Man, look who else was in that movie! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0161612/fullcredits

Should this gal have been fired?

I have to agree with Big Wheel on this one. How would a small child find out about some spoof video she did six years ago? I felt the same way about Paul Reubens. I mean, he got caught masturbating in public during a porn movie. Who hasn't??! I mean.... um... -
ascap kicks ass on karaoke scofflaws
Jim Alfredson replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I agree with Paul. g Me too, except when the bar decides to finally comply with ASCAP and purchase a license, after 20 years of featuring live music, and then takes that "fee" out of the musician's pay. Ahem. Like a certain bar we're playing this weekend. -
JK, By music stores, I meant mom & pop operations. Places that sell real pianos usually have organs, too. And they usually take trade-ins, which means they have older Hammonds. Banjo Mart (GC) and Sam Ash deal only with new shit. You might also check charity stores like Goodwills and St. Vincent DePauls (don't know if you have those in NYC, but places that take donations and sell used and really inexpensive clothing, appliances, and furniture to lower-class people). A buddy of mine found a mint Hammond C3 with Leslie at a Goodwill store here in Lansing a few years ago for $125. As for the sound of an M3... yes, it can sound like that Jimmy Smith video (he is either not using a Leslie, or is using one on the "brake" speed and not switching it, so the sound is very stationary) except for the bass. But the lead sound he's doing with his right hand... yes, an M3 can sound like that.

What?!? A record company trying to make money by latching on to the latest fad? What is the world coming to?!

collection of questionable album art

I don't have too much Jazz Messengers stuff, so I ordered what they had (Caravan and Ugestu). Holy crap. Caravan is a killin' album. Not only is Blakey on fire, but Freddie Hubbard is just ridiculous. I listened to this three times straight on my way home from an RD gig the other night. Now I need to get everything with this line-up. I know, I know... a little bit behind the curve here, but I had to buy all those organ records first.

McFadden? Hmmm... you're probably right. It might be Quentin Warren (who was in his working band around the time that movie came out... 1964) I can't really tell. The chicks are definitely fine, but man... that Hammond B3 is gorgeous! It looks BRAND NEW! Hell, it probably was!

Heck of a first post. Thanks for the info!

Wow! I had no idea he was ever in a movie like that. COOL!

Hmm, maybe I should create a separate electric piano forum? Yeah, I love Rhodes and Wurlitzers. My Rhodes action is stiff as hell, but hopefully I can fix that with those options outlined above. My Wurli I just bought back from a friend (needed the bread bad) and I kicked myself every day after I sold it. She's mine again, although he's the one that broke the reed! Yeah, I've seen those tremelo kits... a bit pricey for what they are... basically a few resistors, a cap or two, and a pot. $70? But hell, I know it works, so I should just buckle down and do it. I also need a sustain pedal for it and those are very pricey. I'd like to do more stuff with my electric pianos, but I have enough weight to haul around. I am digging my new rig (the Hammond XK System) and it's MIDI capabilities, pared with a Motif ES rack. There are some really nice, playable electric piano sounds in the Yammy. Besides EPs, I'm currently drooling over a Moog Voyager, but it is completely impractical at this point. But man... those things are FUN! My R&B band opened for Macy Gray at this summer festival a few weeks ago and her keyboardist(s) had my dream rig: Hammond B3 with Leslie, Fender Rhodes Mark I, two Motif MO6s, and a Moog Voyager. Oh yeah...

No, it would sound like a Hammond without a Leslie. You really should try and play an organ first before buying one so you know what you're looking for. I'm sure there is a music store with an M3... call around. If I have time, I'll take some video of me playing my M3. Let me see what the wifey is up to and maybe she can help.

WEIRD Dreams?? Recurring or one of a kind??
Jim Alfredson replied to Templejazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My variation on the dream is usually finding myself about to go on-stage as the lead in some musical and not even knowing what the musical is, much less the role I'm playing or the music/dialogue. It's like I'm Scott Bakula on Quantum Leap or something. "Oh boy!" -

New? He's been a memer since March 19th, 2003. This place "opened it doors" on March 7th! -
I only watch it for the articles, I swear.

j lee, good to see you here again! I was wondering if you were still around. Man, not to get totally OT, but I checked out the alt.music.hammond-organ newsgroup the other day for some info on the XK-3. Has that place become a three-man pissing contest or what? Nice waste of the internet. Anyway, I did paint the Wurli myself. Use Krylon Fusion spray paint. It's specially formulated to bond with plastic. It looks like the plastic has always been that color afterwards. Very cool stuff. A buddy of mine turned me onto it. He painted his Wurli bright yellow (don't know about that, but it does look like it has always been that color!) I like the red. If they made a nasty sea-green or olive-green, I might've tried that. From what I've read, tuning a Wurli is a major pain in the behind. I've got one broken reed on mine that I need to replace, but the tuning is pretty damn good. Mine is also a student model without tremelo, so I need to add that. Still trying to find some schematics for my particular model. I ordered some off ebay, but mine is the 206A and this was for everything BUT that model.

Well, I almost always use "Today's Active Topics", so every thread shows up the same. Regardless, I don't see how it's anymore difficult to access those subforums from the main page than it is to access regular forums. They show up underneath the main category and you just click on them to read them.

Is it loud enough for what? The amp in an M3 is only about 10watts, I believe. So it's probably not loud enough on its own to carry a band, if that's what you're asking. To put it in perspective, a stock Leslie 122 is 40watts. They can get plenty loud for jazz in most cases, but in my blues band I usually have to mic the cabinet and put it through the sound system. If you really want the "B3" sound, you're going to need a Leslie of some kind. Either a Motion Sound unit or a real Leslie. A good combo with the M3 is a 147, a 47, or a 45 (which is shorter than the other two, but still has two rotors, bass and treble). And Leslies are usually not cheap. Unless you get lucky like me and your dad trades a guitarist a few piano tunings for a 147 (that I converted into a 122). That's the Leslie you hear on all my recordings (save the Root Doctor disc, where I used my recently acquired 21H). The Motion Sound stuff is good as well. The Pro-3T can be had for around $400, but you still need something for a bass amp (it has a real rotating horn and simulates the bass rotor electronically, but it does not have a bass speaker... you need to provide the speaker and something to amplify it with). You would also need to have someone wire up a direct output on the M3 so you could plug that into the 1/4" input on the Pro-3T. Taking all that into consideration (buying an M3, having a tech look at it, hooking up a Leslie connection (they do not usually have one stock unless someone already did it) and/or a direct output, buying a Leslie, having a tech look at that, etc.) I still think you should consider saving your bread and getting an XK-1 or XK-3.
-
That is correct. The Larry Young thread is in the General discussion subforum.
-
You'll be half way there with an M3 then. The other half is a real Leslie. But the internal speaker on the M3 sounds pretty good.

Ordered another 33 today. That brings my total up to 64, but I can't edit the poll. DOH!
-
Like I said, my first order was number in the 5600s and my second, just today, was in the 6100s. That's a LOT of orders, folks. I bet they are overwhelmed.

The reason for the X graphic has already been answered by me in Joe's post. I will fix it later. It's just a graphic. As for why you can't read a post you started, are you linking to it from an old link? I can read everything in those new sub-forums fine. Anyone else having problems?

Right. Do guitar tuners support that? I've always been wary of electronic tuners tuning something as complex as a piano (or Rhodes) anyway. The best way is the ear, but a trained ear.
