ability of such countries to maintain and preserve such a relic should it be returned, etc.
  18. My Favorite is "The Great Fontana". Only second to that are the 2 sessions with another Bone-great Jiggs Whigham. Cameo appearences that I like are on "Bill Perkins on Stage", and on several of the Woody Herman bands. Hey didn't Randy's father, Arno Marsh, played a lot with mr. Fontana in Las Vegas? Why don't we ask him for some first hand memories!!! I bet he has some great memories to share!
  19. Sad news, eventhough it didn't come as a surprise. Mr. Fontana was a great great bone player. Too bad he didn't recorde a lot of Jazz. He a musician's musician. Every bone player admired him. Too bad he wasn't well known to the jazz fans. Long live the music.
  20. Well, I can't think of a recording with the two of them. If so, how could that be? Both boppers, in the same period of time, Miles was with Bird in LA. Maybe they at least jammed together?
  21. Blanton would have been 85 today. I bet he's playing Pitter Panther Patter with Duke up there right now.
  22. RIP Chubby. His contribution to the furst herd was priceless. A small, cheerful locomotive. He will be missed.
  23. Dmitry, don't confuse American Jews (Manischewitz) with Israeli Jews: Shnat Shalom
