since my posting of berigan's avatar was deleted (and the rest of it was thoroughly unpolitical) i assume that means berigan isn't allowed to post outside the political forum anymore, at least with that avatar? Give us a break, okay?

I'm cashing in, suckers!

Have to admit, I did not know who David Binney was (is) but that comment made me go to his homepage and listen to his stuff. Sounds great... his tone reminds me of Jerry Bergonzi at times and Charles Lloyd at others. Poor Lou sounds just jaded and cynical. What a shitty place to be. He hasn't put out a record since what, 1993?

I don't have to worry about bassists.

And who might these nefarious rednecks be? I can think of one person who might fit that description, but that's about it. So one person has taken over the entire board? That one person is confined mainly to the political forum, so if it bothers you that much, don't go in there. And if you have no self-control, then I can make it so you cannot see the political forum at all.

I'd like to point out that Chris has left every jazz forum he's been a part of. So let's not blame this site for his departure. I'd like him to post here too but that's his choice. Thanks for linking the blog.

Movie: Inglourious Basterds

Tarrantino peaked with Pulp Fiction. The rest have been enjoyable, but ultimately forgettable. Kill Bill had some moments but was rather self-indulgent. This is all imo. -
If I wasn't gigging, I would be there. She's at the Green Mill this weekend both Friday and Saturday night. http://www.greenmilljazz.com/phpBB2/cal_di...e4b5a0e32951ca4

Can Jazz Be Saved?
Jim Alfredson replied to mjzee's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
So what part of jazz are "we" trying to save? The artistic part or the part that makes money, because the latter hasn't been true in a long time! The former is quite healthy. We've already discussed briefly current artists who are pushing things forward. I'll never forget my late father remarking on hearing the rough mixes for our album "Groovadelphia": "Wow. It's really great. But aren't you concerned about turning off some of your fans?" And I said, "There are billions more people that don't know about us than do!" Got to take some risks. -
Gambling: PowerBall Mania
Jim Alfredson replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Michigan is one of the few states where you can remain anonymous if you'd like, which is a big plus, imo and avoids all the pitfalls that Paul rightfully points out. Of course, that doesn't take care of the personal pitfalls. Nobody here knows what they would do with that kind of money because none of us has that kind of money. To think it wouldn't change you is naive. For better or worse? Who's to know? Has anyone here watched those shows about former lottery winners who ruin their lives? My wife and I have seen them and we always think "Oh those people are so stupid, that would never happen to us," but really... how do we know? That kind of money... I can't even imagine. I'd like to think that I'd be like Drew and open up a cool jazz club that didn't even have to be even remotely profitable. Travel the world, see the places I've always wanted to see with my wife and family. Take organissimo on the road with no worries about actually making money! Produce CDs, my wife could paint, kids could go to the best private schools, my immediate family would be taken care of... But then again, that would kind of spoil people, wouldn't it? It's much more complicated than we realize at first, I think. -
I look into houses that are for sale in my neighborhood (and other places) all the time. God are we really this paranoid in this country?

Nathan, If you can measure the pushbutton dimensions and perhaps post a picture of them, I could probably find something that would work at Mouser. I just ordered a bunch of buttons for my old Yamaha SY77 synthesizer. I think you're best bet is to call Hammond and talk to Ray. He will most likely send you a new board and then you can just replace the entire thing, like you mentioned. Keep playin'!
-
Welcome to the board! It could be that the little pushbuttons are shot. If you can solder (and unsolder) you might be able to find them at a supply store like Mouser and replace them. The other option is to call Hammond and ask their advice. Ray Gerlich is the head of the service department.

Mixed emotions about this one. Probably better to keep my mouth shut.

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D9...;show_article=1 Wow. I was just talking about him to a friend two days ago and how amazing it was that he was still going. God Bless him.

Ugh. Can the Pistons get a real center for Christ's sake? Ben was great in 2004. He's declined every year since. He will be nothing but a money-hole for the Pistons.

Can Jazz Be Saved?
Jim Alfredson replied to mjzee's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Although it's not necessarily always the case, I take the position that if I'm not connecting with the audience (or at least a percentage of the audience... some people you're never going to reach no matter what) then I'm doing something wrong. I sincerely believe if you play with authority and a sense of joy, the audience (or again, at least a percentage) will connect no matter what kind of music you're playing. Then again, sometimes the only solution is to play Mustang Sally. -

Yep. It's pretty pretentious. -
Thanks, Joel. Green Onions is on vimeo now. I should change my first post to reflect that. http://www.vimeo.com/5971304

Is it just me, or should Stevie Wonder be pissed?

Travis Tritt can flat out sing. The song is different enough; still a throwaway tune. But the guy can sing. -

Can Jazz Be Saved?
Jim Alfredson replied to mjzee's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I like both Wes and Metheny. The issue is that Wes is sadly no longer with us, whereas Pat is still making incredible music. Modern jazz artists are truly competing not only with pop / rock / rap / country music (not to mention video games, TV, movies, etc.) but also with the Dead Giants like Coltrane, Jimmy Smith, Miles Davis, etc. Makes things a lot harder. I realized awhile ago that although fans like to claim that jazz is "free", it really isn't. So many of them want to hear the 1950s. That's it. Anything outside of that and it's "not jazz". No wonder its in trouble. There's no support for contemporary artists doing their thing.
